Ave All.

Anyone knows any song that is about a girl named Marian or Marianne or whatever
sounds alike?

Titles/lyrics would be most welcome, and so are tabs/chords (for guitar).

Please answer by e-mail (tjep...@asci.iaf.nl), or if not possible, in this newsgroup.

Thanx in advance.

There's an old Calypso standard that goes:

all day, all night, Maryann
down by the sea-side siftin' sand
all the little children join in the band
all day, all night with Maryann

Hey MaryAnn, she limbo like no one can
Maryann--she limbo so low
Maryann--let me be your limbo man
Maryann--I love-a you soooo...

and so forth. I believe Harry Belafonte recorded it along with _The Banana Boat
Song_ and _Jamaica Farewell._

First thing that pops into my mind is "C'mon Marianne" by The Four Seasons,
about 1967.

How about the song from "music man" "marian, madam librarian...what
can i do , my dear to make it clear? I need you madlly (?) badly(?)
madame librarian, marian. Heaven help us if the library caught on
fire, and the volundteer bucket brigade men...."

I can't remember the rest, and that could very well not be exactly the
words either.,.but I do know for sure it is from the musical "the
Music man."

Yeah, I got some responses by e-mail, and in one of them someone named this
song. But thanx anyway for the tip.

KA> I will see about getting the words for you,

KA> sorry, but no tabs or chords from me :(
I think I'll be able to find them when I need them.

By the way, is that song a somewhat flattering song? Can it be sung like a
serenade, if you get my drift? :+)))

uh...you must be psychic, because the original request for "Marianne" songs
wasn't posted until Tuesday of THIS week, 4/29. And I don't see your post
anywhere in this thread anyway.

Seriously, that kind of thing happens often on these newsgroups. A request
will sometimes get ten answers, each one acting like they're unaware of the
other nine, because of the time lag in posting. Some servers evidently are
slower than others, or something.

So don't get bent out of shape if it looks like you're being ignored; happens
all the time. Nothing personal.

Kinda off-topic, but the Hollies' song "Carrie Ann" was actually
written about Marianne Faithfull; close enough?

*Technically*, anyse is correct. The song was written for Marianne
Faithfull, although it wound up being called "Carrie Anne" instead.

How about "More Than A Feeling" by Boston?

MORE THAN A FEELING
I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play
(more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play
(more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped awa y. She slipped away.
It's more than a feeling,
when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

In a serenade, 'Carrie Ann' could be replaced very easily by 'Marianne', so
thank you very much!

The first version I remember was by Terry Gilkyson(SP?) and the Easy

girl named Marianne Robinson.

If you want to be comprehensive, you'll want to know about a song Stephen
Stills recorded on his second solo album (Stephen Stills 2) called
"Marianne."

No one will include this on a list of his best work. In fact, it's fairly
lame. Ironically, it's the only song from that album that got any airplay
or appeared (however briefly) on the charts. Go figure.

WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN
(Liam Sternberg)
BANGLES - 1986

All the old paintings on the tombs
They do the sand dance don't you know
If they move too quick (oh whey oh)
They're falling down like a domino

All the bazaar men by the Nile
They got the money on a bet
Gold crocodiles (oh whey oh)
They snap their teeth on your cigarette

Foreign types with the hookah pipes say
Ay oh whey oh, oy oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

The blonde waitresses take their trays
They spin around and they cross the floor
They've got the moves (oh whey oh)
You drop your drink then they bring you more

All the school kids so sick of books
They like the punk and the metal band
When the buzzer rings (ah whey oh)
They're walking like an Egyptian

All the kids in the marketplace say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

Slide your feet up the street bend your back
Shift your arm then you pull it back
Life is hard you know (oh whey oh)
So strike a pose on o Cadillac

If you want to find all the cops
They're hanging out in the donut shop
They sing and dance (oh whey oh)
Spin the clubs cruise down the block

All the Japanese with their yen
The party boys call the Kremlin
And the Chinese know (oh whey ah)
They walk the line like Egyptian

All the cops in the donut shop say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
Walk like an Egyptian
