I need the lyrics to a Christmas song called The Huron Carole. Has anyone
heard of it. Perhaps someone could tell me of a recording that this tune
is on as well. Who it is by and what record company recorded it.

The Huron Carol

The Huron Carol, was written by St. Jean de Brebeuf in Quebec, while
the father recuperated from a broken clavicle. He
wrote the words to the music of a sixteenth cenury Carol called "Une
Jeune Pucelle" ( A Young Maid). Fortunatly one of the
last Jesuit Missionaries to the Huron, Fr. de Villeneuve, wrote the
old Huron words to the carol and later translated it into
simple French.
translated to English by J.E. Middleton
1926

1)Twas in the moon of wintertime
When all the birds had fled,
That mighty Gichi Manitou
Sent angel choirs instead;
Before their light the stars grew dim
and wond'ring hunters heard the hymn:
"Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born: In excelsis gloria!"

2) Within a lodge of broken bark
The tenber Babe was found.
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
Enwrapped His beauty 'round;
And as the hunter braves drew nigh
The angel song rang loud and high:
"Jesus your King is born,
Jesus is born: In excelsis gloria!"

3)The earliest moon of wintertime
Is not so round and fair
As was the ring of glory
On the helpless Infant there.
The chiefs from far before him knelt
With gifts of fox, and beaver pelt.
"Jesus, your king is born,
Jesus is born: In excelsis gloria!"

4) O children of the forest free,
O sons of Manitou,
The Holy Child of earth and heaven
Is born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant Boy
Who brings you beauty, peace and joy.
"Jesus, your King is born,
Jesus is born: In excelsis gloria!"

This song is probably the first Christmas Carol composed in the New World. Written by
Catholic missionaries in Canada to tell the Christmas story in terms familiar to the Huron
tribe.

It can be found on "Wee Sing For Christmas" kid's cassette, and an instrumental version is
on John McCutcheon's Christmas album (I think it's called "Winter Solstice").

Ho! Ho! Ho?
Dave.

I have the lyrics for this one. Visit my site at
www.netbistro.com/~alwiensc/lyricspg.htm and fill in a request and I'll send
them to you.

I think I might have who it was written by but I'll have to check my copy.

Hope this helps
