Cold Case Episode in Austria

A few months ago there was information about a "Cold Case" episode
featuring music by GL.

The German name of the episode is "Kein Opfer ist je vergessen".
I just missed that episode on Austrian TV (ORF 1). I didn't know that it
was scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at 9:50 PM Central European Time.
Someone just called me after the film was over - that's the bad news.
The good news is: the episode will be repeated on ORF 1 at 2:05 AM,
Thursday, June 8th. That's in about 3 hours from now.

I'm warming up my recorder.

I looked up the English translation of the title of that episode --
very aptly titled "No Victim is Ever Forgotten." The second title,
"Schuld und Suehne," I can't get an exact translation for, I don't know
why, but, the first two words are "debt and....?" The translator just
puts the second word in *as* the translation, so... maybe it's a name
of a person?? I don't know.

Episode Name - Honor (or as I spell it - Honour ! )

Lilly reopens the case of the 1972 shooting of a Vietnam POW on "Cold
Case," Sunday, November 20 (8:00-9:00 PM) on CBS.

"Honor"
A pair of POW tags found in an abandoned drug house lead Lilly and the
team to reopen the 1972 shooting of a Vietnam POW, Carl.

Lilly learns from Carl's wife, Janet, that he was having trouble
adjusting to being home, and when they question their son Ned (who was
seven when Carl was murdered) they learn that Janet had been having an
affair while Carl was away.

Ken, Janet's boyfriend at the time, tells Lilly that he suspects a
local teenager, Daniel, might have gunned Carl down. Daniel, the son of
a fellow POW, had been pestering Carl about his own father and why he
wasn't home like Carl. As the list of suspect grows, all fingers still
point to Ken.

Hi Sheryl,

I realize that you wanted the English translation because you wanted to
know the English name of the episode. And in a very informative posting
Char already told us that the episode is "Honor".

But as to your question about the translation of the German title
"Schuld und Suehne" I have to tell you that the correct spelling is
"Schuld und Suhne". The letter "u" in the word Suhne has to dots on top
of it. But when writing in internatonal newsgroups we try to avoid using
our modified vowels, because you might not be able to read them. It
depends on the character coding etc. ?? That is why we sometimes write
"ue" instead of the modified "u" with the two dots on top. And that is
why I wrote "Schuld und Suehne".

Let's try it out, this is what it would look like: Schuld und Sühne

The translation of "Schuld und Suehne" would be something like "Guilt
and Atonement" or "Guilt and Expiation". But I know that doesn't sound
good. And maybe that is why the title of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's book is
"Schuld und Suehne" in German, but in English it is "Guilt and
Punishment". Maybe someone who speaks Russian can tell us the original
Russian title and the meaning of that title. Is it closer to "Schuld und
Suehne" or is it closer to "Guilt and Punishment"?

So, but once again, we all know now that that the "Cold Case" episode
with the Lightfoot music is "Honor" and in German speaking countries it

is "Schuld und Suehne".

Just for the record, the German word for "Honor" would be "Ehre".

Thank you, Peter! Right, they're both apt titles. Also, the English
title for Dostoyevsky's book is "Crime and Punishment." Never read it.
