R-

Tull is boring, yes but with at least a sense of humor.

Renaissance takes themselves seriously, have no humor and are tedious
ratfaced gits.

It would only make too much sense that you would like them considering
your tedious, self important lists you little rat faced git.

Crock of shit, just like the rest of the entire "classic rock 'n roll"
music scene.

Saw them recently in a relatively small club. Nice new band, tight
songs. I bought the live CD/DVD .
Very good bassist. other band members great as well. 5 singers total.

I saw Renaissance 2 autumns ago and I agree with the guy above; they
were pretty boring to see. No energy and they tried to play their
material note-for-note from the albums. I also think that subtracting
an orchestra/string section from them really diminishes their sound in
a live setting.

They're also about 70 years old.

Renaissance fandom is a matter of nostalgia. Same as with Yes or any
similar band. It was a different time then.

I don't know...I read this and the first thing that comes to mind is
Benoit David would do well to learn some of Haslam's moves.

I saw Renaissance on the 2010 tour w Steve Hackett and they kicked
ass. The band was much younger than Annie and that partner guy of hers
that plays the acoustic guitar. They had Tom Brislin on keyboards. It
was all very well done, without any concessions whatsoever to age.
Annie's voice was pristine. If you don't like the music, then you
don't like the music and that's probably not gonna change. I will
admit to being rather non plussed with things I'd heard on the radio
over the years, but seeing them up close and personal made a much
deeper impression on me. Annie is a force to be reckoned with in her
own right....and they have some very good music to pull from.

The times were also different, and for this type of music there wasn't
the expectation of fire breathing or choreography. Yes didn't move
around much in those days either although there was the fog and lights
and some interesting imagery.

If you watch the 1977 BBC series om youtube you'll see it is pretty
similar, not much movement. In a way it is more concert music than
showstage music. You can get lost in the songs if they are as tight as
they were then (which to me doesn't seem to be the case).

I agree with you a bit about the orchestra. Changes in union rules
meant that they couldn't tour with the string section (after a certain
year, not sure when that was, 1977 or so?). It may have been a bit down
hill from that point on.

Still the charm is in the songwriting and the composition, not the show.

OK that's good to hear... I've never had the privilege and have only
seen what's on youtube (past and present). I would very much like to
see them but the tour was short and didn't coincide with when I was in
the US (2011 was Sep to Nov or something).

For me though that 1977 stuff is the pinnacle.
