January brings us birthdays of two of the most influential men in the
history of Mexican music:
Juan Gabriel
Born Alberto Aguilera Valadez, Jan. 7, 1950, Paracuaro, Michoacan, MX
Jose Alfredo Jimenez
Born Jose Alfredo Jimenez Sandoval, Jan. 19, 1926, Dolores Hidalgo,
Guanajuato, MX;
died, Nov. 23, 1973, Mexico City, MX
Prepare your favorite steak, pull out your big fat cigar or set out
your special tequila, shot glasses and limes on the dining table, in
the living room with the stereo playing or your backyard patio to watch
a glorious sunset.
In the constant hustle and bustle of everyday life in today’s hi-tech
world, we often miss out on simple pleasures. So circle those dates on
the calendar, plan an intimate celebration with close friends. If you
prefer solitude, pull up your easy chair and prepare to meditate on the
heartbreaking stories and uplifting songs like “Yo,” “Alma de
Acero,” “Querida,” “Hasta que Te Conoci,” and others.
Let us take time to reflect on the inspiring contributions of these
men, on the wonderful powerful music they have left us. Let us pause to
recognize and appreciate the brilliant lights these men sparked in the
world, that have given us joy, sadness and meaning, enriching our lives
along the way.
And let us be thankful as we celebrate and salute these poetic
singer/songwriters who have been part of a wonderful century of Mexican
artistry.
