Kraftwerk Covers, Clones, and Tributes *''KARL & WOLFGANG: former
members solo projects

*''YAMO "Time Pie"

*''1997, Cleopatra records

*''Wolfgang Flür has released his first solo album "Time Pie" by YAMO.
Its musical style has definitely evoluated to modern music, which is
less "electronic" and minimalist and more melodic ambient techno with
complex rythms. The compositions are very interesting and beautiful.
This successful debut album shows the real talent of Wolfgang Flür.

rating: ***** *''ELEKTRIC MUSIC "Esperanto"

Karl Bartos has released a solo album "Esperanto" in 1993, in
collaboration with Andy McCluskey from OMD and with Emil Schult. The
project was signed "ELEKTRIC MUSIC". To my personal opinion this album
lacks of originality, it just sounds like Kraftwerk mixed by OMD.

rating: **

*''TRANCEWERK EXPRESS "vol I & II"

*''This a tribute to Kraftwerk from some rather unknown techno
musicians. The original songs are turned to classic techno with simple
rythms, many acid TB-303 sounds and also vocoded voices. Interesting
interpretations, some of these covers are even very good but in my
opinion the whole potential wasn't expored.

rating: *** *''BALANESCU QUARTET "Possessed"

official home page

*''This string quartet performs five of Kraftwerk songs in very
interesting way and still close to original tunes. Imagine violins
make the sounds of cars on "Autobahn"...

rating: **** *''TERRE THAEMLITZ "Die Roboter Rubato"

This album features only piano interpretations of Kraftwerk songs. In
fact it's more a new "avant-garde" music album inspired by Kraftwerk
rather than simple covers of their songs. Sounds strange and
completely different from the original, but still some interpretations
are amazing!

rating: *** *''MUSIQUE NON STOP - A Tribute to Kraftwerk

1998 TOSHIBA / EMI (TOCT 10455) *''A rather funny japanese tribute.
Some songs sound totally different and really surprising. Good ideas
inside, but the production is quite poor and that's a bit
disappointing. Click for a preview...

rating: ** *''TRANS SLOVENIA EXPRESS

*''A tribute compilation by Slovenian artists, leaded by Laibach.
There seem to be completely different interpretations of the original
songs. I haven't heard it personally, so no rating here.

*''KRAFTY MOVE *''ENERGY REKORDS (ERCD111)

*''As far as I know this is a 2CD tribute to Kraftwerk by various
electronic artists such as Apoptygma Berzerk. Must be interesting
although I've heard people say it was a bit disappointing.

*''OMD "Sugar Tax"

*''Features a cover of "Neon Lights". Cool version in a very OMD
style. However for me it's the only good song of that album.

*''CLONES *''DOPPLEREFFEKT "Gesamtkunstwerk"

*''1999, DeeJay Gigolo Records *''This fake german band comes from
Detroit. It plays with the image of Kraftwerk making a parody of an
other kind than "Komputer" does, with some humor and direct references
to KW. Here "The Model" becomes a pornostar, a showroom dummy
(mannequin) becomes a Sex-Object and phones are cellular. The music
itself sounds very Werky, really cool listening. I made available a
sample song Plastiphila in mp3.

rating: ***** *''KRAFTWELT "Electric Dimension"

*''1996, Cleopatra/Hypnotic Records *''A band from Danemark who's name
clearly claims a devotion to Ralf & Florian. Their album "Electric
Dimension", though inspired by Kraftwerk, is a very personal work,
with nice and achieved compositions. The style is electronic of
course, but pretty ambient with light percussions and really cool
sounds. Could be compared to Orbital, FSOL or the recent Yamo album.

rating: **** *''KOMPUTER "World of Tomorrow"

*''1997, Mute Records [more infos] *''This english band is a pure
musical clone of Kraftwerk. Every song from their album is similar to
any of well known Kraftwerk songs. It could be called a parody, but
the songs itself are quite well produced and have a good feeling. I
think it's an interesting stuff for any Kraftwerk fan, yet they cannot
be really compared with "masters".

rating: ***

*''NICO DEMONTE "Man Machine"

*''1996, Genesis Project Records

*''It was Kraftwerk's masterpiece, The Man Machine (1978), that formed
the inspiration for Nico Demonte's cover of Kraftwerk's "Man Machine"
classic. Kraftwerk's "Showroom Dummies" also formed the inspiration
for Nico Demonte's "Mannequins in Alleys" singles.

*''SPACELAB

more infos *'' *''This band from Sweden seems to have produced some
songs directly inspired by Kraftwerk. Also the band's name is a title
of a Kraftwerk song. Unfortunately I haven't heard to their stuff so
no rating here.

ALBUM: Timmy Loved Judas Priest This limited edition (500 copies)
album contains a smooth cover of Neon Lights. THANKS TO: Georges van
Kriekinge. *''ARTIST: Komputer

TRACK: Oh Synthesizer This track serves as evidence for those who say
Komputer rip off Kraftwerk. Although it doesn't use any samples and
has different lyrics and slightly different rhythm and melody, it
sounds exactly like Kraftwerk's Neon Lights. The instruments sounds
are not identical to Kraftwerk's, but have obviously been deliberately
tuned to be sound similar. Although this song is nice to listen to, it
is impossible not to notice its huge similarity to Neon Lights.
Several other Komputer tracks (notably We Are Komputer and Komputer
Krash) also sound very much like Kraftwerk. This fact combined with
rumors that Komputer refuse to acknowledge any Kraftwerk influence
have given them a very bad image with many Kraftwerk fans. However,
there is reason to believe that Komputer's apparent refusal to
acknowledge their Kraftwerk influence was actually a tongue-in-cheek
joke; given how obvious it is, they were having a little fun with the
interviewer and audience by pretending to deny it. *''ARTIST:
"Kraftwerk"

performance at Tribal Gathering '97. In addition to the genuine live

Crossposting doesn't matter, my mailreader deletes double posts anyway.

> Stick around, you might learn something

Finally, a fellow follower of the Floydwerk (or is that Pinkkraft?)
movement. I like both groups and I don't agree with Nick Mason's comment
that Kraftwerk are (were) boring. But I tend to agree with the anonymous
journalist who once wrote that 'at 50 years it is of more importance to be
able to say that you are a member of KW than that you are a member of PF".

> maybe I sent this to the wrong news group, sorry

Nope, I don't follow PF NG closely because there are too many off topic
posts going on there.

Happy New year and all that shit.

Felix
