the cubs are in the same shape as this NG lately, showing signs of life but
not quite out of critical condition yet. a.m.mdfmk could officially be
pronounced dead at this point, not even the spammers are going near it.

I haven't heard the new NIN single, but I have heard a couple of people slam
it as a let down. Five years or whatever since Downward Spiral and I think
anything less than creative genius will be a let down. It is only a single
though so who knows, maybe if it sucks the album will be cool. I hope he has
killed the guitar rock NIN and is heading in the vein of more experimental
stuff (i.e. Side Two of TDS, A Warm Place and on). Either way I think
everyone's in for a surprise.

You've got me thinking now. Our society can't help but be disappointed with
something new from something old (not that NIN is old or anything, but I'm sure
you know what I mean). We just expect too much, and are never happy with what
we get.
On the bright side this single has had absolutly no HYPE! Not that I've notice
anyhow. That's always pleasing to me.
I'm sure NIN won't dissapoint me with the new album, coz this will actually be
the first time I've experienced a new album from Trent, I'm willing to refresh
my interests in NIN if Trent puts out some cool shit, and I have faith that he
will.
I for one won't be dissapointed with MDFMK(the circle is complete, wasn't that
fast), I don't need faith to know that Sasha, and Tim are gonna kick some ass
with this album. If they don't catch me with it at first there's no doubt I'll
grow to love it, as i did with SYBOLS, and as most of you did with XTORT
(hopefully).
My hopes for both albums is a lot of instrumental work. Like every other song.
Does anyone feel like the release of this Single is almost surreal? like it's
not really gonna happen?

Billl

PS: To the guy who started this thread, you had some fucked up best & worst
picks (no offense, those are your opinions).
PPS: I finally found a Chris Connelly album at the store today! It's the one
with the funny name. Can't wait to tell you what I think!
PPPS: We can discuss a little NIN here can't we? oh well, got to post
something.

new nin singlew is interesting, to say the least... its pretty
neat... i heard it from mp3 turned back into cd audio, so it lost
some of the really highs and lows, but it was still pretty neat... not
sure where to find them, but ill see if i can get that info from my

ok. here's a description of the new single...

the song is called 'the day the world went away'
there are NO drums in it. it's about 4 min long, and all there is, is textured,
distorted, guitar and synth washing around in an autechre-like way. there are
8 lines of quiet, actually SUNG verse, with a strange chorus that kinda sounds
like humming (at least on my shitty mp3). during the verse, there's just
synths slowly phasing around.

THIS is what all of nin fans have been waiting for. the new single is going to
commercially flop because all the fake kiddies want to hear more of 'the
perfect drug'. well, this song as no groove to the average radio listener, and
is only appreciable by those of us who understand this kind of music. we have
arrived, neighbors

oh yeah, the B-side, starfuckers inc, is supposedly damn cool broken/supernaut
era NIN. i heard a 2khz quality sample of it or something, and it sounds sweet
just from that! i guess in the nin world, starfuckers inc is a bigger hit than
TDTWWA. my comp lost the connection while dl'ing the mp3 of it!! i'll try
again later and post a better description.

nin fans, we are in for one hell of trip

I heard that the NIN album (I don't remember I heard or read or whatever
this, so it's not too likely at being correct ... just passing it along)
is going to be a double CD set with one disc being all instrumentals.
For some reason tho, this doesn't strike me as likely ... even for NIN,
who probably try their darndest to be unlikely.

Anyway, I plan on getting the album the first day it's out ... I've
never been disappointed by a NIN album before and I don't see why it'll
happen now (same for KMFDM and maybe 2 others.)

It hasn't got enough traffic to attract the spammers yet, as they use
usenet stats to determine target groups for their drivel. It'll be the
release date of the new MDFMK album before it sees much in the way of
posting traffic.

nine inch nails has never failed to kick ass (well except for parts of the
perfect drug video - i hate those parts where he's running thru the hedges or
he's standing there with his arms up in the wind... but the outro is pretty
cool, in fact probably my favorite thing nin has ever written - i just love
that 'without you...' part. it's so perfect) and i can already tell that this
album will be more of what's good. hopefully it will garner less attention in
the media than they want, cuz then it's for all the hardcore fans, which is
what trent really wants anyway, i think

good thing i get paid the day the single comes out (july 20th) cuz i don't even
have $5 to my name right now....

oh yeah, there will not be a video for TDTWWA, but ANOTHER single is slated for
like August 10th. don't remember name, but that one WILL have a video i
guess.... and there aren't any promo cd's either, only vinyl i believe. but i
could be wrong.

he probably doens't need any more money. i read an interview where he said he
just picked up four Nord Lead's. i really don't believe the crap about trent
selling out. he just struck a nerve with the right people and nine inch nails
got popular. i really don't think he liked it as much as everyone says. now
he just has the money to make an album with good backing and he has the gear to
make it sound good. plus, he has all the money for touring he'll need.

Here in MD 99.1 Whfs plays Starfuckers inc. by Nin. I'm a pretty big fan so I
am looking forward to this release. The single is due out this tuesday (20th of
July) I have to say the starfuckers song is really heavy almost a heavy
metalish. It's an ok song, but I'm gonna buy the single, I know it's going to
be great. The Fragile is a 2 CD set due out in september. Man am i stoked. I've
waited 5 years for this! The radio station said that Trent said this was the
best work he thought he had ever done. Since it is a 2 CD set I hope there is a
great mixture of musical tastes.

No way did Trent sell out. Although I love NIN to death and I think Downward
Spiral forms the epitome of Industrial Music (along with various KMFDM songs
and Skinny Puppy's Last Rights album) the main reason for the NIN popularity
with the release of Downward Spiral is pretty much because Trent has an
amazing voice, a voice that is at once angry and sad. I don't think the
ripping sounds of En Esch or Ogre's scratching vocals would ever go over
well with a typical audience (though Rammstein's surprising popularity may
defeat this). Trent had the rythym, the emotion, and the sound to capture
people in that way that only Industrial can, however I believe if he sang
more like En Esch you would not see such a following. NIN never sold out, it
was scared away by the prospect of doing so...at least that is my reason for
the long wait for this latest NIN album...that and I truly believe that
Downward Spiral was an album built out of emotion and after that the emotion
was gone...Trent had to wait for something else to kick him back to making
music.
Personally I am prepared to hate the new NIN album and I most likely
will...at least for a few weeks until non-stop listening forces me to
realize that it is just as good as the rest but in different ways...I'm
actually waiting to see what is going to happen for a tour...I wasn't into
NIN (or industrial) back during the last tour and I keep hearing stories
about it. I'm sure it must be quite an experience no matter what is being
played, although nothing can top the KMFDM Tour '97 when I got to see En
Esch and Ogre do Godlike as the final encore...nothing will ever top that.

i'd have to disagree. i'm not convinced that nine inch nails is industrial at
all. to me, industrial is more along the lines of bands like foetus - i.e.
crap banging around for drums and pipes, hammers, etc. with the exception of
maybe a couple songs on broken, nine inch nails is just a band that happens to
use the same tools to make music that an industrial band would. the only thing
that made nine inch nails popular was the fact that he just knows how to put
all those elements together in a way that can express his emotions and still be
commerically viable. that's it. he's not industrial, and there is no way that
the radio public is ready for industrial. no one listens to it because it's
harsh and it doesn't convey a happy let's-go-cruise-down-hollywood-strip
message. most of the pop on the radio uses the same gear. shit like jamiroqui
actually uses a nord lead, just like KMFDM, NIN and probably a handful of other
bands. dance music or synth pop like ace of bass and spice girls uses
synthesizers and drum machines in probably a pretty close way that KMFDM uses
them. it's all how you write the music, and the finished product you are
aiming for. industrial has never been known for 'capturing people' as you put
it.

don't get me wrong - i have every nine inch nails album and a couple singles
and imports. i like it for the emotion in the music. last year pretty hate
machine helped me deal with a lot of problems and now i see all of his work in
a whole new light. i listen to it because i can connect with it. isn't that
what the point of listening to music is supposed to be?

Well, I certainly find it funny that Closer got censored for radio

bet that he would have sold far fewer copies of that album...

You should really get some Foetus and Coil- some of NIN's better stuff
has been heavily influenced/re-mixed/etc by them.

NIN's fun, but the epitome of industrial they ain't.

The epitome of industrial would probably be Throbbing Gristle or one of the
older bands.

that's what I really don't get, how many of the "industrial" bands are
really qualified to fit that term? Einsturzende Neubaten, COIL, who else.
That travelling show STOMP is more industrial than some of the electro crap
that gets labeled as such.

What did you hate about it? I happen to love it. It's one of the few CDs that
gets constant play in my car. It's definitely not NIN, but it's not supposed to
be. It's Kevin McMahon being Kevin McMahon. The production *quality* left a lot
to be desired, but the actual quality of the music was first-rate. For those of
you who haven't heard it, it sounded a lot like NIN's "Piggy", but with some
Die Warzau-esque jazziness. It's not for everyone (obviously) but I fucking
love it.

Well it just left me empty. The production as you stated wasn't that great(yes
I realise sometimes you go for a certain sound but to me it just wasn't right)
and I usually like Trent. I wasn't expecting another NIN cd, I was actually
expecting something more like Pig or Foetus for some reason... I didn't think
the songwriting was all that great. His voice is what aggravated me the most
though. I like british and most euro accents in singers but his voice is more
irritating than Harvey Fierstein or Mariah Carey's voices to me... I just can't
explain why it's just grating. That's why I disliked Prick... BTW whatever
happened to him and who is he? It's been 4 years now... I was just wondering
that while writing this.

His name's Kevin McMahon and he was originally in a
band called Lucky Pierre with Trent and some other guys
back in the 80's. Currently, he has finished an album's
worth of songs but for some reason, they are not
releasing it just yet. I still don't know the reasoning for
keeping his music shelved. Originally, he was supposed
to put his second album out in 1997, then it was
delayed until 1998, then indefinitely. Now it's anybody's
guess.

We make the "ultimate" decision.

You know, I thought it was at first, but after a few listens and
really giving it a decent chance, it scored high with me. I happen to

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Full Worm Garden is
awesome. Today, although Skold's voice is unquestionably suited for
the style, is far too much like Bronski Beat or Heartland pop for me
to enjoy 100%

>> >Best Vocal Performance:

>Even though she doesn't sing? Hmmm...

Spoken word is still an art form, and is no less valid than a singing
voice, per se. The delivery of the verse is right on target and
delivered with enough understated venom to make me *feel* it. That's
enough for me. When we boil all the niceties off, doesn't Sascha more
or less scream his lyrics as opposed to outright sing them anyway?
What's the difference aside from the intensity of the delivery in the
end anyway...? A scream of rage, or a rime-laden whisper, does it get
the point across in it's intended form?
