I don't know about Shel Silverstein writing a book and doing cartoons for
Playboy, but he did write and perform 70's hits like Sylvia's Mother and
Cover Of The Rolling Stone with a band whose name escapes me right now. Oh
yeah, now I remember - Dr. Hook's Medicine Show?

I'm not aware of any other musical collaborations that made it on record,
but here is a quote from Gord about a Christmas in Nashville back in the
late 60's or possibly early 70's.

Lightfoot was in Nashville working with Bob Neuwirth. "So Christmas day
Neuwirth was off with Waylon Jennings and Shel Silverstein. That left Vince
Matthews and myself with time on our hands. Matthews and I went over to the
White Spot - one of the original fast food outlets in the US and we had fast
food for Christmas! And it was fun. We talked about music all afternoon."

Shel Silverstein (among others) did the soundtrack for the movie "Ned
Kelly", starring Mick Jagger. Waylon Jennings did the singing. I can
only recall the title of one song, "Shadow of the Gallows", which was
released as a single. I used to see Shel on talk shows (Johnny Carson?).
He was very funny in a strange sort of way. I remember seeing him
sitting down, singing raucous songs, and picking a banjo. Am I
remembering correctly? I have a book of children's poems by Shel S.
called "A Light in the Attic", also illustrated by him. The name of one
poem is "Wild Strawberries"! And, yes, I remember the Playboy cartoons
(blush). He usually drew himself into the cartoons. I always thought
he was a little crazy, but then so am I, so I liked him a lot. I have
been trying to find out if he is still living and working but haven't
been successful.

I never realized until I had children, but "On Susan's Floor" on the
"Don Quixote" album is by the children's writer and poet Shel
Silverstein.

Small world.

Wayne,

Did he give you any background on "Susan"?

About a year ago when this song was previously being discussed here on the
group, I received email from a guy in Nashville who was apparently writing a
screenplay on the real-life "Susan" from the song.

I'd imagine that for every movie made, there are thousands of screenplays
written that go unproduced - but, it would be great if this one made it to
the big screen.

Lightfoot could do the soundtrack and take a cameo in the film. Hey, I'd
stand in line to shell out my $7 to see that!

I remember reading number of screenplays that go unproduced, and it's
staggering! But, I agree, if GL did the soundtrack and had a cameo in the
film, I sure as heck wouldn't wait for the video!

Not really. He asked me what I knew about her. I told him I knew that it was
basically the story that was described in the song. She was part of the
Nashville scene and musicians on their way up (or down) often found a place
to spend the night at her place, plus meet and make friends, share songs
etc.

He told me that these things were true and also wanted to know GL's
connection to Matthews and Silverstein. I gave him some info including the
Christmas story about the three of them I posted last week. If that scene
appears in the movie, I'm going after a cut!

He didn't offer any new info to me, I would guess that when you're writing a
screenplay, a person might tend not to want to divulge too much of their
story.

Anyway, hopefully there'll be something come of it.
