I think the song you're thinking of is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
by Gordon Lightfoot. Some others are "White Squall", "The Wreck of the
Athens Queen", Last Watch" and "The Mary Ellen Carter", all by Stan Rogers.

There's also "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" by The Highwaymen, and "Come on
Down to My Boat" by Every Mother's Son. And a very unknown but great song
from the summer of 1971 called "Sailin'" by Jo Mama.

If you liked Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, then you might want to check out
some of Lightfoot's other songs about ships. He writes about them often; ships,
trains and planes are recurring themes in his songs (along with love, the
outdoors and Canada). Here are some of the other "ships" songs:

Ballad Of Yarmouth Castle (another true shipwreck song, written about a
shipwreck 10 years before the EF)
Marie Christine (a shipwreck song, but not a true story)
Ghosts Of Cape Horn (this was written for a documentary)
Triangle (about the Bermuda Triangle - lots of humor in this one)

I have the lyrics to all the songs at my web site at http://gordonlightfoot.com
, and clips for most of them. Enjoy! (If you want more, I'll dig up my full list
- this is just a sampling).

The ship sinking song was "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon
Lightfoot (it was a true story too).
