For 2 years I loved Zeppelin and i still do but I thought Bonham was the
greatest drummer of all time. But then I heard Keith Moon, who blew my socks
off live and at the studio but especially live. After about a 3 month dosage of
nothing but Who and Moon I went back and reliezed just how easy it was to play
Bonham's songs! I can now play basically anything Bonham could on the drums but
I have some serious trouble with moony! *wow* Bonham is great but trust me, if
you say he is better than Moon you are just a bunch of die-hard fans who won't
look outside of the Zeppelin music.I'm not saying Bonham is bad...He
rocks.....But compared to Keith moon this man is well......nothing!

OK To each his own dude, but BONHAM Rocks! You need to take a new lesson in
drumming if you think you are Mr. It & can play as well as Bonham. If so,get
your ass on stage on start making millions of fans happy and start raking in
the bucks! If you can play as well as bonham, contact an agent & I am more than
sure he will contact Jimmy Page and you two will become the best of buddys. If
Bonham was a" Nothing" why was he so well revered and respected by every single
drummer in the Rock & Roll world? Oh and lets don't leave out the MaSSES of
Bonham fans. Nothing!? Well thats just 1 mans puffed up heads opinion. Go Rock
the world and then tell us Bonhams a "Nothing"

Actually, Moon innovative as he may have been was a notorious nightmare to
record in the studio.Had problems with the basic groove. But man he made up for
it live didn't he!

Bonham on the other hand always had the groove. Saying John Henry Bonham was
overratted is ridiculous. After him nothing was the same.

This is an arguement that has come up many times already. Keith Moon was
very
good but a panic drummer. Bashing away, uncontrolled. No wonder it is
difficult to repeat it, it would have been difficult for him as well.
OK Bonzo kept it relatively simple, especially in the studio. But still
perfect in all it's simplicity. So did JPJ, he said once in an interview
that
he could do the Jacco pastorius thing, a hundred notes in a measure, but
what
is it worth? So wanna learn how to immitate Keith Moon? just go wild, no
hihat, some speed and crazyness. This counts for guitar as well, everybody
can
learn as quickly how to play simple solo's and then they get on to the speed
and do the fast stuff. Amazing. But then they got to play single notes again
and they are nothing. LZ proved that they were very professional, to do
things
simple where they really could go wild. The same simplicity that made eg
pink
Floyd great.

Moon carried a vastly greater potential than Bonham but refused to practice
or play outside of recording and live appearances. His style was unique and
not before or since has there been a drummer that was as exciting both on
record and in concert, the whole time throwing all the rules and discipline
of a drummer out the window. Although not the most technical of drummers, he
made up for his lack of time keeping skills with speed and power, often
filling tiny gaps with elaborate and explosive rolls.

John was a fabulous addition to LZ but didnot carry either the weigth or
influence in the band as Moon did with Who. Too bad both were wankers. At
least Moon had the decency to die away from the band falling in Mama Cass'
wake and her flat.

Is that a question or a statement? I would like to say something about Kieth
Moon>He also has a bad case of the same thing that attacks me(ACHILLES syndrom)
Its the way one feels inside, listen to ACHILLES LAST STAND & this is how we
feel. Its the race & the rush & the restlessnes. Listen to the speed of the
guitar & the beat of the drums & this is how an ACHILLES BRAIN FEELS. He was
not a retard & I use that word respectfully,he was just a madman fighting the
madness. What a better way to fight it ,than to beat the hell outta your drums
or play you guitar like a crazy person, feeling the burn & burning off the
steam & the restlesness. The brain is raceing & its like in a huraca, spinning
& running & raceing round & round, never finding that perfect restfull place. To
many thoughts & to much pain till you go a tad mad. Good thing I do have that
restfull place (GOD) cause if I didn't I would be running around the world in a
mad race to ease the rushing ACHILLES SYNDROM. Moony was kewl & fun I am sure
of it.

i kind of agree here...bonham is a great drummer, especially for the kind of
music zeppelin does, they don't need the heavy thrash-and-kill sound, but keith
moon's definately got his sound down, it's probably from the heavy influence of
surf music.

I believe that Keith Moon and Jon Bonham are very good drummers. But Neil Peart
of Rush is Even better. He has more drums than any other drummer, and longer
solos, and has created some very complex song structures. I also believe that
Jon Bonham is the 2nd greatest drummer ever.

It amazes me that people equate more drums in a kit to better drumming. Listen
to the greats of Rock and Roll like Bonham, Moon, Watts and Starkey and be
amazed that they put out the sound they did with small kits. If Peart needs
more drums than the basic kit to sound almost as good as the above greats, he
must really be not that good when given a 5 piece kit.

I've been sitting here listening to some tunes tonight and I was
thinking how Jimmy screwed up when he got together with Coverdale--he
should have gotten together with David Lee Roth. That would have been
some good rocking there. Or maybe it would be good if David Lee Roth
just joined the reformed, new and improved Led Zeppelin, with Ringo on
drums and David Lee Roth singing backup vocals, and from time to time,
Robert and David Lee could sing a duet.

Personally I was thinking that some people are taking things a little
seriously and
then I read this today. LOL! Thanks to Steve the 'Lemon and his history
lessons.

"One
time someone asked him about the technicalities he uses when playing the
drums, to which Bonham answered, "Technicalities, what the hell are you
going
on about?" Bonham raised his hand into the air and said, "This is my
technicality," as his arm fell down in a forceful manner. "Hand to drum,
that's what it is, hand to drum," says Bonham. "I'm not trying to be any
superstar. I just do my bit as one quarter of Led Zeppelin. When I have a
solo I don't ever imagine drummers around watching me. I don't try to
impress people who play the drums. I play for people. I don't try and
perform the most amazing changes in tempo, or make people watch me. I just
couldn't do that - it would take away the essence of Jimmy's guitar and
Robert's voice. John Paul and myself lay down a thick backdrop, that's what
we do."

I t seems he was doing it al for music lovers not music analysers all the
time.
Just had a sad thought. I'll never get to meet Bonzo to thank him, well at
least not
for a long time, I hope.

If that's the criteria you use for the best drummer then it is time you
listen
to Cesar Zuiderwijk from Golden Earring. He had the biggest sets of em all,
and he used to climb on top of his drumcage and start tapping his special
drumsuit with built in drumsample patches, and then move over to another
place
where hye would put his hands in laser beams what would trigger other
drumsamples. The man who wrote a composition for a thousand drummers, of
which
some under water.

I saw Golden Earring in 1967 (Easter Sunday) and was very impressed with the

At the same show, believe it or not the Who were totally blown away in my

amen brother.
Bonham was great, he had a groove, and also the nerve to call himself the self
proclaimed "greatest drummer in the world."
To me Moon is the greatest drummer in Rock and Roll.
Drummers usually play to back up the more recognizable guitarists and singers.

Moon, on the other hand, took drumming to a new level. From smashing his drum
kits, blowing them up, standing on top of them; he made people notice that a
drummer can be a showman.
I think any drummer would agree with me that Bonham's material is much easier
to play than Moon's.
Unlike every other drummer, Moon had an identity. You can tell when he plays,
and he's never been matched in what he did.

I think so - but isn't that called "the Twilight Zone"? Or do I just think
of it that way because that's the part that *I* remember most? ;o)

Yes well hm do you know that Golden Earring easily broke down the record of
long nummers from LZ? They had a long bass solo and a long drum solo in
Radar
love at the end live. Talk about guitars, rinus Gerritsen with his twin neck
Dan Electro Bass guitar swinging on stage doing his solo, last year he broke
his pelvis and 8 weeks later he was in full action back on stage.
Sorry, little bit nostalgia for me, I don't say they were better than LZ but
they were(and still are) the LZ of Holland.

Since you have no credible percussion experience, and of little
value to say on most subjects, music especially, your vote for
Bonham condemns him from the get-go.

Bonham is in the bottom of the top ten of drummers I listen to.
He can't even hold Doane Perry's sticks. adn he is dead and
burning in hell like a marsmallow at a Boy Scout camp.

Neither Bonham nor Moon will ever be matched, but Bonham's beats are better, he
is more powerful, and he has a little more skill. Bonham also plays a much
better solo than Moon.

Bonzo - When I did not know all Zep songs I sometimes recognized them

Ian Paice - nice how he accompanied Purple's improvs.

Carl Palmer - excellent with ELP

Neil Peart - also writes nice lyrics

Cozy Powell - RIP

Nick D'Virgilio - just listen to his vocals with Spock's Beard

Mike Portnoy

Bill Bruford

Imho I think it is not only technical skill which makes an excellent
drummer, there's a lot more: feeling, songwriting and the way he plays
together with the bassist.

Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Simon Philipps

and not to forget: JASON Bonham
