I heard that Reverend Jim Jones was a Zeppelin fan, and occasionally
blasted a Zep song over the Jonestown loudspeaker.

Dave Grohl, late of Nirvana fame, currently lead of Foo Fighters, started as a
Bonham-esque drummer. He has JB's symbol tattooed on his arm. I never got to
see Nirvana, but did get to see DG take the drums once during a Foo show at the
Palladium. Even tho Taylor Hawkins is plenty competent, DG was truly amazing.
Definitely one of the best drummers I have ever heard. Not a big guy either.
Do you folks think that Bonham style drumming requires a hefty guy? (Looking
forward to your answer in particular, Stephania). :)

Oh, boy...when I'm invited to respond (and sometimes when I'm not), I can't
pass up an opportunity, can I?:). Anyway, here's my take on it:
Well, to begin with, I'm significantly smaller than John Bonham was:). I'm
only 5'4" and I'm not what you would call hefty:). But I am pretty strong, owing
to a long softball career (I was pretty buff in high school...tee hee). While I'm
certainly not as strong as Bonham was, I can certainly hit the drums pretty hard.
My high school band director was often heard to shout, "Stephanie! Could you
please not hit the damn things so hard!"
However, having said that, I've heard that Bonham started out simply beating
the crap out of his drums, but later learned how to get a louder sound without
hitting as hard. I never learned this, so I continue to beat the crap out of my
drums:).
Another thing...John Bonham used the biggest sticks available, which is
physically impossible for me, since I don't have Bonzo-sized hands (this also makes
"Four Sticks" impossible for me:)).
So, to answer Camille's question, I don't believe it necessarily takes a hefty
guy to drum the Bonzo way. Carmine Appice, who had a style similar to Bonzo's,
wasn't that large of a guy, and neither was Ginger Baker, and neither am I:).

NB--In no way is this post intended to mean that I feel my drumming talent is equal
to Mr. Bonham's:).
Rave On,

Bonzo wasn't all that hefty, actually, especially in the early days. I remember
reading somewhere that he said it was all in the wrists, that he never bashed the
hell out of his drums, preferring to simply "let the sticks come down and meet
them." Reminds me of Babe Ruth's claim that his secret to hitting home runs was to
simply redirect the force of the thrown ball. Bonzo claimed never to have broken a
skin in his life.

Sit down for this one:

Steve Lawrence is a major Zep fan. When he told me that I looked at him at
first and said, "*WHAT* did you say?" He said it again. He said that
Robert's vocal range, even now, puts most singers to shame. Plus, he said
that Robert's stage presence is astounding. Just blew me away.

Let's see..who else has told me that like Zep:

1. Steve Perry
2. Bro. Ray Charles
3. Stevie Wonder
4. Savion Glover (tap-dance phenom)
5. Natalie Cole
6. Rod Stewart, when I playing with him, although he was being a bit
sarcastic, and I wanted to smack him.
7. Vassar Clements (my adopted grandpa and fiddler/jazz violinist god)

There have been more, but I'm really exhausted and can't think. Lee, could
you retrieve my brain from underneath the sofa? I'm still missing a lot of
body parts that I may need for tonight's show...like fingers and hands and
a neck...you know, violin parts.

Oh, the other thing I was going to say was that I have decided to add as my
extra tap routine for the DTI National Dance Championships in
July....."Four Sticks". Great stuff for tapping. Can you imagine, Tony
Bennett's "Steppin' Out", followed by "Four Sticks"?

It'll win, for sure, because nobody's ever thought to do it and I've got a
killer routine.

Yeah, I remember that they put out a hard rock album not too long ago whose
name escapes me at the moment, because they really like to try new
things.....wait, I'll think of it.....oh yes, it was "Lounge-a-Palooza, a

Exactly. Steve does the same thing, only in a different way. After all, he
was hangin' with Frank Sinatra.

I think Robert will think it's a gas. Wish me luck. I won first place and
the gold medal at the Footloose International Dance Championships this past

That's him, as in Steve and Eydie. I laughed my butt off at him in his

I can't figure out why Rod has this attitude about Robert. I just don't
like to hear artists who in the press say that they are "mates" turn around

I'm sorry because I've lost the post on who asked, but somebody asked me if
I ask all the people I play with whether or not they are Zeppelin and
Page/Plant fans.

We usually have a good deal of times between soundchecks, eating dinner,
having food fights (I still owe Robert a bop in the head with a dinner
roll) and the shows, so some really conversations get started. I'm always
interested in who different artists listen to, are influenced by and like.
We talk about everything from classical to jazz to rock to cajun, etc.
And in turn, I seem to always get asked what it was like to do the album,
the video and tour with them.
B.B. King and I had a very long conversation about blues and Robert and
Jimmy, and then we jammed a bit. One of my favorite memories.

Robert and Jimmy *always* seem to come up in the conversations. Musicians
listen to many different genres. One thing I'm finding lately is that
nobody likes the new Cher album. I haven't listened to it personally.
Just can't bring myself to do it. Blech! :-P

I have a LG Phenom mini-lap top that I have with me at all times. You can
never tell where I'm posting from.... I've been known to hook up in my
dressing room. One time, when I was out with Natalie Cole, she came in and
saw that I was posting to the Jazz-L mailing list, and insisted we get them
in a jazz chatroom and she got on my computer and started jabbering with
all of them. I had tears rolling down my face.

Same here. I like to watch the old re-runs of their shows. I finally let
someone talk me into listening to her single last night. I still didn't
care for it, but I hear it's getting a lot of play in the dance clubs.

He is one of the coolest cats ever. I loved learning blues licks from him
and how to take one single note and turn it into an entire story. Amazing
man. He does like Eric C., though.

But.....he thinks highly of Robert and Jimmy....a lot more than Eric C.

He's a big Ledhead.

Geez, I know you guys probably think I make this stuff up, but I wound up
playing a tour with Pat Boone 2 years ago. It was supposed to be the
"Rosemary Clooney Christmas" show, but she got ill 2 weeks before we were
scheduled to go. Rosemary's son, Gabriel is married to...are you
ready....Debbie Boone, Pat's daughter. Debbie and her young twin daughters
were part of the show. The girls did this tune called "Sisters" that
Rosemary had done in the movie "White Christmas". Anyway, since Rosemary
was too ill, Pat Boone stepped in and did the show. None of us were
looking forward to it, to say the least. He turned out to be a pretty
decent guy, I guess, and yes, he's a Zep fan.

However, I can *not* picture Pat and Robert meeting up. Can you just
imagine the conversation? ROTFLMAO!

Anyway, to make this even longer, the finale of the show was the tune
"White Christmas", and I had this beautiful solo that finished the last 3
minutes of the tune, at which point snow was supposed to fall from a net
above the stage, feigning a white christmas.

Well, in Atlanta, apparantly the stage crew forgot their Wheaties that
morning and when it came time for the snow to fall, it didn't fall in
lovely white flakes....the net broke, and it dumped all at once....right on
me.....6 ft high. The only thing that was sticking out of the pile of fake
snow was the tip of my bow. I really thought I was going to smother. The
drummer jumped up and dug me out of the pile, while the audience was
screaming with laughter (they thought it was planned), and everyone on
stage was howling.

God, the things you remember when you start talking about famous Led Zep
fans. :-)

Oh Lord, John Tesh is trying to be like Yanni. My friend, Karen Briggs, is

Yeah, it was, because the fake snow was made of this soapy
material....blech and double blech!

There might be, but not on your life, Christie Reimer! Nobody will *ever*
see this. It'd turn up on "America's Funniest Home Videos". :-)

Yeah, there are a few. It's just that I started touring the minute I hit
college and I'm 28 now. Some of the tours are only a few weeks, then there
are those that can go for 12-14 months sometimes.

This could be possible. I'd sure love to be there to listen to it.

LOL! No, there was no repeat performance, but after that, I always looked
up to see the 2 guys holding the net waving at me. EEEK!!!! It took 3 days
to get the *snow* out of my hair, plus it had gotten in my violin, and I
was...how shall we say...a little PMS-l for a couple of days. :-) I must
say, though, they paid to have the luthier clean it out....the violin, that
is.
