Well, the 100 of the decade post sparked off a thread so I`ll post their top
25 of the year...as it stands I share 9 in my top 20 although there`s 5 I
haven`t heard. Of the 20 I have I like most to some degree, probably 5 or 6
I don`t care for much.

25. Alice in Chains - Alice in Chains (rock)
24. In the Constellation of the Black Widow - Anaal Nathrakh
(death/black/grind)
23. The Great Misdirect - Between the Buried and Me (melodeath/core)
22. Agorapocalypse - Agoraphobic Nosebleed (grind)
21. The Incident - Porcupine Tree (prog/rock)
20. All Shall Fall - Immortal (black)
19. Gin - Cobalt (black)
18. Endgame - Megadeth (thrash)
17. No Toleration for Imperfection - Man Must Die (death)
16. The Divinity of Oceans - Ahab (doom)
15. The Ichthyologist - Giant Squid (post rock)
14. Homage to Martyrs - Razor of Occam (death/thrash)
13. Foulest Semem of a Sheltered Elite - The Ruins of Beverast (black)
12. The Great Cessation - Yob (stoner/doom)
11. Microcosmos - Drudkh (black)
10. Absu - Absu (black)
09. Argus - Argus (trad/heavy)
08. Vast Oceans Lachrymose - While Heaven Wept (trad/heavy)
07. Time Waits for No Slave - Napalm Death (death/grind)
06. Ape Uprising! - Slough Feg (trad/heavy)
05. Crack the Skye - Mastodon (prog/metal)
04. Everything is Fire - Ulcerate (death)
03. Addicted - Devin Townsend Project (prog/metal)
02. Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm - The Chasm (melodeath)
01. Memoria Vetusta II - Blut Aus Nord (black)

i own 9 off the list, and only rate 2 very high. there are about 8 i
wanna check out/might, and some i have no interest in. i like the Blut
Aus Nord and Ulcerate cd's, but putting them ahead of Mastodon is a
joke. i want to hear the Devin Townsend, i think i heard a song by The
Chasm and didn't care for it if i remember correctly.

i like the AiC alot, but i will mention it in my non-metal list. i
can't possibly compare it to say Slayer or Augury etc, Metalreview can
tho :)

I don't have much off that list. I think it's 5 total.
As e. would say, I wouldn't call Porcupine Tree metal.

I was amazed to see The Chasm at 2nd spot, I gave the album another try
today but couldn`t even get to the end. It`s boring. Devin Townsend is just
not my cup of tea at all, gave this album a shot as well and switched it off
halfway through the 3rd track.

I think the Blut Aus Nord album is absolutely fantastic, it`ll be high on my
list although probably not my no.1 black metal album.

I also d/l a couple albums I`d never heard of here...Argus should please any
fan of Candlemass and The Ruins of Beverast album is brilliant...I`ll have
to give it another few listens but at this point it`s another that could
force it`s way into the top 20.

The other album I can`t believe they rate so high is Man Must Die which is
pretty generic old school death metal.

I can`t abide AiC although in fairness I haven`t heard any of this album.

No, I never understand why they get lumped into the metal scene. I`m
constantly surprised you don`t like Slough Feg, I think you`d probably like
While Heaven Wept and Argus, I`d tentaively recommend Drudkh and possibly
Ahab ( although the latter aren`t my cup of tea ). Not much else there I
think you`d like.

It`s my favourite metal review site, they review a lot and the reviews are
always well written. They did give glowing reviews to some of your favourite
albums this year, Asphyx, God Dethroned, Amorphis all got really high
scores. And I only like one of them!

I've heard 6 of these and 3 of those were on my 'disappointments' list. The
other I thought just plain sucked as expected. That leaves 2, neither of
which would make my top 25. I'd like to hear the Anaal Nathrakh as I have a
couple of their cd's. I think you said they were a buch of noise before.
That might have been live though.

Slough Feg wouldn't make your top 25?

Ape Uprising makes my top 5 this year!

Ian had mentioned them a while back so I checked them out. I hated every
second of it.

i looked up Ruins of Berevast, of course it's a pricey import, maybe in
a few months it will drop some. i noted Drudkh when you mentioned them
awhile back, might get it soon.

Well, in fairness if you`ve only heard 6 then there are probably others
there you`d enjoy. It`s why I like these sort of lists, shows me new stuff,
some of which is worthy of investigation, some not. The new Anaal Nathrakh
album is brilliant, it is a fuck of a noise to be sure but a very pleasant
one. It took me a couple of listens to get my head around it. I`ve never
seen them live. Should be seeing them supporting Marduk next month.

Ok, I'm getting a pretty long list now.

I am getting on with the idea of making a top 10 albums of the year
post.
One caveat, The Kansas Masque album, from 1975 I believe, I've
actually played it enough times to score in the top 10 plays of albums
this year. Great album. Thanks e, for insisting on it to the point I
had to buy.

Any time! As I've said repeatedly, the 70's were the greatest decade
in music, and I'm happy to make plenty more recommendations where
those came from :)

As it is, I liked Kansas back in the day, but just never bought any
albums. I heard many songs on the radio.
