I've been into KW since about 1978 - I think a combination of listening to
TEE on my headphones and watching the luminous neon lights spinning on my
turntable in the dark got me hooked. Then the mystique. A few cool people
had heard of them but not the mainstream. I recall copying the Man Machine
image and deliberately talking up the band - asking for their records to be
played at clubs and feeling really pleased that Dj's would say 'who??'
I went to a KW convention in the mid 80's and this destroyed me. Everyone
there knew everything about the band. All the rare records I had only ever
seen advertised in Record Collector were being shown off by proud owners and
videos were being shown, people talked of what the 4 guys were up to and
there was so much information around the myth was killed off there and then.
The first internet trial set up at work for us all to have a look at saw me
bang in a KRAFTWERK search and I couldn't believe the 000's of sites and
accessibility of info. They were distant gods no longer.
I've totally gone off the point but will carry on. To me it was the mystery
as well as the music that was the obsession. I cut out every ad in 1981 for
the concert venues and releases. Now I could set my printer running for days
for stuff on the band. And back to my original point - the stuff that I
would print out over those days would be sooo repetitive. Like a stuck
record waiting for the needle to be nudged to set them on their way again.
And then there's Flur's book. On the one hand - fantastic. New material. New
info. new insight. On the other hand and outweighing this - I wish I hadn't
read it. I've been up close and personal through this work ( biased/ bitter
or whatever) and so the mystique has vanished for good. No longer do I
wonder was my friend lying that he actually saw a copy of Technopop in a
shop, that I returned to for weeks after in desperation. No more wondering
if the original 4 would reunite. No more rumours of The Mix 2 with a
possible new single to come from it ( hotly tipped as The Model I recall).
No more dreams.
So my ramblings come to an end. Maybe if nothing else they may inspire some
conversation in here!
( Oh - nearly forgot. I believe KW are touring next year to promote their
new multimedia entertainment package and being rejoined by KArl and Wolfie.
The band have been so quiet for so long as the release is DVD only
containing 13 brand new tracks, remixes of some classics and loads of
footage of the band in the KK studios. It has been completed twice over but
Ralf didn't like it so went on a long bike ride to think about how to re do
it all There is to be a single release - complete with holographic video for
which VR hardware is required. This is likely to be The Model.
I'm really looking forward to it - that's understood! I just hope I don't
wake up in a minute to find it was all a dream....................oh no I
have!!!!!!!!!
anyway, my girlfriend buyed a dvd player last week, all we need
now is a cable from the tv out to the tv set AND that kraftwerk dvd...
would be a nice completition of the kraftwerk cd´s anyway. maybe
their swansong, but that´s life.
by the way. since my dsl link arrived, i downloaded some of the
kraftwerk videos avaiable on the net. most i have need quicktime,
so i downloaded that apple player. to my surprise the videos
run properly on me pII 350 mhz (just as an avi or whatever would)
BUT the sound is stuttering like as if an (a bit of a comparison)
irq-conflict is obstructing the soundcard. that doesn´t happen with
my avis or other windows media files.
what the heck can this be, any quicktime pros about ? i mean the
videos run smooth (though of course the are blocky due to
compression) but the sound (which is a must...) is faulty.
any help very much appreciated !
thx

kraftwerk addict since 1976 - now beat this...
I DONT UNDERSTAND??? is there to be a DVD release or is that some crap
you rambled on about? this is a serious matter ;)
Well, they started in 1968-69. I was into Experimental Electronic Music even
before that- and I specifically dreamed of ROBOTS and Synthesizers making
beautiful, hypnotic MusiK- and then a friend introduced me to AUTOBAHN in
April of 1978. Pity I didn't discover KRAFTWERK sooner.
....or *did* I? It's as if I've been receiving signals from KlingKlang since
about 1971....
strange.
