there's a very nice Topic: Question for the new and younger posters
asking how lightheads got hooked at:=
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001896.html
Another interesting Topic: Your least played album at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002018.html
And another Topic: OK, who sang it? at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002017.html
concerning another version of DSMMN
In researching my reply I found a nice site:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002017.html
which sports a bio and an extensive discography
clicking on the album cover thumbnails will show the album track
listing and in most cases each track has a link to a short 30 second
audio (Real Media) clip
useful if you want to check on one of Gord's songs that you might find
is not included in the many clips on Val's site:-
http://www.gordonlightfoot.com
where for example she has all 88 tracks on the Songbook Box Set
I brought this up because there has been a spate of late on corfid of
confessions by a number of people who are not yet fortunate enough to
own every GL album
sking which one to buy next and/or declaring that they have never
heard a particular song and a 30-second sample could therefore be
useful to them
NEWSGROUP HIGHLIGHTS
on the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot at:-
http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
Highlight of the week was undoubtedly the discovery/announcement by
Jenney regarding the upcoming new album "Harmony" that
"There will be a single released of
Inspiration Lady, and a video! The video has already been taped, and
from what
I hear is great."
thread "Inspiration Lady from Harmony"
I would advise hurrying over there pronto (not Toronto) because some
troll posted a message
under the subject: "alt.music.lightfoot down the pan"
Meanwhile Douglas Crowe continued to be troubled medically and
received an offer of help from a new poster (a doctor) who practices
in Brazil
Ron a.k.a. blackbery wine created a minor hoo ha by bringing up his
discovery of more recordings at the alt.binaries.mp3.bootlegs
newsgroup but fortunately gave it the very same subject name as an
earlier thread about the Reno recording in 2000 by "duff"
Your very alert reporter spotted that both Duff and Douglas reside in
Lexington Kentucky So I have sent them an e-mail suggesting that they
meet tonight in the snug and welcoming gathering place known as old
rik's chat room. (actually Rik Stevens is not that old!!)
Now where was I oh yes this evening's chat
as usual
9 PM EST at:-
http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
to avoid getting bumped as Gaby did last week
take a close look at the mIRC chat client
fully illustrated details at
http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
continued to be lively
Jim Nasium from somewhere in England was astounded by the ignorance of
a Canadian lady on a BBC quiz programme who was unable to name 5
famous Canadians
Sundry Americans then showed how knowledgeable they were and this
sparked off a new topic "Pop Quiz" which sounds promising
I myself added to an earlier thread on Gord's affinity with cats
and/or dogs when I spotted on ebay:-
http://www.ebaylightfoot.shorturl.com
that a punter in Japan was auctioning a Japanese single of Sundown
with a rare picture sleeve with a fine shot of Gord with a dog.For as
long as this auction is current you can see this pic at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002021.html
On the subject of Pets
I then posted my two favourite kitten pics a few days ago as a new
"Small Talk" forum topic at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000285.html
last night I was able to lead Kimberley (ex-mytoyota) through the
procedure to display on corfid any picture that is already on a web
site, a most useful feature that in my mind sets corfid apart from the
Newsgroup where Google studiously ignores any binary content (although
if you follow the NG via your browser's Newsreader then attachments of
jpegs etc will show up)
The other feature of corfid I really like is that you can see your
posting immediately and if you post as a registerd member you can if
necessary then edit it or even delete it(due to my penchant for typos
this is invaluable!!!)
Bill (W)allace started what could be an interesting thread on "Playing
PAL DVDs in the USA" a subject of which know a bit and will contribute
to in due course:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000286.html
two mentions of Gord by late night chat show host Conan O'Brien were
quoted on this topic:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002027.html
Which is a neat cue for today's chat room advert
following last week's successful chat during which 11 turned up we
will be open as usual this evening at 9 PM EST at:-

It will be interesting to see if Gaby makes it again and whether she
has bitten the bullet and installed mIRC at last details at :-

was the revelation by a new poster who had been posting as "trudiewannabe"
that her real name is Shazia. it transpired that the Sting to her tale is
that she rather fancied herself as Mrs Gordon Sumner!!
I havejust checked my facts on this via Google where I also learned that an
anagram of Sting's real name is "grunted minor songs" which is mightily
unfair!!

"Topic: What is a Lighthead to you?"
this youthful Lighthead was also worried about the whereabouts of a hitherto
prolific UK poster rejoicing in the name Major Sir Jerry Pudding who replied
that some unimaginative pillock had registered that name so he was unable to
use it. Unfortunately sir Gerald then used another unregistered name Major
Surgery Pending no longer quite so apt now Gord has had his hopefully final
surgery Oh well
Another new corfid poster wanted to know an explanation of the great song
"Race Among The Ruins" and was promptly told that a young and then eligable
Derek Kidd had submitted a lengthy analysis on the Newsgroup way back in
1997. which prompts me to emphasize to all posters old and new that amongst
the Newsgroup's almost 30,000 threads you can find discussion on just about
every GL song especially if it is called "Cabaret" and possibly features
sundry Zippo lighter noises!!

Handily accesible from this special link:-http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
Ed Mullen found himself bereft of Kleenex
And a Canadian poster pointed out that the Linus Entertainment site had put
up some new Gord items preparatory to their release of Harmony which bodes
well for their probable publicity plans for the album and the man
I will add a link to one of the pictures they used and for anyone reading
this on corfid the picture sould in fact have appeared below this link but
unfortunately Linus have cut the pic up into 4 segments so click on this

Highlights week February 21 to 27 2004
On both message boards the big news was the discovery that Linus
Entertainment in a shrewd move at garnering advance publicity for
May's new Harmony album
had released three tracks for immediate download from Apple's pay per
track itunes.
Other postings on the Newsgroup at:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
included the finding by Char of she said some added archive material
on the great CBC audio/video archive site
although I have myself yet to find the one apparent extra audio file
Corfid at:- http://www.corfid.shorturl.com was relatively quiet
I added a 1975 picture of Gord with Dylan that I found to a topic
comparing the two erstwhile friend's relative popularity
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002016.html
Now the distressing story of last Friday's non-chat when at least 7 of
us were unable to get in either via mIRC or the browser link
Newsgroup readers please note that Ed Mullen reported on his problem
getting in under the incorrect thread title of "friday chat"
the current thread is "friday's chat"
so his posting got appended to an old thread about the Yahoo chat room
the browser link to what we call "Rik's chat room" is and has been for
the last getting on for five years
http://chat.cjb.net/gordonlightfootchat
but ever since last Friday this page "cannot be displayed" dammit!!
similarly the mIRC link I set up as originaly guided by the room's
founder Rik Stevans and
as I described at:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
to access the chat room via cjb.net would not function
But as of today http://www.cjb.net
opens fine so it does not on the surface appear that cjb.net has
ceased to be
Now I am not privy to all the arrangements that Rik made when he set
this up in 1999
(at one point he was muttering about a change that meant he had to pay
for it but he later denied this)
I will copy this to him in case he can shed light on the problem.
Nor do I even partly understand how the room operates i.e, where in
cyberspace is it.
All I do know is that that after looking up mIRC help I found that
they recommended trying alternative IRC servers
of which there are a great variety as detailed at:-
http://www.mirc.com/servers.html
so as I was last week using an old issue (6.01) of the mIRC client
program
(A new version 6.14 was released on Tuesday as it happens)
I experimented and at the point where you have to press the "connect
to IRC server" button
I tried the drop-down menu and then I selected from the list then
presented a couple and found that
on my mIRC
rik's chat room is set for
"irc.cjb.net" as per Rik's 1999 instructions
I was mightily surprised that when I selected almost at random
what was shown as"DALnet: Random server"
amazed to be presented with the identical channel listing I had set up
for the cjb server link
with the first channel shown as #gordonlightfootchat
today it refuses to connect (see below) but lo and belold if I being
biased by Ed Mullen's technical prowess
select instead what is listed as:
"DALnet: US,GA, Acool"
then press connect to IRC server
I gain entry to the chat room as usual
way cool!!!
Anyone who is not following me can see the various standard (cjb)
dialog box screenshots at my mIRC descriptive page on my
site:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
the /georgia link per edit is to
acool.ga.us.dal.net
whereas the cjb link was to
irc.cjb.net
it follows then that the direct browser link must be
instead of http://chat.cjb.net/gordonlightfootchat
It could be http://acool.ga.us.dal.net/gordonlightfootchat
wrong that page cannot be displayed either
duh...
Ok lets try the DALnet:Random server link that worked last week
per edit this is to IRC server
irc.dal.net similar to cjb's format
now if I wait long enough this connects
so the browser link MUST be http://chat.dal.net/gordonlightfootchat
Wrong again
(thinks why is it that using impeccable logic such as I used there so
often fails to produce the right answer?)
wel at least I tried and now by copy of this to Rik and Ed any otherr
bright ideas
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Failing that I will get in using the mIRC dALnet link this evening and
see if anyone else shows up
I am reluctant to suggest at this point that we retry the Yahoo room
not least because Susan amongst others had problems
getting in there too
But I will also be on AIM note AIM which is NOT the same as AOL
Instant Messenger
see http://www.litlejim.shorturl.com for an explantion
My AOl name is okyoutellme for reasons I won't go into at this moment
but you can guess!!!
tonight at 9PM EST
it might be possible to set up a room there
John Fowles
http://pub41.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/3487845653 at 9pm EST
if you wish to do a quick check on my proposed new room as it is go
to:-
http://pub33.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/2750193584
Neither room as far as I can tell is actually located in a "pub"
OK that's it for another week
John,
you are such a treasure!
As one who is unable to be part of the Friday Chat (geez, guys, a gal has to
sleep sometime!), I find these
'highlights' invaluable.
Good work, Mr. Fowles.
Bru
I'll second that, Bru. It's great to have a weekly summary, and it brings
the newsgroup and Corfid together.
The link John provided to Borderstone's picture doesn't work for me. Here's
the correct link. I hope it works.
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002082.html
Cathy
http://www.cathycowette.com
I agree. The weekly wrap is an excellent part of this group.
Well done, indeed!
David

a few of my pet peeves mainly bad design exmples but I learned that
"In America, the person calling does not pay extra to reach a mobile.
The extra cost (if any) is borne by the mobile phone receiving the
call."
This as with the fact that in America you switch a light switch on
upwards is the exact opposite of what I was used to in England.
Regarding cell/mobile phone charges my wife says this depends on the
particular plan you are on.
On the other hand a true troll trying not too hard to be invisible
suggested that Gord's surgery might have had a "dysfunction"
(sic-very sick) side effect. this unneccessary posting drew the
correct "ignore" response.
And so to the unsatisfactory situation with the chat room
Rik's chat room is still not accessible either through the browser
link or mIRC at cjb.net although as reported last week
it can be entered via mIRC using the alternative IRC server EF.net
last week I said we would try the alternative Bravenet room that Rik
currently has a link to on his site
and I joined Bill Hall and Gary Sprang there for a while,
But no matter what we tried we were unable to get access from Susan's
computer (on a different ISP and phone line)
trying with Internet Explorer the Java applet refused to load and
switching to Netscape produced the same really stupid
"upgrade required to your Windows Virtual Machine" advice that plagued
us when we tried to use the alternative Yahoo Group
chat room a while back.
I later upgraded her I.E. to version 6 but still the applet refuses to
open.I got side tracked this week so failed to contact
Cathy's son who knows about mIRC to see if he could find a way to set
up mIRC to access the bravenet room (searches of both
bravenet and mIRC help were unhelpful and a google search gave no
useful results. So where does that leave us??
Bravenet is clearly not acessible by everybody (I suspect others had
the same problem as Susan last Friday). Ideally we could
use Rik's original room or a replacement and access via mIRC but
despite strenuous cajoling by Rik in 1999/2000 and me in my
adverts for well over year too few potential chatters seem prepared
to take the small amount of trouble to acquire then set
up mIRC. So for tonight I propose that anyone interested meet in the
bravenet room at 9pm EST at:-
http://pub41.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/3487845653
If only a few turn up I will get round to contacting Cathy's son.
Failing a workable answer there I will amend my mIRC
instruction page to add how to change from the existing cjb.net to
EF.net and then plan on using that next week.
if anybody reading this has any comments or better ideas please say so
either here or to me by e-mail to
