Of course any Gordon Lightfoot concert is a great concert! He looked
well (at least from Row T) and for the most part sang very well. A
couple of songs he seemed to have trouble with, but all in all it was
great see Gord and the guys (who he never introduced). The only real
disappointment for me personally, was that he didn't perform Canadian
Railroad Trilogy. As a displaced Canadian, it's the one song I
definitely want to hear every show. Oh, well. Maybe next year!

Thanks for the info "Die Hard Leafs Fan"... CRT is a very long song
with lots of high notes. I know he used to do it every concert, in the
70's. But lately maybe there are nights he's not up to it ??

All the best,

As for CRT, I wonder there maybe another reason he didn't play it (I'm
referring to Sandra Martin's article about Red Shea in the Globe and
Mail: "Dedicated Lightfoot fans still talk about Mr. Shea's
"breathtaking" guitar solo in The Canadian Railroad Trilogy, a
performance that was recorded live at Massey Hall in 1969 and released
on the album, Sunday Concert.")

Breathtaking is an understatement indeed.
Red was arguably the finest guitar player Canada has ever produced.
We shall not see the likes of him again...

My first Lightfoot concert was the last night of the Massey Hall
concerts in 1974. Back then it was just Gord, Terry and Rick. But Red
was in the audience and Gord invited him on stage to play a song or two
and I remember thinking how special it was to be there to hear him.
After the show, we decided to hang out by the stage door and although
all I had was this little piece of cardboard, Red, Rick, Terry and Gord
all came out that way and each of them signed it. A treasured piece of
cardboard indeed.

(In subsequent years I started bringing my Lightfoot music books to
collect autographs, and one of them even has yours, Richard. Thanks again.)

At the visitation, Bruce Good said to me,
"Well, Richard...we are now at the end of an era!"
I instantly realized what a poignant statement he had made.
Red was a profound influence on the entire folk/country oriented scene.
His influence was both pervasive and persuasive,
Not just Gordon, but Ian & Sylvia, Tommy Hunter, and the Good Brothers --
just to name a few.

Ian Tyson is coming to Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD on July 23.
I've never seen Ian live and I'm really looking forward to this. Rams
Head On Stage (http://www.ramsheadtavern.com/annapolis/onstage.html) is
about a 230 seat venue, very intimate and a really great place to see a
show. It's a place I'd love to see Gord play, but he's probably too
popular for such a small place. (Although they do have big name acts
come through. Kris Kristofferson played there last year when he was a
Kennedy Center Honors recipient. The Smothers Brothers, Neville
Brothers, Shelby Lynne, Beth Nielson Chapman are all there in the coming
months.)

Hi Richard,

Saw Ian last night. Although he had caught a virus and he came out
talking in a somewhat hoarse voice, his singing voice got better as the
night went on and he was fantastic. As were Gord Maxwell and Gord Matthews.

He even signed CDs after the show, so I got to meet him, too. It was a
great night.
