that folky song "played" by the stewardess in the movie "Airplane!" goes
something like this:

i traveled to the banks of the river of Jordan, to find where it flows
to the sea.
i looked in the eyes fo the cold and the hungry and I was that I was
looking at me.
and i wanted to know if life had a purpose, and what it all means in the
end.
in the silence i listened to voices inside me. and they told me again
and again.
there is only one river, there is only one sea, and if flows through
you, and it flows through me.
there is only one people, we are one and the same, we are all one
spirit, we are all one name.
we are the father, we are one.

what is the name of the song, and who is the writer?

According to this site, it was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul
and Mary, but i thought it was older than that.

Peter, Paul and Mary
RIVER OF JORDAN
Words and music by Peter Yarrow. Copyright 1972 Mary Beth Music, ASCAP
Lead Vocals - Peter, Paul and Mary, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and
Pete Seeger

I traveled the banks of the River of Jordan
To find where it flows to the sea.
I looked in the eyes of the cold and the hungry
And I saw I was looking at me.
I wanted to know if life had a purpose
And what it all means in the end.
In the silence I listened to voices inside me
And they told me again and again.

The is only one river. There is only one sea.
And it flows through you, and it flows through me.
There is only one people. We are one and the same.
We are all one spirit. We are all one name.
We are the father, mother, daughter and son.
From the dawn of creation, we are one.
We are one.

Every blade of grass on the mountain
Every drop in the sea
Every cry of a newborn baby
Every prayer to be free
Every hope at the end of a rainbow
Every song ever sung
Is a part of the family of woman and man
And that means everyone.

We are only one river. We are only one sea.
And it flows through you, and it flows through me.
We are only one people. We are one and the same.
We are all one spirit. We are all one name.
We are the father, mother, daughter and son
From the dawn of creation, we are one.
We are one.

Yep...Peter Yarrow is the author of "River of
Jordan...He wrote in in 1972 and it first
appeared on his first solo album, PETER, on
Warner Bros. records...It went on to become
part of the Peter, Paul & Mary repertoire and in
1995, the trio included it as the finale on the
LIFELINES album. The trio shared vocals with
Pete Seeger, Fred Hellerman and Ronnie Gilbert
(three of the Weavers) . Lee Hayes passed away
in 1981. Another version appears on the
LIFELINES LIVE ALBUM which is a soundtrack to
the 1996 PBS television special. Great song!

Paul K
BTW, a few other songs from Peter's first solo
album eventually became Peter, Paul & Mary
songs: Weave Me The Sunshine, Don't Ever Take
Away My Freedom and Greenwood.

I always took it for granted that the song was a spoof,
like the rest of the movie.

It's likely a spoof of a real song, though. Just like
the "Airplane!" movies were spoofs of "Airport", that
spiritual may well be a parody of a legitimate song.

Of course, having proposed this theory, I have to admit
I haven't the slightest idea whether it's valid or not!

Not really. Hope I have not posted this twice. The song is "The River",
probably, and I have heard it sung at weddings. The singer or songwriter
was probably John Sebastian, formerly of the Loving Spoonful. I know
I have that album, but cannot find it.

The spiritual came first.

But I found it on another album. "The River of Jordan", sung by Peter Yarrow,
on the album "Peter" of the set "Peter" "Paul and" and "Mary". Traditional.
