Standing Outside A Broken Telephone Booth With Money In My Hands is
probably what you were thinking of. And, besides having probably the
longest title of any hit in 1996, it was done by the Primitive Radio
Gods

Also, one might note, that song was originally released
on a small label back in '90 and it didn't sell copy one.
'96 it worked. Must've been something with the Gulf War.

IF YOU HAVEN"T SEEN THE GOODBYE GIRL DON"T READ THIS
BECAUSE I GIVE AWAY THE ENDING!!!!!!

I think what you may be thinking of
about your Telephone booth thinking thing
is an old song by David Gates. It's from the movie
"The Goodbye Girl" and at the end when Marsha
Mason thinks that Richard Dreyfuss left her to go
work on a movie he has a taxi drive him back to the
phonebooth near their apartment in the rain and he
calls her on the phone to tell her to have his guitar restrung
and then she realizes that he's not really leaving her and
even tho he asks her to come with him she doesn't because
now she knows that he wouldn't have asked her to restring his
guitar if he didn't love her. He thought she knew he loved her
but she didn't really know he loved her until he asked her to
restring the guitar in the phone booth in the rain with the taxi
waiting. This is at the end of the movie and then the song starts
"The Goodbye Girl" and then the credits.

Here's the song and I hope it's what you want! :)

(BTW, Richard Dreyfuss DOESN"T sing the song!!)

Goodbye Girl

The Goodbye Girl- David Gates

All your life you've waited
for love to come and stay
and now that I have found you
you must not slip away.

I know its hard believing
the words you've heard before,
but darling you must trust them this once more.

Because baby, goodbye doesn't mean forever.
Let me tell ya goodbye doesn't mean we'll never be together again.
If you wake up and I'm not there I won't be long away
'cause the things you do my goodbye girl
will bring me back to you.

I know you've been taken
afraid to hurt again.
You fight the love you feel for me
instead of giving in.
Well, I can wait forever
for helping to see
that I was meant for you
and you for me.

So remember goodbye doesn't mean forever.
Let me tell ya goodbye doesn't mean we'll never be together again.
Though we maybe so far apart, you still would have my heart.
So forget your past, my goodbye girl 'cause now your home at last.

I think the actual title is "Standing outside a broken phone booth (with
money in my hands)" - but yeah, it IS a great song!
