What an incredible top 10. Gets decidedly dodgy after the top 15 though (
hell, what was I supposed pick...Load? Roots? Skunkworks? Diatribes?
Undisputed Attitude?! ).
Although I`d probably call out Storm as a better album than Dusk now I can`t
get away from the fact that I played Dusk about 6 squillion times between
1996 and 1998 and it holds a very special place for me. Admittedly I tend to
pull out the half dozen albums I`ve placed below it more often nowadays but
for the mark it made on me at the time I have to give it top spot.
No-one has come close to making music like Dissection that`s as good as them
again ( including the half baked reunion they did when Nodveidt got out of
prison ). The Gallery is possibly the best melodeath album ever. Nevermore`s
first great album. Nemesis has my all time favourite black metal track.
Probably my favourite 90`s Fate album. Burzum`s black metal swan song ( only
let down by a ridiculously long ambient piece ). A stop gap EP by Cradle
which was better than anything they ever did again. Helloween started making
proper speed / power metal again. King`s solo work suffered in comparison to
Fate`s in the 90`s but was still great. Ulver`s last black metal album
before they went bonkers and Therion`s first experimental symph piece which
destroys all the copycats which followed. Quite simply a classic top 12,
really great year. Darkthrone`s Total Death is one of their lesser albums
but OK and after that it`s fairly run of the mill, average stuff but still,
1996 rocked.
1. Dusk...and Her Embrace - Cradle of Filth
2. Storm of the Light`s Bane - Dissection
3. The Gallery - Dark Tranquillity
4. The Politics of Ecstasy - Nevermore
5. Nemesis Divinia - Satyricon
6. Into the Unknown - Mercyful Fate
7. Filosofem - Burzum
8. Vempire - Cradle of Filth
9. The Time of the Oath - Helloween
10. The Graveyard - King Diamond
11. Nattens Madrigal - Ulver
12. Theli - Therion
13. Memoria Vetusta - Blut Aus Nord
14. Total Death - Darkthrone
15. The Dark Saga - Iced Earth
16. Stormblast - Dimmu Borgir
17. Louder Than Hell - Manowar
18. Morningrise - Opeth
19. The Killing Kind - Overkill
20. Starfire Burning - Bal-Sagoth
This is a great album.
Heard all these. As for Skunkworks. I actually like the album a lot.
Even though it's less metal overall than the other Bruce solo albums.
So of these, what would I put #1? Hard to say.
Tom
Probably played Skunkworks more than any of these.

I'd take Skunkworks over any of the albums listed. Who cares what genre it
is? It's Bruce.

Down the left hand highway with no sinister regrets
Into the Unknown is my AOTY without question, followed by SOTLB and
Morningrise respectively.
I may actually be a bigger fan of Politics than you; it's my third
favorite NM by some distance, behind only DNB and TGE, and ahead of
DHIADW.
Like Tom, I also quite enjoy Skunkworks. It'd likely make my top 10.

I want to see Ian's 1968 list.
By the way, I am loading up my Jimi Hendrix-Kiss the Sky CD for
tomorrow. I was listening to SRV's cover of Voodoo Child. And well, he
did good, but no one touches Hendrix's.

Hmm, since getting Skunkworks, probably a year or so after CW was
released. (I was late getting around to it, ha ha, we all laugh) I
have probably listened to it more than any other BD album since that
point in time.
Now, excepting ToS, of course. Throw out the year or so after ToS
was released, and then yeah, Skunkworks probably has more plays than
any other BD album around these places.
Tom
I will not accept the truth.
This is pretty good. I should probably up a copy. I heard this a ton
in the late 90s/early 00s
> 2. Storm of the Light`s Bane - Dissection
Stone cold classic
> 5. Nemesis Divinia - Satyricon
see #2.
> 7. Filosofem - Burzum
I've always been leery of later burzum but I definitely need this in
my life.

the best cd they put out?
> 13. Memoria Vetusta - Blut Aus Nord
Great stuff but pales to some of the stuff put out this year.
> 15. The Dark Saga - Iced Earth
kinda meh to be honest.

Morningrise isn`t on my hard drive for some reason, it didn`t come up. It
made the second list when I realised I`d missed it.

I adore it...I just adore those other 3 albums even more!

Seems most of the group like Skunkworks. I`ve never gotten on with it.
Didn`t really like any of Bruce`s solo stuff until AoB.
I didn't think much at the time, but it's grown on me over the years.
Still prefer AoB and CW though.
I'm actually not as big a fan of Opeth's first two as many of the
diehards. I think Orchid is fantastic, mind you, but Morningrise is
one of my least favorite of theirs. I consider the band's peak period
to be the following two records (MAYH and SL), with a very slight
decline for BWP and then back to par with Watershed.

There are days when PoE is my favorite NM record. I'd love to see them
return to this proggy style, and have to admit being kinda tired of
the 7-string chugging.

Skunkworks is my favorite of the pre-Smith solo records by some
distance. I don't like Tattooed Millionaire at all, and Balls to
Picasso is enjoyable but not nearly as good as this one.

I have to agree with this. I didn't like it a lot on the first
listen or two.
Tom
But dig it alot now.

I find myself in agreement. I believe Morningrise is the one that
has been not played the longest of the bunch.

It's time for a change.

Agreed again.

I didn't like TM at all, either, So much so that I never even bought
it.
As for BtP, I like about 4 songs a lot. A couple more some, and a
couple or so I always skip.
I usually don't skip any of Skunkworks. Although I will admit to
starting on song 4 a lot of times and then going back to the first 3
when finished with the rest of the album.
