Howdy ...
Well, everytime I feel in need of some inspiration, I put on the Led
Zeppelin video: The Song Remains The Same ... and every time my jaw
just drops totally to the floor and I begin laughing out loud. Well,
today was no different and I was almost rolling around on the floor in
stitches ... yet again!

How does Page play that damn Les Paul SO BLOODY LOW DOWN?
I made up a strap once that had one of my LPs bumping into my kneecaps
as Page demonstrates in several places in the movie and I couldn't
play for shit (especially using pick and fingers as in SIBLY) and then
I started getting hand cramps. His double pull-offs and runs up and
down the fretboard look uncomfortable but sound fine BUTwhat is more
remarkable is the fact that he looks decidedly half-cut in more than a
few places during the performances (I don't know when his substance
abuse problems started.) So, all in all, I find his playing in the
film totally inspirational ... but also very depressing at the same
time. (I should add that when I first showed my nephew the movie he
was, like me, was immediately blown away and was convinced that JP
must have monkey-length arms.) Anyway, I suppose the interesting thing
is that Page has finally rejoined the human race again and now plays
his guitars quite high up. A recent edition of Guitar World had him
almost doing a George Harrison ... but not quite, thank god.

Well, I'm off to buy a violin bow now ... nah, only kidding ... I've
already got one, naturally.

That's what made him a guitar god......it's impossible..it's
impossible......to play that damn thing for 3-4 hours without getting
tired....goodness, you've gotta go into autogear...

hahhaha..that's exactly what one of my friends said when I was talking to
him about the film....he has got to be the guitarist with the longest
guitar strap ever......

I have always wondered that same thing, catfood! I'm not a guitarist,
so I couldn't look at it with any knowledge or experience, but his
playing in the Zep days was amazing to see. I never tire of watching
him. I found your comments about trying to duplicate his style
interesting to hear. His playing, and his style, is just about
uncopiable.

I guess that's just one of the things that makes Page, Page!

true. One thing to look at is his upper arm/forearm lengths. One facet of his
style is that he strums mostly with his wrist, rather than the whole forearm,
so for strumming he would want a low riding guitar. Again if his arms are long,
which they appear to be, he could easily hold the guitar lower than others
could.

> His playing, and his style, is just about

This I disagree on. His style of playing is actually quite easy to cop, what's
very hard is the tone he gets and what he does with that style...

I don't bother trying to copy him. I've got my own style so when I play Jimmy
or Rory or Jimi or whoever, it sounds like me playing it rather than a clone of
these artists. And that is as it should be, IMHO. A lot of people try for years
to sounds "just like Jimmy Page". If I wanted that, I'll listen to Jimmy. When
I want to play his music, I want to hear my interpretation of it...

How tall are you? Height can affect the things that a person does. I'm
5'4" and I did NOT have to look up that much when it came to Jimmy. He
gives the illusion of height but he isn't that tall. I had an aunt who
was 5'2". She was able to do a dance where she was very low to the
ground. When I tried to do it I fell flat on my rumperdinkel. Why?
Because I was 2 inches taller. If you're fairly tall you're not going to
do things a shorter person can do. It's called the law of gravity. Cid

I agree totally......the man is not only a guitar god, but at weekends (or
when there is a full moon) he must surely turn into an ape.......... How
else can you explain such long arms!!!! My problem when trying to
rip-off......err......"copy" Jimmy's style, my guitar strap comes of the
horn at the back!!!! I swear, one day I am not gonna catch that guitar
as it plummets floorwards....and boy, will I be angry!!!!! I'm gonna buy a
new strap. Guitarists out there, are there any suggestions on what sort to
buy to prevent my guitar from behaving as if it should be wearing a
parachute......?

LOL!
As far as the 3 octave screech, that can be utilised in most rock-n-roll
genres, so, although it is painful, art comes first, eh?

I have the problem with acoustic guitars of my bust getting in the way, or
getting squished and battered, unless I stand up, and I'm too lazy. I never
could play cool. In my days in a band, I played a Fender Jazz bass, ½ my size
and ¼ my weight. I tried to play it low, but, it was too heavy for me and one
night I actually lost my balance and tumbled. Total dork. I think that
contributed to me being fired from that band. Well, I was pretty awful, too. I
was watching Sheryl Crow play her Jazz bass and sing, and she looked so
amazing, I was filled with awe. She's everything I had aspired to be, but, I'm
a clutz, not tall, not cool. <sobbing>

I admire Elvis Costello for playing the guitar in a position that may not be as
sexy, but, sure is more ergonomically correct. Long live the nerds.

I just use a length of car seat belt strap cut to length. Its as cheap
as anything, only about $1.5/meter, but only comes in black. But, its
incredibly comfortable to wear and comes in any ;length you choose to
cut it to. LOL. Its also the strongest strap you'll ever likely to
find (or need) as its designed to stop people flying through the air
.. so your axe should be safe.

Jimmy Page managed to keep his guitar so low strung without it falling off. I
mean, he must have got a really expensive guitar strap or something..!!?

I don't think I need to add my two cents ( two cents he never gave me )
concerning Jimmy's lack of generousity. It's already an established
fact. Besides, some of the incidents were a bit painful. They don't need
a public airing. Let's just say I knew him and was involved w/ him for
almost 4 years and not once did he ever take me out to dinner ---not
even to MacDonald's You know that song "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" I
never needed to do that because he never took me anywhere I needed to
save my legsand get dressed up for. And heavenforbid he would have
bought me anything to wear --dressy or otherwise..Oh, I can mention this
one. He used to smoke Kools because no one else did so then no one would
bum smokes from him. .

Now *that* is dedicated cheapness. I am in awe.

Re: straps, you just either need to use a thing called a "strap-lock",
which keeps the strap on unless you push a button in the middle to release
it, or do what I used to do and put a washer on the strap button so that
the strap can't come off ever. (Even if you want it too...!) You have to
unscrew the button to get it off.

No way can I play at all with a guitar that low.

That's screwed up because he gave Pamela D. gifts which she discussed in
her books: ring of turquoise, books, clothes, dinners, date to see Elvis, etc.
Lori also stated that he gave her gifts (that they actually would trade gifts).
I think the "Jimmy Page as miser" theory is blown *out of proportion*, really.
There's a difference between wanting to get the most bang for your buck or get a good deal
on something you're purchasing, and being selfish and stingy. I never ever got a vibe
that Jimmy was less than generous with his family, friends and lovers. He's probably
a typical Capricorn who is frugal, but will spend it when necessary.

The only time I can think of Jimmy being *considered* a little stingy was when he
reportedly asked the "broke Plant and Bonham" to help pay for sandwiches after their
first gig or something. Well, fuck, Jimmy paid for the studio time, paid for the entire
Zeppelin album, artwork, put Plant *and* Bonham on wages (all from the Yardbirds and session
money he had saved). Big deal that he asked for the whole group to split the costs of
sandwiches.

Many people don't know that Bonham and Plant were on wages in the beginning of Zeppelin.
Who do you think footed the bill for that early money? Jimmy, Jonesy and Peter!

Anyway, my point is that Jimmy's frugality doesn't strike me a stingyness. And the women
I've seen who've written about him (except you Cid) have said they treated them like
queens, so I don't know.

Theolyn

"The early chords are in the bag..."

LMAO, I'm learning, Cid. Those were the tight times, though, weren't
they? Oh, while I'm at it, I'm glad to hear that your parents were a
love match. I've heard it said deep grief only begins to mend after two
years. What you said in the post was a question I had in my missing,
undeliverable messages. And as hard as I've tried, it looks as if I'll
have to hear about the chat afterwards. I got the Instant Messenger and
was going to get AOl, but you had to have a stinkin' credit card. I hate
those things, so I've never gotten one. I'll see what I can do until
it's too late. Ha, my cats do a duet for the turkey.

There were NEVER "tight" times for Jimmy, not when I was involved w/
him; not "tight" as far as himself. I suppose one of the things I resent
is he let me assume he was a struggling musician ---he wasn' t when I
knew him.I think there is another part of me that pities him. I'm not
rich by any long or short shot but I love togive. It's a rush of joy to
the soul and sorry, Jimmy, but you're missing out. Cid
