SONG FOR A WINTER'S NIGHT / HOME FROM THE FOREST
(To Al and Barb McCormick)
Mostly, when I am on stage, I don't get to see too much of the audience.
This is because the spotlights they use in the theatres where we play
are so bright that it's virtually impossible to see beyond them. One
night, however, four years ago, I was doing my Christmas Concert at Roy
Thompson Hall, in Toronto, and I could see the first few rows as clear
as day. In the middle of the first number I looked out and there,
sitting deadcentre, right in the bull's-eye, was Gordon LIghtfoot. That
was a pretty special moment for me. It was even nicer that he came back
stage after the show and said hello. It was the first time we had met.
The first time I saw Gordon perform was in 1974. That was at the
Kitchener Arena. Al McCormick, a buddy of mine who was going to
Waterloo, called me and told me he had tickets to the show. I had
listened to Lightfoot's stuff all through high school, so it was very
exciting to see the man himself. I have always loved watching
songwriters sing songs they have written themselves. And I have always
been a huge Lightfoot fan. I think he is a phenomenal storyteller. I
have wanted to record some of his tunes for years. These are two of my
favourites. <END>
Had I any idea John McDermott was in the audience he would never have made it
out again. I LOVE his voice, love his curly hair and his smiling eyes..I admit
that I've fallen prey to the sappy advertising...he was here in CNY back in the
spring, to help the membership campaign for the local PBS station. I know this
is alt.music.lightfoot, but has anyone heard this man sing 'Skye Boat Song'....
sigh....
Okay, I'll shut up now.
I tend to be more often a lurker than contributer, but I just had to add a comment
about John McDermott. I've been fortunate to see him in concert a couple of times
and he is a wonderful, warm performer. At one concert I had the opportunity to
meet him during the intermission (he made himself freely available to all in the
lobby) and what struck me about him was his obvious interest in talking to each
person individually as though he really wanted to get to know us all.
I'm so glad to here there's a connection between McDermott and GL which I didn't
know about until I read Valerie's review -- nor did I know that McDermott had
recorded "Song for a Winter's Night" and "Home from the Forest". I will probably
buy the CD tomorrow.
Glad to hear everyone had a good time at Massey.

So which Dave Mallett cd did you get? We went to see Dave a week ago, a good
way to combat Post Massey Syndrome.

I got "inches & miles." Copyright is 1990 and appears to be a compilation of
stuff from 1977-1980. I thought it would be a nice introduction for me. I
really like many of the songs - I was playing along with the CD this morning -
and am going to learn a couple. Thanks to whoever mentioned him to me!

Excellent choice! The title song is the first one I heard, and got me hooked
on Dave's music. The first few times I heard it on the radio, I thought it
might be an early Lightfoot recording that I had missed. This was long before
the internet, when you had no idea when an album was going to be released.
