Okay, I'm looking for songs about drugs. Pro or con does not matter, nor does
the type of drug referenced. Musical style or era does not matter either. I
am open to anything from medieval folk songs to any form of modern music (jazz,
rock, pop, country, hip hop, etc.) It is not necessary to post the lyrics,
however if you want to provide them I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance
for any information. -J

There are several Beatles songs that are considered drug songs, whether they
were intended as such or just interpreted that way by the general
public...for example...Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD), Yellow
Submarine, With a Little Help from my Friends (kinda iffy), are just a few
examples. Good luck.

One that springs immediately to mind is "Heroin" by the Velvet
Underground. There was also, a couple years ago, a song called "Not
if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" by the Dandy Warhols.

Seems there was also a song just this past year with a refrain of "I
love the cocaine, I love the cocaine" but I can't think of what the
title or artist was..

Take a meander towards The Cure's double LP (or CD if you wish) "Kiss me,
Kiss me, Kiss me" from 1987. There's a good number of songs on that CD that
have to do with drug use. The band members have even confessed to as much.
Particularly "The Snakepit", "Torture", "Hot, Hot, Hot", and "Icing
Sugar". Here's some introspection into this topic for ya', as I've seen the
band perform live four times, though I am not any kind of a recreational or
habitual tripper or abuser myself :

Icing Sugar: (Cocaine)

Rub my nose in icing sugar
Smooth as when this cold
and deadly blade kisses the fruit.

Hot, Hot, Hot: (Acid)

The first time I saw lightning strike
I saw it underground
Six deep feet below the street the
sky came crashing down...

The second time I saw it strike
I saw it at sea
It lit up all the fish like rain
And rained them down on me
For a second the boat
was afloat then everything went black
I left it underwater and I never went back.

The Cure also have a song called "Piggy in the Mirror" that is about
alcoholism, a song "Shake Dog Shake" that is about drug use, and a song
from their early days called "Heroin Face."

Also, don't forget about that song by Bob Dylan from many years
ago....Don't recall the title but it's got the notoriously remembered line
"Everybody must get stoned." and has been parodied over the years on
Saturday Night Live. The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is obscure
and the possibility of it being about psychedelia has been debated for
YEARS, but in my honest opinion, it's quite obvious that the song is about
tripping. The flowers grow tall right before the storyteller's eyes in the
song and the girl character is supposed to be "looked for" yet suddenly
without a moment's notice disappears in these same tall flowers that
McCartney and Lennon have conjured to mind. The train at the station is
obviously a metaphor for the drugs making their way into the bloodstream
and the "porters" are the trippers themselves. The song reeks of Lewis
Carroll and is more than likely an homage to his "Through the Looking
Glass" (i.e. "the girl with kaleidoscope eyes" being Alice herself.)
There's a good many references to food in that song, too, which further
drives forth my theory that it's definitely got an Alice in Wonderland "Tea
Party" feel to it.

Just my opinion about The Beatles one, of course. I've no certainty that my
hypothesis is right, but it's just a gut feeling.

Here's another one that I'd forgotten about from years ago: Sweet Leaf.
It's by Black Sabbath, I think. I'm pretty sure it came out before Ozzy
Osbourne went solo. I remember the song from when I was a little kid. Also
Novacane by Beck, Magic Man by Heart, My Drag by The Squirrel Nut Zippers,
and Sleep Comes Down by Psychedelic Furs are four others. To see Richard
Butler perfrom Sleep Comes Down in concert is really something else. Quite
mesmerizing indeed. Too bad the Furs have disbanded. He and his brother are
still around but The Butler's new music is not nearly as good as the old
stuff and nothing could ever touch the old Furs favorite "Love My Way."

Oh man, there's pretty not much more you can add to that. Is it just me or
are half those songs from the sixties and the seventies? :')
There's really not much I could add to that. Since the original poster more
or less meant ANY drugs I'll take it literally then.
Foolish games - Jewel (a reference to sipping coffee and smoking a
cigarette - okay it's as border line as you can get)
Run, Baby, Run - Sheryl Crow
Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morrisette (Okay it's not really)
Cheap Wine and a three day growth - Chisel
Khe Sahn - Chisel
I want you - Savage Garden (I'm not too sure about this one)
Tubthumping - Chumbawumba
Lady Marmalade - Labelle (alcohol reference)
Piano man - Billy Joel
American Pie - Don McLean
House of the Rising Sun - The animals
Smell like Teen spirit - Nirvana
We didn't start the fire - Billy Joel

Errr, I hope some of them are okay. :')

Cheers,

Ka.

Yes it did off their 1971(or is it 72) album "MASTERS OF REALITY" Ozzy left
Sabbath in 1978 after "NEVER SAY DIE" was released & pursued a solo carrer.

You know, I was going to say 'Jane Says' by Jane's Addiction, too, but I
couldn't recall if it had references to drugs. It's been a looooooong
while, and I saw them perform it in concert, but that concert is vaguely in
my mind. Jane speaks of the pimp "I'm done with Sergio, he treats me like a
rag doll." and she goes back out into the streets regardless: "Have you
seen my wig around? I can't make it without it." but I have this one on
cassette and not on CD so I'd really have to search high and low for the
drug references. What are they off the top of your head? I'd assume that
since it's prostitution, the references are probably to freebasing and to
heroin, but I'd rather not assume. I have a strong inkling that "Gold Dust
Woman" by Fleetwood Mac is about drugs, too, but so many of FM's other
songs derive from such a pure and unscathed place that it almost hurts me
to make this character assessment.

Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone.

"You ever heard the story of Mister Faded Glory say he who ride the pony
must some day fall. Been talking to my alter it says life is what you make
it and if you make it death well then rest your soul away, away, away. It's
a broken kind of feeling should have to tie me to the ceiling a bad moon's
a coming better say your prayers."

<<And then later in the song....>>

"I used to treat you like a lady, now you're a substitute teacher this
bottle's not a pretty, not a pretty sight to see."

Sad to note here that Andrew Wood, the band's lead singer did actually die
(I think he was about 28 or 30 years old, but may have been younger.) and
had a LOT of problems with drugs, too.

The best song that Ozzy ever recorded with OR without Sabbath had to have
been "The Wizard". That's an absolutely excellent song, especially
considering what stage he was at in his career.

Well... I guess it's not concrete evidence that she was
taking drugs, but the phrase "i'm gonna kick tomorrow" seems
to reek of drugs more than prostitution. But you might have
a point. Perhaps it is just a song about being generally
down and out. But still, the "takes a swing and she can't
hit!" part just seems like she might be on something.

That's just my lil ol' opinion though.

I've noticed that some people are including stuff from Hair, so I guess I'll
throw in something from another musical...a lot of stuff from Rent involves
drugs, since that's a major part of the plot. The one that comes to mind
first is "Would you Light My Candle" Part of it goes like this:

"I used to shiver like that
I have no heat, I told you
I used to sweat
I got a cold
Uh huh, I used to be a junkie
Every now and then I like to...feel good"

The female singer also refers dropping her pure stash, and basically the
whole song is about her being on drugs. I have an mp3 if you want it.

Here's a couple that I know of, I'll even give you the lyrics. One was
mentioned somewhere in this thread already.

AC/DC---Gone Shootin' (about heroin I believe)
AC/DC---Shoot To Thrill (there's been some arguments on the AC/DC NG as
to whether it refers to drugs or not. Read the lyrics and decide for
yourself.)
AC/DC---Inject the Venom (Again read the lyrics and decide for yourself)
AC/DC---Have a Drink On Me (If you consider alcohol to be a drug.)

Gone Shootin
AC/DC---Powerage---1978

Feel the pressure rise
Hear the whistle blow
found a ticket of her own accord
To I don't know
Packed her heart in a travelin' bag
And never said good bye
Somethin' missin' in the neighborhood
All the cryin' eyes
I stir my coffee with the same spoon
Knew her favorite tune

Gone shootin'
My baby's gone shootin'

Wrap yourself around
Like a second skin
Backed her favorite nag
But she could never win
I took an offer in another town
She took another pill
She was runnin in overdrive
A victim of overkill
she never made it past the bedroom door
What's she aimin' for

gone shootin'
She's gone, gone, gone, gone
Gone shootin'
My baby's gone shootin'

Gone shootin'
How am I gonna get her down
Oh look out, look out, look out, look out
Shootin heroin
Gone shootin'
She sure is loaded
She's gone, gone, gone
She's gone
Gone Shootin'

Shoot To Thrill
AC/DC---Back In Black---1980

All you women, who want a man of the street
But don't know which way you wanna turn
Just keep a comin' and put your hand out to me
Cause I'm the one who's gonna make you burn

I'm gonna take you down
down, down, down
So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

shoot to thrill
Play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill
Play to kill
I got my gun at the ready gonna fire at will
Yeah

I'm like evil, I get under your skin
Just like a bomb that's ready to blow
Cause I'm illegal, I got everything
That all you women might need to know

I'm gonna take you down
Down, down, down
So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

shoot to thrill
Play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill
Play to kill
I got my gun at the ready gonna fire at will

Cause I shoot to thrill
and I'm ready to kill
I can't get enough and I can't get my fill
shoot to thrill, play to kill, yeah
Pull the trigger, pull it
Pull it, pull it, pull the trigger

shoot to thrill
Play to kill
too many women with too many pills
shoot to thrill
Play to kill
I got my gun at the ready gonna fire at will

Cause I shoot to thrill
and I'm ready to kill
I can't get enough and I can't get the thrill
Cause I shoot to thrill
Play it again

Yeah, shoot you down yeah
I'm gonna get ya down to the bottom, shoot ya
I'm gonna shoot ya, yeah, yean, yean
I'm gonna shoot you down, yeah
I'm gonna getcha down, down, down, down, down
Shoot you, shoot you, shoot you, shoot you down, shoot you, shoot you
Shoot you down, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
I'm gonna shoot to thrill
Play to kill
Shoot to thrill

Inject The Venom
AC/DC---For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)---1981

No mercy if the mbad if they want it
No mercy for the bad if they plead
No mercy for the bad if they need it
No mercy from me

Tell no trugh and tell no lies
Cross your heart and hope to die
Never give what you can't take back
Scratch like a cat
Oh inject your venom
It'll be your last attack

No mercy for the bad if they want it
No mercy for the bad if they plead
No mercy for the bad if they need it
V-E-N-O-M

Got no heart no, feel no pain
Take your heart and leave a stain
Come choose your victim
Take him by surprise
Go in hard and get him
Right between the eyes

Inject the venom
Inject the venom
Come on inject the venom
Come on inject it all
Shick it in
Shick it
Come on inject the venom
Inject the venom
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Yeah
Inject the venom
Get it on
Inject the venom
Inject the venom
Ooh inject it all
Inject the venom

Have A Drink On Me
AC/DC---Back In Black---1980

Whiskey gin and brandy
With a glass I'm pretty handy
Tryin' to walk a straight line
On sour mash and cheap wine
So join me for a drink boys
We're gonna mke a big noise

so don't worry 'bout tomorrow
Take it today
forget about the check
We'll get hell to pay

Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah, have a drink on me
Have a drink on me

dizzy drunk and fightin'
On tequila white lightnin'
my glass is gettin' shorter
On whiskey, ice, and water
So come and have a good time
And get blinded out of your mind

so don't worry 'bout tomorrow
Take it today
Forget about the check
We'll get hell to pay

Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah
Get Stoned

Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Come on

gonna roll around
gonna hit the ground
Take another swing
Have another drink
Gonna drink it dry
Gonna get me high
Come on all the boyw
Make a noise

Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me

Yeah, I never would have thought of that on my own, but it does lead to a
related song. I can't think of the title right now, but Temple Of The Dog had
a song about Andrew Wood. Another related title would be "Would" by Alice In
Chains which was also about Andrew Wood. Thanks for dislodging the memory.

Well, thanks for the help and here's your lyric request:

Cure For Pain

Where is the ritual
And tell me where where is the taste
Where is the sacrifice
And tell me where where is the faith
Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain
Where is the cave
Where the wise woman went
And tell me where
Where's all that money that I spent
I propose a toast to my self control
You see it crawling helpless on the floor
Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain (x2)
When they find a cure find a cure for pain

I don't think it's border line. Actually, it's completely valid. I did
request songs about drugs. I never specified what drugs. Most people have
just made the assumption that I wanted songs concerning illegal or recreational
drugs. However, other drugs (i.e., over the counter drugs, prescription drugs,
legal drugs) would be just as valuable to me. Well, any how, thanks for the
input. -J

Who sings that song "Have a drink on me"? All of sudden it's coming back to
mind after reading the below post. I remember it from when I was a kid. I
think it's either AC/DC, Judas Priest, or Sammy Haggar.

The whole album was a tribute to Andy, actually It says so in the liner
notes. Andy knew Stone and Jeff from having worked with Green River. I'm
not sure if Andy met Chris Cornell ahead of time or later after meeting the
other guys. "Say Hello to Heaven" is probably the song that you are
thinking of. I forgot about Alice in Chains. Basically, all of their stuff
is drug related IMO. Lane's an absolute stoner. I live in Seattle and am
not too fond of Lane Staley. A close female friend of mine grew up (in the
outskirts of Seattle in a smaller community) with Lane and his sister and a
college buddy of mine was a good friend to Lane in the 1980's and Lane
dissed on Mark in a very bad way. It didn't need to wind up that way, but
Lane is not all man so it's to be expected. He's a jerk. It's strange. We
still listen to his music, but it's always with a twinge of contempt for
the little bastard. :-)

I actually thought of a couple more!

"Say No Go" - De La Soul
I heard shoving is worse than pushing
But I'd rather know a shover than a pusher
'Cause a pusher's a jerk

"Night of the Living Baseheads" - Public Enemy

This is the dope jam
But lets define the term called dope
And you think it mean funky now, no
Here is a true tale of the ones that deal
Are the ones that fail

"Don't Talk" - 10,000 Maniacs
Talk talk talk about it, if you talk as if you care
But when your talk is over, tilt that bottle in the air
Tossing back more than your share.

he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink

"The Have Nots" - X
How does it feel to have your own bottle of booze
Behind the bar, how does it feel

"Stereotype" - The Specials
He's just a stereotype
He drinks his age in pints
He drives home pissed at night

I am sure the amount of alcohol songs could fill a whole
volume...

There was a Stones song called "19th Nervous Breakdown," but this is not it.
What you've quoted here is "Mother's Little Helper" which is kinda funny that
you mention this one because I thought of it while I was at work this evening.

Here's a couple more by AC/DC that falls under the Alcohol category

Whiskey On The Rocks
AC/DC--Ballbreaker--1995

I've been drinkin' all night long
So long baby, I'm gone

Well bloody mary give me shivers from a shot
Set up the shooters it's time for a drop
Old Jamaica runnin' we come
Down at the hatch jack
The women and the fun

We drink a lot
That demon drop
This one's on me
And here's to you

Whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot
Whiskey on the rocks
Elixer from the top

Drinkin Mai Tai singapore sling
Beam me up Jim it's time to come in
I'll have one more afore ye close up the door
It's on the house mac, It's whiskey galore

We drink a lot
That demon drop
This one's on me
Here's mud in your eye

Whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot
Whiskey on the rocks
Elixer from the top
Yeah yeah yeah
Come on
Seven sheets to the wind ha, ha, ha, ha
Fill 'em up joe

I'm drinkin'
Whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot
whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot
Whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot
Whiskey on the rocks
A double or a shot

I'm drinkin'
Whiskey on the rocks
I like my whiskey on the rocks
gimme whiskey on the rocks

Pour me a double
Here comes trouble
Whiskey on the rocks
whiskey on the rocks

Danger
AC/DC--Fly On The Wall--1985

Don't talk to strangers
Keep away from the danger, yeah, yeah
Don't talk to strangers who smile
Keep away from the danger all the time
You just keep away

Red lights are flashin'
There's been a misunderstandin', yeah, yeah
I'm bruised broke and bandaged
Through drinkin' all that brandy

I was under the table
But I came back for more
Gotta hit the bottle
But my head hit the floor

Danger, danger
Don't talk to strangers
Stranger, danger
Don't you talk
Danger, danger
Don't talk to strangers
Danger, danger
don't talk keep away

Red lights still flashin'
People are still dancin' in my head
I've done with thinkin' about what to do
Another night of drinkin'
Just one before I'm through

I was just raisin' hell
I wasn't doin' no harm
The cops could not appreciate
My natural charm

Danger, danger
don't talk to strangers
Stranger, danger
Don't you talk
Don't talk
Danger, danger
don't takd to strangers
Danger, danger

Don't talk to strangers

Here's some more that I thought of as I was typing these. I'll just put
in the lines where drugs or alcohol are mentioned.

Sink The Pink
AC/DC--Fly On The Wall--1985

Sink the pink
It's all the fashion
Drink the drink
It's old fashioned
Gimme water, gimme wine
Gonna show you a good time
Sink the pink, sink the pink

The song Carry Me Home is all about drinking. I don't know all the
lyrics but I'll post a few of the lines that I know

But I've just spent next weeks wages and I'm right out of coin
But you want more and it's half past four and they want to close the
joint
But we can't afford a taxi, and it's too late for the bus
But I've been told by friends of mine you're someone I can trust

Won't you carry me home
(Don't let me lie here in all this beer)

You drank all your booze and half of mine
I'm bleary eyed and you're waiting for the sunshine (to come and kill
me)
Just like the man who threw me on the floor
Don't matter, while I'm down here I might as well try and find the
fucking door
Excuse me, have you seen ???
And have you got a plastic bag 'cause I'm gonna be sick
I'm dead drunk and heave'n hanging upside down
And you're getting up and leaving, you think I'm gonna drown

Won't you carry me home

I'm sure I'll think of more.

The best song that Ozzy ever recorded with OR without Sabbath had to have
been "The Wizard". That's an absolutely excellent song, especially
considering what stage he was at in his career.

It's Woman, actually. I said that one this week already, but hey, no
biggie. It's also quite possible that "Never Going Back Again" (Buckingham
on lead vocals) by Fleetwood Mac could be about drugs. It's hard to say. It
might also be about a girl. Watching Buck perform it in concert leads me to
believe that it's about drugs. His performance both times was somewhat
cathartic. He also says "Been down one time, been down two times, I'm never
going back again." That sounds druggy to me; like the person in the subject
of the song just can't seem to get the monkey off his back.

Just for the record, the song is called "A Passage to Bangcock," and the
whole thing is about drugs (well, pot, hash and opium at least).

How about the Alice In Chains cd "Dirt?" The entire album is about drug use.
