German,

You are certainly entitled to your opinions. There is no argument on that.

But if you were to disqualify Luis Miguel from being a "legit" Mexican by
virtue of his Castilian and Italian parents and his being born in U.S.
territory, then you seem to be looking at the world in black and white.

I know Luis Miguel only as a music aficionado. I do not know his private
persona but I am definitely very grateful for what he has accomplished as a
public figure. His claim on being Mexican is neither lip-service nor for
want of a market base. If he were that shallow, he would have crossed-over
to the English market years ago during his early successes.

He wasn't born in Mexico but he has embraced this great nation and its people
as his own. Just ask any paisano from Acapulco to the DF, from the small
barrios to the big cities. Chances are, ordinary Mexicans will also claim
Luis Miguel as their own.

True, he hasn't written most of his songs, but he has never failed to honor
and give due credit to the authors like Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Juan Carlos
Calderon, and Armando Manzanero.

Thanks to Luis Miguel -- the Mexican classic "La Media Vuelta" is so popular
even Latino-style bars in far-away places like Manila play it frequently due
to insistent public demand. His rendition of this great Mariachi classic
certainly does not take away any glory from its original author. In fact,
young people of today are beginning to appreciate the music of their parents'
generation because they have been revived by someone whom they could relate
to.

With or without Luis Miguel, Mexican music can undoubtedly hold its own
against any music from elsewhere. These are the words and melodies of a
people who have known pain and suffering but have nevertheless remained
steadfast in their pursuit of friendship and romance, loyalty and patriotism,
and the simple enjoyment of life.

Luis Miguel is just one of many singers who celebrate this music. Some of
them wear charros and sombreros, some of them use music videos -- but
regardless of the packaging with which it is delivered, it is still Mexican
music.

And lastly, as to your statement :

>"Luis Miguel is a product of the 90's video age where flash and production are more >important than substance. No, Luis Miguel is NOT Mexican of either blood, heart, or >soul"

-- just tell that to each of the 160,000 Mexicans who watched El Concierto
at the Auditorio Nacional in the summer of 1994, and the millions of other
Latinos and non-Latinos who have watched him in his world tours.

José

Luis Miguel is totally MEXICAN! He may not've been born there, but you're from wherever your heart is, and his heart is in Mexico. Why would he have a song called México En La Piel?!
You know, just sayin'...
