Hello. I am a new Luis Miguel fan. I first heard him one year ago on Mor
Music TV. They were running his video "El Caricia Mi Sueno".(?) Anyway,
his voice absolutely arrested me. Being a vocalist and a musician, I was
tremendously impressed with the quality of his voice and his diction. At
that time I did not know enough about him and did not want to buy an
entire CD of his because, as many of you probably know, you usually buy a
CD to hear one or two great songs; and the others turn out to be "duds."

Well, about two months ago, I was in Wal-Mart and saw his CD entitled
"Romance" so just on a whim I decided to buy it. Boy! Was that ever the
best decision I ever made with regard to a CD! There wasn't one "dud" on
the entire album. Then almost immediately I saw his "El Concierto"
advertised on pay-per-view television. I couldn't help but be impressed.
Oh, sure, he knows it's all about him. But he is definitely an excellent
vocalist, one of the best I've ever heard. And whether or not he has a
huge ego -- what man doesn't -- does not keep me from appreciating his
gorgeous voice.

I went out and bought five other CDs at Barnes and Noble. I printed out a
list on the computer of all the albums that he has recorded to date. On
one of the albums I bought -- 14 Grandes Exitos -- he is singing at a very
young age and he has that choir-boy voice. It sounds as though he must
have had professional voice training at a very early age. Does anyone
know about this? And also, does anyone know for how long he has been
singing? Twenty years or so?

The biography that some of you have discussed: Is that written in
Spanish?

One more thing: If there is anyone who knows about an upcoming concert of
Senor Miguel's in Miami, please do inform me. Thank you, all, for your
participation in this newsgroup. I learned a great deal.

Luis Miguel's father, Lusito Rey, was a professional singer and composer
until he gave it up to be LM's full time manager. From what I understand
they used to watch tapes of musical artists over and over. It was the way
they trained.

I've never heard or read anything about Luis Miguel being a "trained"
singer- in other words- studying with vocal coaches, etc. I think he just
had a natural talent that was developed with the help ofhis father and
other gifted musicians he worked with from the beginning of his career.
Before his voice changed he amazed everyone with his ability to reach
incredibly high notes. They used this capabillity to everyone's advantage
on his earlist recordings.

He was an instant hit with his first record which he cut when he was about
12 years old. He was so young that his appeal was only to the bubble gum
crowd. His first real grown up album was "Soy Como Quiero Ser" which came
out when he was seventeen. That was done in collaboration with Juan
Carlos Calderon who wrote most of the songs and did the arrangements. The
title song was written by his father. "Romance" the CD that you bought
popularized him to the adult listener. In fact he is responsible for
introducing the bolero to a whole new generation. Before that most of his
young fans weren't interested in boleros but as they grew up- so did he.
The boleros (and recently the mariachi songs) also popularized him to an
adult audience that had pretty much ignored him before that.

You're so right. Luis Miguel has an amazing voice. Believe it or not I've
had people at stop signs on the street holler to me and ask me who's
singing when I'm driving with the windows down and have him blasting from
my car stereo.

Si! Micky (as his friends call him) and of which I'm not one but would
like to be)
does have an amazing effect on people who hear him for the first time.

I know that he's been a star since he was 12 years old and he's 26 now.
Also- he's going to go on tour in the U.S. in the fall and he always plays
Miami for several concerts. Take a tip from me and DON'T MISS IT.

by the way, along with his gorgeous voice and his unbelievable stage
presence and charisma did you happen to notice that he's not too hard on
the eyes?

I have to agree with you. My dad played alot of bolero records when I was a
kid and I always hated it. After listening to LM sing boleros, I realized
why my dad listen to boleros. They are such great songs, specialy when LM
sings them.

I also remember when LM first song came out (1+1=2 Enamorados), I think I
was about 13 yrs old. I loved the song, but my family did not want to buy
his record. It was not until I moved from Brownsville to San Antonio that
I missed spanish music and I started buying all kinds of spanish music. I
did not hear of LM until the song La Incondicional. It was a big change
from the first time I heard his first song. Later I decided to buy Busca
una Mujer and from then on I was Hooked and realed in. I have only seen LM
in two concerts, San Antonio 93 before his romance II and Houston 95. I
hope he comes to Houston this year. I am only waiting for two things this
year, his concert and his new album.

PS Does anyone know if LM released an album called Directo Al Corazon or is
it just a compilation of hits. I got a tape I bought in Mexico, but could
not find the CD. I will post the scan of it hopefully today.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Welcome the world of LM.

I first purchased Aries from Columbia House about the time when it
came out as it was my first CD purchase in the Latino category. I
had no clue who the best Latino performers were. I really got lucky.
I loved the music and he does have a great voice. There is a lot of
Latino music that fills in the gaps I am missing right now from
regular American (U.S.) music. A lot of gaps.

I've been able to hear Dame several times this week (finally). It
doesn't sound that much like Suave to me. A lot of R&B with a little
funk in it. Does anyone know the name of the Michael Jackson song
that came out approximately 3, maybe 4 years ago in which the video
for the song had an Egyptian theme. "Dame" has a very similar style
to that song - now I am curious about the name of the MJ song.

It was "Blame it on the Boogie" as I recall.

Hope this helps.

Actually, the Michael Jackson video with the Egyptian theme was for the
song "Remember the Time." "Blame it on the Boogie" was the song that
"Sera Que No Me Amas" by Luis was a remake of.

Hope that helps!
