List the original songs as well.

I Can't Quit You Baby and You Shook Me were properly credited as
Willie Dixon covers, so they don't count. Also We're Gonna Groove is a
live cover of Ben E King and James Bethea. And it was properly
credited to them. So doesn't count. Also the two live Eddie Cochran
covers Something Else and Cmon Everybody were always considered covers
and properly credited to Eddie.

So excluding these 5 songs that Led Zeppelin performed or recorded,
what else is a complete rip off? Please provide proper evidence.
Youtube links to original songs may suffice. The haters have the best
chance here.

I do NOT consider borrowed lyrics as stealing. Many blues artists have
constantly done that. Tell me, if they stole the entire instrumental
section from a song.

So far my list has none!

PS: I did listen to Taurus by Spirit. Its a good short instrumental
song and some of it sounds a bit like some of the music on Stairway to
Heaven. But Taurus is such a short song. And Stairway To Heaven is
much longer and has so many different parts to it. So there is no way
one can say that Stairway To Heaven is a complete rip off of Taurus

This is Taurus by Spirit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogTFdlbup24

This is Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9TGj2jrJk8

Basically if you listen from 0.45 to 2:37, you will notice that the
acoustic guitar riff is similar to Jimmy Page's intro on acoustic
guitar on Stairway To Heaven (from 0.00 to 2:15). But thats where the
similarity ends. Spirit's riff is milder and repetitive, Jimmy expands
on that acoustic intro and it is much longer and bombastic. Also there
is no accompanying recorder (played by John Paul Jones) on Taurus. So
the feel is different.

So I guess we can exclude Stairway to Heaven as well. Only partially
stolen (about a minute of it) and only serves as an intro which is not
the crux of the song. There is a lot more to the song than the
acoustic intro, after all.

Most bands "lifted" either consciously or unconsciously other's stuff,
which in turn was probably lifted from someone else. Some even lifted
from themselves.

So what you are saying is Zeppelin was a fraud. I Can't Quit You Baby
and You Shook Me are two of my favorite songs, regardless of who
originally wrote them.

That's nice. Those artists were not wealthy in their own time and
didn't have access to high-cost attorneys and major record labels who
could tell them that copping songs without proper attribution is WRONG
according to the law. Unlike LZ, particularly Page who worked as a
session guy constantly before he joined The Yardbirds and should have
known better. DID know better.

Which makes you a moron. Led Zep was repeatedly and successfully sued for
stealing music from other artists, so your childish attempt to slide around
that by changing definitions is meaningless. Led Zep was a great band, but
they repeatedly took music written by other musicians and claimed it as
their own work, and they got caught, and when they were sued they settled
rather than fight it out and lose in court. Only a hopeless fanboi would
deny the historical reality of all this, someone whose infantile ego is
threatened by admitting that his favorite band did something unscrupulous.
Maybe if you had a sex life you wouldn't have to substitute worshipping Led
Zep for getting laid, but that's probably not going to change in the near
future.

I've never been too impressed by the similarity between Taurus and
Stairway to Heaven. Mainly because using a descending figure is such
a common tool in music. And as you say, there are a lot more parts in
Stairway than just this one riff.

Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands and I think they're
fantastic. I do think it's pretty obvious that they blatantly stole
songs though. I've heard them try to justify it, and I guess it's a
personal question as to what you think of the morality of it all.

Yes but stealing lyrics (partially) is not really a big deal. But if
you are actually completely ripping off the music like what Vanilla
Ice did, then it is really bad.

Is that Zeppelin's fault? At least most of them became popular once
again, courtesy Zeppelin bringing back their old school music.

Exactly, they were a great band, one of the greatest IMO, and I still enjoy
their music just as I did when it was first released. But it is childish
folly to pretend that they didn't put their names on music written by other
people--it's a matter of record. They wouldn't have settled out of court
when they were repeatedly sued over this if the accusations of theft weren't
justified. A lot of this seems to be driven by Jimmy Page's ego (and
greed). He certainly knew what he was doing at the time, and he continues
to offer feeble excuses for it today. But then Page is a guy who overdubs
his guitar parts when old LZ material is released to cover up the sloppy
playing he was known for--talk about insecurity.

'Black Mountain Side' on LZ1 is a sloppy rehash of Bert Jansch's
arrangement of the traditional song 'Black Water Side', which he
recorded on his 1966 album, 'Jack Orion'.

I found this quite interesting too.

I don't think he did that. If you're referring to the "How the West
Was Won" set, what he did do is fly in bits from other performances
from that time. I don't believe there were any modern overdubs.

Please go on and explain why they are on the greatest when you have
respect for any one of them. You think Page is sloppy, Plant stole
lyrics., Page stole riffs. Plant's voice sucks, John Paul Jones is
boring and Bonham is not a great drummer.

Give me one reason you think they are among the greatest especially
since you hate them.

This is the same childish fanboi crap you have resorted to in the past, and
it makes you sound just as stupid (and dishonest) now as it did before.

See if you can figure this out. Many hardcore Who fans will tell you they
have always been a little disappointed by the band's predictable setlists,
where they vary only a handful of songs over the course of a tour. In other
words they will criticize something about a band whose music they love. Now
here's the part that will probably overheat your brain--criticizing
something you don't like about a band does not mean you "hate them"!

See how that works? It's possible to love Led Zep's music while still
acknowledging they were known to put their names on other people's songs.
It is not a love-em-or-hate-em situation--this is music, not religion.
Aside from that you have once again fabricated statements I have never made,
unless of course you can quote me saying JPJ is a boring bassist or Bonzo
was not a great drummer. Can you do that? No? Then shut up.

Enjoying Led Zep doesn't require acting like a brainwashed cult member who
wets his pants if he hears criticism of his fave band. Until you figure
that out you will remain a source of amusement to anyone who sees your
infantile rants. Of course it's possible you actually like being perceived
that way since you encourage it with your foolish posts.

Given that I just described them as one of the greatest rock bands ever
you're either a fool or a liar, most likely both. In any event I was
listening to Led Zeppelin long before your parents made the regrettable

Raja, I've been in touch with Page, Plant and Jones. They've ordered
you to never listen to their music again. You are banned from it. You
are persona non-grata. They want you to listen to something more your
own speed- Donny and Marie, The Osmond Brothers or Donnie solo. If not
that, they want you to come up with even more ways to get your mother

To be fair, Page came up with some original riffs like "Good Times,
Bad Times", "Out on the Tiles", "Kashmir". Also John Paul Jones is
credited with the famous riff in "Black Dog". Even if you filter out
all the obvious rip-offs, their body of original work is very
impressive.

Hadn't known about this before..but bugger me, it is a bit bloody

Thinking about it...I must have had er..sensual thoughts about Marie
Osmond myself at some point..we've had a few moments in my mind:

Doorbell goes...It's Marie Osmond in a nightie..he nipples all hard
cause she's a bit cold..I invite her in..we warm up by the fire....she
starts telling me she really fancies me and has done for ages and she
really wants me....and things go on from there...

Doorbell goes...It's Pamela Anderson...she comes in greets Marie....

Doorbell goes...Beyonce Knowles...

You're BOTH crazy. First, for cross-posting the HELL out of htis argument,
but second, the SPIRIT riff is a downward run, while LED ZEP's is upward.
Each triplet in the spirit riff starts high and ends low. To get to where
the Led Zep riff is, you'd have to play it backwards. And friend, that
ain't plaigerism!

Page has said they might have gotten away with the plagiarism if Plant
had bothered to change the lyrics. I think it's kind of funny the way
he blames Plant - probably a little tongue in cheek there.

A lot of Page's sloppiness that he's known for is probably due to his
heroin and alcohol use. It was a very big party and drug culture back
in the 70s. I have to respect any guitarist who can get himself
recognized as the foremost member of a band over the lead singer.
Supposedly Peter Grant worked a lot of publicity on his behalf. I
think he deserved it though.

Thats quite relevant. When you use a word like "steal" it is a major
accusation and insult to the artist. If you are saying Zeppelin stole
all their popular songs from some old black artists, then you are
pretty much saying the band had artistic credibility at all, and in
fact were hacks with no creativity.

Clueless, once more. At least on this song Zep gave Johnson a co-
writing credit, never mind that Johnson wrote the whole song himself.

Zep did a different *arrangement*. Not worthy of claiming co-
authorship of the song, as they did.

When you use a word like "steal" to describe theft, it's pretty damned
accurate.

Zep didn't steal *all* their popular songs from old blues artists,
they just stole a lot of them.

Their mistake was not giving credit where credit was due. And if they
lost some artistic credibility because of that mistake, it's their own
fault.

They weren't "hacks", obviously. But they behaved unethically in this
matter, period.

YOU just can't handle that thought, you're jumping through all sorts

"Borrow a little"? He took Jansch's highly original guitar
accompaniment, tarted it up a bit and then called it his own with no
credit to the source, conveniently avoiding having to pay him a share of
the proceeds.

LOfriggingL.

To be fair, Robert Johnson probably didn't write it either. Zeppelin
used Johnson and other old blues players as examples of how musicians
used to utilize others' material in crafting their own songs. They
rationalized their plagiarism by saying that they were just following
the tradition of other blues musicians in the past.
I read "Hammer of the Gods" (which isn't supposed to be particularly
accurate) and it says that at one point they hired some new publicity
agents, and one of the ideas they came up with was for them to play
some benefits for old blues musicians. This was supposed to cut some
of the criticism they were taking for lifting the old material.

I honestly don't know where I stand on the whole ethical question
involved. The idea of "intellectual property" to me is in large part
an invention of modern society. When you get right down to it, I'm
not sure that anyone should OWN music, although yeah there is money to
be made. You know as well as I do how easy it would be to "steal" a
bit of a song without intending to - My Sweet Lord and He's So Fine
being a prime example. There are only so many notes available in
Western music, and there are even less that work well together.

But while all bluesmen performed and recorded songs they had heard others
perform they generally didn't pretend to have created them--Willie Dixon
being an exception in that he was smart enough to write it down (perhaps for
the first time) and get his name on it. LZ did something quite different,
they took songs already credited to other songwriters and claimed them as
their work. There is no way an experienced session player like Page didn't
know exactly what he was doing, he knew the money was in songwriting
royalties and publishing.

They were supposed to finance some delta blues museum/foundation too--never
happened (what a surprise). Someone who actually has helped old blues
musicians get paid what they are owed was Willie Dixon and his daughter.

Willie Dixon's Daughter Makes Sure Legacy Lives On
Pop music: She guides Blues Heaven Foundation, which helps artists recover
their royalties and rights. Tuesday's benefit will be at B.B. King's Blues
Club.
October 08, 1994|STEVE HOCHMAN, SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
When Shirley Dixon was 13, a friend played her an album by Led Zeppelin, and
something struck the girl as odd. Thinking the song "Whole Lotta Love"
sounded familiar, she borrowed the album, took it home and played it for her
father, blues songwriter-producer Willie Dixon, who confirmed her suspicion.

It was, in places, virtually identical to his song "You Need Love." And he
wasn't being paid royalties for it.

"It was around Christmas time, and I said, 'Dad, I think I have a present
for you,' " she recalls.

Today, as acting executive director of the Blues Heaven Foundation, she
helps other blues artists recover or preserve their royalties and rights.
The organization was established in 1979 by her father, who died in 1992,
and boosted in 1987 with money from an out-of-court settlement in the
Zeppelin case. But, looking back, Shirley Dixon realizes that her father had
been training her for this mission from her early childhood days.

"By the time I was 8 I had filled in many copyright forms and typed his
lyrics out and mailed contracts," says Dixon, 31, sitting in the busy
Glendale home that doubles as the foundation's headquarters. "I had no idea
what he was preparing me for, which is this."

The nonprofit organization is hosting a benefit concert Tuesday at B.B.
King's Blues Club on Universal City's CityWalk to help fund its efforts to
assist blues artists and to refurbish the historic Chess Studios in Chicago
as a blues education center. Among those scheduled to perform are John Lee
Hooker (with Ry Cooder), Branford Marsalis, Ruth Brown, Koko Taylor, George
Thorogood, Pops Staples and the Pointer Sisters.

As chief songwriter and producer at Chess in the '50s and '60s, Dixon was a
seminal figure in modern blues, creating such classics as "Hoochie Coochie
Man," "Wang Dang Doodle" and "Little Red Rooster" for artists including
Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.

And notwithstanding the battle with Led Zeppelin, Dixon was an enthusiastic
mentor for young rockers who sought him out. Among them: the Rolling Stones
and Eric Clapton, who includes three Dixon songs on his new blues album,
"From the Cradle."

"Every white kid who ever picked up a guitar has probably sung a Willie
Dixon song," says Elton John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, who became a
close friend of Dixon's in the last year of the bluesman's life and is
executive producer of the benefit.

Adds Taupin, "He suffered heavily (from not being compensated), and I think
it's a great credit to him that he wanted to make sure it didn't happen to
other people."

Shirley Dixon stresses that Blues Heaven is not just for older musicians who
were taken advantage of when the music business was less sophisticated.

"Sure it's 1994, but nothing has changed," she says. "Generally young
artists have more options or have learned by others' experience. But it
depends on how hungry they are. Sometimes they'll sign a contract regardless
of what they know, and they need to be made aware that there are options."

If it's original, it's not stolen...

Okay you win, Raja, they only stole lyrics, melodies, chord
progressions, ideas and riffs, not full songs beginning to end.

Forget the lyrics.... Page has admitted than he had asked Plant to
change the lyrics in some of the song. But Plant didnt do it. And they
were careless about it

>melodies, chord

Tell me one song in which they stole chord progression and riffs for
the entire song. Stairway to Heaven had been debunked by me and some
other poster.

Don't throw in vague terms like ideas. The Beatles got the idea for
songs for Sgt Pepper and stuff like Revolution 9 after listen to stuff
on The Piper At the Gates of Dawn. And there is no harm in borrowing
ideas.

I have heard Anne Bredon's version. I disagre about the the melody.
The original sounds nothing like Zep's version. Lyrics is something we
are not discussing here. It is a well known fact that Page asked Plant
to change the lyrics and he was careless enough not to do that.
