I have been quietly taking part in this NG for a few months and have
only posted a few messages. May the following post help explain why I
am greatful for this NG and also for the Lightfoot Web Sites.
I live in Salzburg, Austria but I grew up in Elliot Lake, Ontario. I
even lived near Orillia (holy ground) for two years. As life goes and
for reasons I care not to mention, we went to Europe.
When I discovered Lightfoot in the early seventies (in Austria), I was
fascinated and as you can understand, for me GL's music was sort of a
connection to Canada. But I am sure there's more to it than just the
relationship to Ontario. There are many other great Canadian artists who
by far haven't affected me as much as Lightfoot's music has.
Although you won't find very many Lightfoot albums in a European record
shop, you can always get the latest one and might be lucky to obtain
some of the older ones.
The release of "Sundown" was absolute magic (Somewhere USA, Is There
Anyone Home, Seven Island Suite ...). A year later, April 1975, I
considered the album "Cold on the Shoulder" as a personal gift. As if
it were exactly what I was waiting for.
In April 1975 I travelled to Toronto. You can imagine how overwhelmed I
was with the presence of Lightoot that you could sense almost everywhere
in the city at that time. For example an April issue of RPM Weekly
featuring Gordon Lightfoot on the cover lifted my spirits by about two
and a half miles. And hearing "Did She Mention My Name" (for me a new
one) for the first time on a Toronto radio station really made my day. I
remember how astonished I was when looking for Lightfoot albums at Sam's
in Yonge Street. Piles and piles of GL-records all over the place. Yonge
Street had a wonderful atmosphere then which I was not able to
rediscover when I returned for a visit nine years later in 1984. I
wonder which Yonge Street Lightfoot will sing about on his new album.
But all in all I think Toronto is one of the greatest cities in the
world. (I fly around there very often with my MS Flight Simulator.)
But back to the spring of 1975. On the ninth of May I attended a
beautiful Lightfoot Concert in Hamilton Ontario. I was lucky to get one
of the last tickets for the first show. Not a very good seat quite far
at the back. The concert was great, but when the first show was over I
asked at the box office if they had a ticket (maybe someone cancelled)
for the second show that night. And lucky me, someone did cancel, I got
the only remaining ticket for the second appearance: Row F, Seat 5 !!!
After I had returned to Austria in the summer of 1975 I was pleased to
hear that Lightfoot was planning to tour Europe in the fall. I attended
a superb GL-concert in Munich Germany on October 27, 1975.
By the way, this recent NG thread about Lightfoot phrases has made me
aware of the fact that there is not one line written by Lightfoot that
would be displaced if posted in that thread, not even the line:
"I'm caught by the minstrel愀 misfortune of being forever displaced."

I agree it's a great city--and I too have buzzed it myself a couple of times on
the ol' Flight Simulator!

Man in T/O is the most dangerous store in the WORLD. Especially if you are a
GL fan. Please come back and talk to us more often, your post was very
enjoyable.
