WHo do you reckon is the better guitar player of the two,Knopfler and Page.
I'm a huge fan of the Zeps but I'd have to say Dire Straits (along with
Cream and The Doors) is my favorite band.
There's this live album by Dire Straits called alchemy which was recorded
pre Brothers in Arms in 1983 at Hamersmith Odeon. This is a truly remarkable
album. It produced a highly aclaimed 14 minute version of Telegraph Road
which still gets played on radio in obscure hours and is still a rock
favourite when radio's do those top 1000 songs of all time ext...
This is a really raw album.Unbelievable, faultless guitar work from Knopfler
who played HARD CORE for 80 minutes straight.I don't think there is
anybody in the world who could compete with his live preformances.Sure there are a alot of more appealing guitarists but this guy is my favourite.I
personally think he's better than plant , and rates up there with jimi...

Don't get me wrong, I love Page and his work in LEd Zep. But I'm
afraid I'd have to give the nod to Knopfler as well. His guitar work,
much like David Gilmour's, Eric Clapton's or Eric Johnson's, is always
extrmemely tasteful. Sultans of Swing may be an old song, but the
guitar solo at the end always gives me chills.
Technically speaking, Mark Knopfler has the edge but is somewhat
overshadowed by Page's flamboyant style.
N.Knowles
Knopfler is up there but he is still below Jimmy Page and David Gilmour in
my books, but that is just a musical preference not a technical judgement.
Take care,
Jacob
Having seen Knopfler, Page, CLapton, Gilmour, Satriani, Vai, Zappa, and a
whole lotta other guitarists live, I would state that Gilmour is one of
the less imaginative ones. Every solo sounds alike. I would say the
same of Clapton throughout much of the 80's, when I think the mindrotting
effect of working with Phil Collins hurt his playing. He seems to have
gotten a jolt up the wazoo since the late 80's. WHile Page may now be a
shadow of his former self, he remains one of the best rock guitar
composers ever. Knopfler is also quite good, but I think you're
comparing apples and oranges.

But his CLEAN guitar tone is an acquired taste. I doubt you'll find many
accolytes of this laid-back style on the Led Zeppelin newsgroup.

Yeah Jimmy Page rules , and then theres Hendrix ... Mark Knopfler is
canny but no where near as good as page , no point even comparing the
two! <g>

None of you lot heard of Zappa? Much as I like Page and co., Zappa was

Comparing Mark Knopfler with Jimmy Page is almost blasphemy. Mark
is great. "Sultans.." is good, etc etc. But anyone who has listened to Led
Zep, and particularly Jimmy Page, from his Yardbirds days, through Led
Zep, cannot entertain any doubt as to who is the greater guitarist.
As a matter of fact, I think it is pretty amazing that the 3
greatest guitarists of all-time (barring possibly Hendrix) graduated
through the Yardbirds. (namely, Clapton, Beck, and Page)
If you count guitaring simply as a matter of fancy stunts,
divorced from the innovation involved, then you could even include the
likes of Satriani among the guitaring greats. But that is no the way it
is.
Knopfler is innovative and he has the mellow tone to his guitar
which is certainly unique, but listen to Led Zep #3, the joyous whooping
guitar on Celebration Day, and the peaceful accoustics on Tangerine will
certainly convince anyone that Page is the greater.

***How can you say that comparing Knopfler to Page is blashamy when you
say that Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton are among the best three guitarists
in the world? If you think that I'm being a smart arse then listen to this.
Eric Clapton has been quoted saying that Knopfler is clearing the best in
the world (This was said at the end of the eighties) and that when Knopfler
invited him to be a guest at a Dire Straits concert he didn't feel comfort-
able because people expect so much of him and he was frightened that knopfl
er would show him up.I'm not going to argue about who is the better player
out of Page and Knopfler (Although I personally favour Knopfler),but when
you say that old slow hand and Jeff Beck are superior to him ,you are
totally blowing the credability of your views out of the water.Yes , I'm
a huge Led Zep fan and I have heard #3,but when you compare the preformance ofPage in this particular album to that of Mark knopfler in Alchemy Live
you will see that Jimmy Page really doesn't compare technically with
mark Knopfler, even if Page is more famous and obviously a better performer.Anyway , it's all personal opinion (even eric claptons),so who
really knows, the best guitar player in the world could be some flaminco
player sitting on a street corner in downtown Spain.

Huh ? Why is that ? I get the impression that you don't think
Jeff Beck is much of a guitarist, in which case you are sadly mistaken.
Go see him play some time and you will be amazed.

Some people go to see guitarists play, other people go to hear music.
There are plenty of guitarists noone is even considering from other genres
that, technically speaking, might be "better" than Knopfler or Page, but
the fact is, if they play music you don't like, who cares if they can play
better?
I don't like Dire Straights, so obviously I prefer Page.
I also have never been impressed with the songwriting ability of Jeff
Beck, regardless of his facility as a player. Beck almost defined the
genre that Vai and Satriani play in over 2 decades ago when he started
recording instrumental "guitar masturbation" albums, none of which really
move me at all. And when it comes to Clapton? The guy is as whitebread
as Yanni now. Talk about a far cry from his Cream days...

Definately AGREE !!
Jeff Beck is the most awe-inspiring guitarist I ever had the pleasure to see play
live ... and I've seen alot of guitarists! (Hendrix not included, though). Knopfler
is more of a song composer.
Pat
Yeah, best guy I ever heard was a chap called Narciso Yepes (I think).
Though he probably don't play street corners.
Who cares who is best? The guitar is a beautiful instrument, and to hear
it played well is always a pleasure, whoever is playing it.

I suggest you listen to Clapton's last blues album, "From the Cradle."
Great stuff. He plays w/ incredible emotion.
