Although I'm not sure of the lyrics to this song, the country names are
pronounced quite distinctively -- it's called "People in Europe" By
Blur... hope it helps!

There is a song by Tom Chapin, a wonderful children's artist, called
"The Picnic of the World" on his "Mother Earth" album, which lists just
about every country you can think of. It's a lot of fun!

Several of Chuck Berry's songs name cities or states ("Back in the
USA," for example); also a novelty song, recorded by Perry Como, called
"Delaware," puns on many American states. "What did Della wear, boys,
what did Della wear?" etc. Also try the lyrics for Victor Young's
famous film song, "Around the World in Eighty Days" for more
international locations.

Hmmmm... that's a challenge. See how these do:

"Dancin' In The Streets" - Martha Reeves & Vandellas (and others)
"Tower Of London" - ABC
"London Bridge Is Falling Down" - Traditional
"Vienna Calling" - Falco
"All Over The World" - Electric Light Orchestra
"Cairo" - Amazulu
"Back In The U.S.S.R." - Billy Joel
"Belfast Child" - Simple Minds

Be sure to screen any you get, as some might contain inappropriate
material for your students.

Hi Elisabetta. Check out Eric Riback's List of Geography Songs at
http://www.mapville.com/riback/places.htm. Although there are no lyrics at
this site, there is a list of over 800 song titles pertaining to the
following categories:

- Songs about Countries, Continents, Provinces and Regions
- Songs about U.S. States or Regions
- Songs about Cities and Places
- Songs about Streets or Roads
- Songs about Natural Features & Islands
- Other Musical Geographical References

You can probably find the lyrics to most of the songs in Eric's list on the
world wide web or in this newsgroup (check the newsgroup archives at
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/3431/dnsearch.html). If there are
some titles that you can't find, post a separate request in alt.music.lyrics
for each title.

Just an opinion of course, but Huey Lewis and the News are not cheesy.
Certainly not any cheesier than Leonard Cohen.

How about "Dancing in the Streets"? There are several recorded
versions. My favorite is with Mick Jager & David Bowie.

Also, there's "Back in the USSR" by the Beatles, though it may just go
through some Soviet republics.

If you can a copy of the Animaniacs album "Yakko's World", there's a
song that is eery country in the world, set to the tune of "The Mexican
Hat Dance".

Might be helpful for you....

How about "Africa" by Toto. They arent cities or countries...but
Kilimanjaro and Serenghetti in one verse is a heck of an accomplishment!

If you have about 10-12 bucks to blow, go buy the Animaniacs soundtrack!
They have the states and their capitals as done by Whakko and Yakko does
all the nations of the world, but be careful, he speeds up throughout the
song. Trivia: the one nation that is missing- the Ivory Coast. My old
promotions director almost won a leather jacket at a Fox affliate meeting
with that one.
It's great for kids. Mine have played the tape to death. Literally!

There was also a novelty song about 10 years ago called "Arab, Alabama."
Can't remember the artist, but it was a hoot. It begins, "Well, there
ain't no PLO in Arab, Alabama." A couple of other lines include, "...
and Irish people don't shoot each other in good old Dublin, Georgia"
and "there ain't no one named Gorbachev in Moscow, Idaho."

Does anybody know the artist and have the complete lyrics?

Missed the original post on this, but if it's Bryan Adams' "Summer Of

SONG: Summer of '69

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the summer of '69

Me and some guys from school
Had a band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit and Jody got married
I shoulda known we'd never get far

Oh when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Ya - I'd always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you

Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of '69

Man we were killin' time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothin' can last forever - forever, no

And now the times are changin'
Look at everything that's come and gone
Sometimes when I play that old six-string
I think about ya wonder what went wrong

Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh the way you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

Back in the summer of '69
