The Boys Of Summer

(Don Henley and Mike Campbell)

The Boys of Summer

Don Henley / Building the Perfect Beast

Nobody on the road

Nobody on the beach

I feel it in the air

The summer's out of reach

Empty lake, empty streets

The sun goes down alone

I'm drivin' by your house

Though I know you're not at home

But I can see you-

Your brown skin shinin' in the sun

You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby

And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong

After the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights

I wonder if it was a dream

Remember how you made me crazy?

Remember how I made you scream

Now I don't understand what happened to our love

But babe, I'm gonna get you back

I'm gonna show you what I'm made of

I can see you-

Your brown skin shinin' in the sun

I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone

I can tell you my love for you will still be strong

After the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac

A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never
look back."

I thought I knew what love was

What did I know?

Those days are gone forever

I should just let them go but-

I can see you-

Your brown skin shinin' in the sun

You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby

And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong

After the boys of summer have gone

I can see you-

Your brown skin shinin' in the sun

You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby

I can tell you my love for you will still be strong

After the boys of summer have gone

Easy target--this was a rather large hit and gets mucho airplay even
today. Incidentally, anyone know what he was getting at in the line
about the Grateful Dead sticker on the Cadillac? Always wondered what
the point was...

Are you kidding? I think the point was that most older Deadheads were at one
point in their life a bit anti-capitalist in their professed outlook. Of course
a lot were following the Dead as a communal mass was FOR the money it could
provide them, not that it would go towards a cadillac payment. He could have
been saying yesterdays hippies = todays yuppies. He may have also been
commenting on his own life as the road being a big ole never stop party with
the earlier bands he was in. "Don't look back". The song is basically his
bittersweet reminiscing of youth and whether he should be doing so. He too had
a change in priorities, is not the same person.

Later waves of Neo-Deadheads were often not as entrenched in the same culture
in the exact same way as first generation deadheads, they were often college
greeks into tie-dye.

Hi again Grape,... .(and GIO Too!- hope things are well with you..)
This is quite an interesting observation that you have laid-out on the
song-"Boys of Summer".. Really right-on for some granite perceptions
about
the "Morphing of Movements by Generations Gaps"..

However.!!..< you knew that was commin'-- DIDN'T Ya.!,,< g)
As DON-"...Reminisces"..as follows::::

"..Out on the road today.. I saw a Deadhead Sticker on a caddilac..'
"..A little voice inside of my head said.. Don't look back-you can never
look back.."
"..I thought I knew what Love was.. What DID- I know.."
"Those days are gone Forever... I should just let'em go--BUT.!!.."

The *Key* thing here is that -** although the "Lil'Voice"-keeps telling
him
to let go of--* Her/the Politics/ and all that stuff*-
*** HE JUST CAN'T.!!!-- because he IS STILL THE SAME PERSON.!!.. ..
With the SAME VALUES & BELIEFS THAT HE HAD BEFORE.!!. .***

And the "Impetous" of the Entire Song- lies in the message from his
soul-that*.Though the Boys of Summer(flakey people/ love changes like
seasons)
would come and go( Flip-Flop)-* HE REFUSES/CAN'T/ AND NEVER WILL
CHANGE..
