I just read the Globe and Mail article.

It said that he's now separated/divorced from his 4th wife! How could she
leave him at a time like this?????????

Also, I thought Gord only married once in the '60s, to a Swedish woman I
believe.

Who are the other two wives? And 6 children? I thought he only had 3.

I believe Gordon is presently on his third marriage. In a 1990 TV interview
with Marilyn ______ (can't remember her last name- I have the VCR tape
somewhere), GL talks about giving up the bottle in 1982 when his second
marriage broke up. That also accounts for the optimism found on the 1983 album
"Salute."

He has been married only twice. His first wife, Brita, in April 1963;
they had 2 children, Fred and Ingrid. They divorced in 1973. He has a
son in California, Galen Magee, but I don't know who the mother is.
Then he had a long relationship with Cathy Coonley, Eric, in the very
late 70s, early 80s but broke up over his drinking (which he quit in
1982.) He married Elizabeth Moon in 1989 and they have Miles and
Meredith.

Uhhhh . . . in fairness to Elizabeth, Sam, marriage is a two-way
street.
You and I will never know all the nuances and details of why they split,
but
I do think it is unfair to at least one party in that former marriage to
make a statement like "How could she leave him at a time like this",
given that we DON'T know the details.

Fair enough, but it's also VERY unlikely that a man who's been in the ICU
for 6 out of the last 12 months is in ANY position to ask for a even a
separation, much less a divorce. Given the meds that Gord has been on, I'm
sure both his docs and his lawyers would strongly advise him of such a move
in a disabled state.

Correction accepted, for my part, if true - I thought the "Cathy"
Gord had the long term relationship with, and wrote "Sundown" about was
the same girl that offed John Belushi. Maybe he had a long-term
relationship with Cathy Coonley, but also was in a realtionship with
Cathy Smith at one time . . ?

For a group that is supposedly dedicated to a man and his music, I find this
thread totally offensive. What purpose does it serve to dissect the
personal life and heartbreaks of a man who has given so much to so many?
Certainly any marital breakup is a two way street, but to make it a gossip
item by injecting speculation or even fact belies anyone who really cares
about his happiness or health..

Clarfying errors/questions in Sam Smith's post was not dissecting
Lightfoot's personal life. I offered no opinions. Better to set the record
straight as it has been noted by Lightfoot himself than have people running
around with falsehoods about the number of marriages/children. I in no way
responded to any speculation as to why the separation ocurred. Having just
been recently separated myself after 28 years I am more than sensitive to
this subject. Whether Mr. Smith is a troll or not is not my place to decide
or speculate. I answered his questions as to what I know are facts and I
know how much I care about Gordon Lightfoot's health and happiness even if I
was not personally involved with him in any capacity for the last 33 years I
have been a fan.

Regarding the separation/divorce of Gord, I know that at times of extreme
crisis, marriages can and do break up because either one or both partners just
can't manage the stress, be it physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual.

It is sad to hear that is happening when GL is so ill. But, we know precious
few of the facts, so we can't make any judgements or come to any sort of
conclusion. I can understand how stressful Gord's illness can be to a marriage.

And to infer conclusions is to assume. And everyone knows what whta the
letters comprising the word assume denote, making as ass of u and me.

And while I'm perfectly willing (and apparently able!) to handle this
condition, to speculate about someone we all hold in heigh esteem seems
to me to be, well, low. And beneath us all. I must confess, if it
turned out that Gord had been married 50 times or fathered 20 kids it
still wouldn't change my appreciation of his music. In fact, I really
don't care about his personal life, at least when I'm in my musical
mode, listening to songs, thinking about the genius behind them, tryingn
to find some verbal or musical thread that I can hang my own hat on.
It's got nothing to do with the art.

So, if you guys want to speculate, wonder, obsess over, fixate on this
stuff, knock your socks off. I'm not interested. The music is there,
it's sitting there, for anyone to hear, for anyone to comment on. If
the artist has been abducted by aliens or married a circus performer, or
even been discovered to have an affinity for sheep is totally
immaterial. Get over it. It's his life. If you must obsess on it, at
least separate it from the art. Because the songs stand alone.

If he has been married 70 times, divorced 71 times, had 87 intimate

Wow...can't believe this...and I make an appearance here after a very
long time...but to really take to heart anything that is mentioned in
any tabloid tripe is nothing more than believing that Granny Jones
had a hearty breakfast with an Alien from the far side of the Veil
Nebula! When I heard Gord may not be able to sing again..I sat and
cried and was really shook up...I don't do that very often...only for
those I truly care very much about.Of course my wife, she thought I
was losing it,she wouldn't understand,she's from Malaysia..but,she
loves Gord's music..her fav---"In My Fashion" but being Bi-Polar,and
having Anxiety Disorder,etc..I am pretty sensitive to things that are
very important to me.I won't even attempt to speculate, guess,or
anything of the kind..Just not my business...just as it was not my
business what went on with Clinton;) But I do believe there were
alot from what I read...that was talking on this subject..just human
nature..not as disrespect...but their own way of trying to sort out
the info that was placed in front of them...or to defend Gord, which
is very noble of them.I don't see any apology is needed from anyone
at all, well except for Ed...he should have clarified he was refering
to Madonna...LOL

I think the most important thing,is Gord getting well..and getting
back to his work..because I truly believe deep in my heart that
he will be able to sing again...I will pray for that. And Gord...if
you are reading,we all love you and hope you recover soon, you
are a fighter, and and inspiration to us all..God Bless You my
friend.

Douglas--what are you SAYING here? Are you saying that Granny Jones DIDN'T
have a hearty breakfast with an alien from the far side of the Veil Nebula?
But...but...but...it was in the Enquirer! It HAS to be true, right? I
think you owe ME an apology now! Not immediately, however: I'm just
leaving to go have breakfast with Elvis...
;)

The sad thing about delusions is that the deluded seldom have an inkling
about what's going on. Elvis was at my house this morning for a
breakfast of Qualudes and pancakes. Even given time zone differences,
Derek, oh my, how sad. How sad. The King was in Apharetta for
breakfast. Let it go. As he tasted the Canadian Maple Syrup and melted
butter he said: "Oh, Lord! The King is in the house!" Geez.

For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain.

Elvis was up here this morning in Whitby at the Tim Horton's doughnut shop
on Hwy#2.
The line up was huge at the drive through..He was working the decaf
machine....

Now, see, Char, this is exactly what gives rumors a bad name. Elvis
would never work the Decaf machine. I mean, c'mon! "De-" anything
isn't useful to him. How's a ghost to keep up his shroud?

It IS as bad as you think, and they ARE out to get you.
