Jason James
lead-guitar player to date?
His wide range of abilities include his long jamming efforts that often
exceeded 15 minutes. In one effort in London (I think) he finished a
lengthened version of Stairway to heaven with a camera close-up revealing
the lather of sweat dripping from his face. The guy is bloody incredible. I
first heard his playing when a family member gave me LZ-3 for my
birthday,..now all these years later, I still never fail to be blown away by
his efforts.
Explaining his talent to youngsters of today, is a task I find both
rewarding and frustrating. As the technicalities of brilliant performances
like his, are lost on many youngsters who think "Lady Ga Ga" is the duck's
guts.....

I know of folks who swear by Van Halen as "the" lead guitar player. I have
tried listening to him in an unbiased way,..but I can't hear the creativity
that greater players can invoke seamlessly into the score.
Some groups dont do that well live,..but LZ transform into a greater form,
in fact the studio versions can sound almost mechanical by comparison.

Blackmore is one of those GGs that wins by the sound of his playing rather

many "departures", other great players like Steve Morse have taken his
place, played much better,..but lack that essential quality. I think there
comes a point where we are hooked on the whole picture, rather than the
individual components.

classical composers have come from all habitats :-), and while it could be
argued that African americans have shown the way with blues, it's more a
function of *why* they are so great at that particular genre.

Are yes,..must admit I had to do *another* quick google to remind me of his
playing (more an indictment on my music library, or lack of it), and "The
Man can Play".
To get a full appreciation, one needs to hear many of a musician's work. My
father, who listened exclusively to the Classics, once described that
listening to the whole piece, was like embarking on a journey where the
composer took you from A to B all the while painting an image in your mind
as the journey progressed,..in fact most classical pieces on vinyl came with
the composer's story on what he was depicting on the rear of the album's
cover.
With JP,..especially his mid-song jams, he also does exactly that, which my
father was talking about. It's a journey, not a single dimensional theme.

Well, we have to disagree on that. I think because we use a number of
faculties when we assess one player against another,..by definition, we
leave a bit of our own personality with those choices.

Well, Hendrix be The Man! eh Then again, he does have a slight
advantage over E.C. - he's dead!ehe In terms of pop culture musicians,
far and few come close to Hendrix. Most are vocalists, ala Lennon.

With the exception of John Fogerty, E.C. was only one of a few lead
guitarists to go above and beyond. You never heard 10 minute
improvisational leads until Cream came onto the scene. In terms of
lead work, I am sticking with E.C. In terms of post-60s Guitar Gods,
no one comes close to EVH. Satriani came close, but no Clinton Cigar!
eh P.S. If you have yet to, check out "Behind The Sun" & "August!"
E.C.'s foray into '80s pop! eh While it's no Cream, it still remains
two of my favorite E.C. albums.

you seem to be forgetting: all groups do not comprise 1/4 of 1% of the
World's population. All groups are not universally acknowledged as the
