I think this is the best way to compare bands. List your favorite 100
songs and see which bands have the most representation. That is your
best 12 bands of all time. Of course your list will be different than
mine.

It's your typical list of nonsensical, arbitrary criteria. You might as
well insist that at least one band member had blonde hair, or the name of
the band must contain at least two vowels. None of your reasons make any
sense.

Anyone who actually knows more about rock than a lonely musical tourist who
calls himself "Raja" will naturally have a different list. And what a
surprise, your formula with it's artificial criteria decides that your
favorite bands were the best in the history of rock--now who could have
predicted that? Imbecile.

I'm not spending all fricking day narrowing down 100 favorite songs.
My list tomorrow would be different from my list today.
Many of the songs on my list would undoubtably NOT be "rock" songs by
even the broadest definition, such as "The Great American
Dream" (David Massengill) or "Hatikvah" (national anthem of Israel),
or "Kol Nidre" (prayer).
When Richard Thompson (better guitar player than Jimmy Page, and a
great songwriter) was asked to list his favorite songs of the last
1,000 years, he actually started in the Middle Ages, and went through
the Renaissance, 1700s, 1800s, etc. before including modern popular
songs.
The result was his album 1,000 YEARS OF POPULAR MUSIC. You should
check it out, instead of harping on all this tripe.

I think I'd struggle to come up with a list of my 100 favourite songs.
Every time I'd get to writing down no 100, I'd think of something else
that should be in the list and have to juggle things about and - well,
life's too short. As for Desert Island Discs and picking just 8! Well,
it's a different set of circumstances, but still an impossible task to
carve such a list in stone.

But mine will be more meaningful. I actually LISTEN to music, rather
than letting arbitrary Internet lists dictate to me what my favorite
bands should be.
Besides, my tastes change all the time. (BTW, that, my friend, is the
hallmark of a REAL music fan - someone who is diverse and listens to a
great variety, not just one group or genre) A song like "Take It To
The Limit" by the Eagles would never have made my top 100 list as
recently as two months ago - now, because it fits with a particular
situation in my life, it's definitely top 100 and probably top 10.
But it may not be there even next week. With what my friends know
about me, any top 100 list of mine that didn't include at least 5 Who
songs, 5 Beatles songs, "Go Your Own Way" and "Comfortably Numb" would
be viewed with suspicion. Yet I would also have Peter, Paul and Mary,
Dylan, the Band, Carrie Underwood and "Free Bird" in there as well. I
guarantee you that my top 100 (of the moment, since it would change
significantly next week) would include a lot more that 12 groups or
artists.
Stop trying to present yourself as the ultimate musical authority on
this newsgroup. You're not even in the ballpark.
Without doubt, the Beatles, not Led Zeppelin, are the greatest rock
and roll band of all time. Period. End of story. I'd like to hear
any Led Zeppelin fan try to tell me differently.
