Greetings,

In the latest issue of Perfect Sound Forever <https://www.furious.com/perfect/index1023.html>, you'll find (among other things):

BOB CUTLER
Interview- Amazing Tales of Midwest Punk, by Jack Partain
"Bob Cutler was at ground zero for just about everything that went down at Kansas venue The Outhouse. He attended many shows there in its early days, played there with a couple of bands, ran a soundboard for countless bands, booked shows there, and even cleaned the toilets. And he was one of only a handful of people allowed to use the hidden telephone there. Here are a small portion of his memories from those days."

DRAMARAMA
Interview- NJ Scenario For Anything, by John Wisniewski
Obvious music fans from the start, record store owner (and bassist) Chris Wood, guitarist Mark Englert, singer/songwriter John Easdale, guitarist Pete Wood and a succession of drummers would form the whip-smart indie band Dramarama, first gaining wide recognition with the powerhouse song "Anything, Anything (I'll Give You)" which not only got solid radio airplay but also wound up in one of the Nightmare On Elm Street films. A move to L.A., major label contract and guest appearance by classic rockers somewhat helped their rep but after a string of impressive albums, they broke up in 1994. VH1 series “Bands Reunited” saw the re-emergence of the group in 2003 and their first new album in 12 years, Everybody Dies."

ROBERT GORDON
Rockabilly Boogie From An Insider, Charlie Messing
"Robert asked me to try some lead stuff. He must have liked what he heard- for the rest of the rehearsals, I was the lead guitarist. This had never happened before in my life. I was certainly no virtuoso. As Robert's album sessions drew near, he told us that Link Wray, a legendary guitarist from Virginia, would be his co-star on the album. Robert knew him from long ago, since he was from Washington DC. He was quite excited about it. The rhythm section, as it turned out, would be hired guns Howie Wyeth and Rob Stoner, NYC musicians who had been in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue band."

GRAVITY KILLS
Interview- Jeff Scheel Is (Not) Guilty, by Peter Crigler
"Gravity Kills were determined to be unique and different than most other 'industrial' bands, like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Breaking out with the hit 'Guilty' (1996), the band blazed their way across the country and made not only lots of fans but quite an impression with their dynamic stage presence. When the bottom fell out of the alt rock world, the band went their separate ways in 2003. After a mid-2000’s reunion that petered out around 2010, the band have announced a hometown show."

HACKEDPICCIOTTO
Interview- Love Parade Meets Neubauten, by Richard Moule
"Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke are grateful for their friends. So much so that this experimental duo decided to pay tribute to them the only way they could: through their music. It is also the reason why the latest from this Berlin-based duo, under their moniker HackedePicciotto, is titled Keepsakes."

THE HEPTONES
How "Book of Rules" Became A Reggae Classic, Eric Doumerc
"The Heptones were a Jamaican harmony trio who rose to popularity during the rocksteady era of the mid 1960's thanks to a series of recordings for Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd's Studio One label before moving on to reggae and becoming one of the top groups in that category. The original trio was composed of Leroy Sibbles on lead vocals and Barry Llewellyn and Earl Morgan on harmony. The Heptones stayed at Studio One until 1971 and then worked with various producers like Joe Gibbs, Harry Mudie, and Harry Johnson (Harry J)."

MORGANA KING
Vintage Jazz-Folk-Pop, by Kurt Wildermuth
"How cool is it that Morgana King played Mama Corleone, wife of Don Vito, in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather II (1974)? It’s cool, all right. Few movies have achieved the cross-cultural ubiquity of those two, and involvement with them brings long-lasting cachet. If most people will remember the name Morgana King, it’s for those appearances. To some music nerds, however, it’s even cooler that King recorded a version of the Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never Knows.' "

PETER LAUGHNER
Seminal Tragic Cleveland Figure, by Michael Freerix
"Peter Laughner wrote songs about Charles Baudelaire or Sylvia Plath, or simply about how life 'stank.' Being a brilliant guitarist, he played in many bands in his hometown Cleveland, Ohio, although he was more interested in transporting New York-state-of-mind to Cleveland. Well, that did not work out. At least he could convince Tom Verlaine and his band Television to play in Cleveland."

RICHARD MASON
More Tales of a Great Obsessive Scribe, by Oleh Hodowanec
"Richard sent delightfully chatty, energetic and mirthful emails. Aside from our music discussions, I discovered that we shared a fondness for proto-Dadaist writer Alfred Jarry, and that he enjoyed writing poetry. In time, he sent me a chapbook of some of his works that I still own and hope to feature examples of it in this remembrance. I don't think I knew in our years of correspondence that he wrote for <I>PSF</I> until more recently. It wouldn't surprise me if he hadn't mentioned it or at least only vaguely mentioned it; I never knew him to be much for tooting his own horn and bragging. His cheerful humility and kindness is so very much part of my memories of our interaction."

LIZA MINNELLI - PET SHOP BOYS
A Classic, Unlikely Combo and Neil Tennant interview, by Michael Heath
"Gene Simmons (yes, as in KISS) takes it upon himself to manage the recording side of Liza's career, with the intention of scoring her a bona fide pop hit. Gene hooks Liza up with the president of Sony/Columbia, who signs her to a contract with Epic. As it happens, Tom Watkins, manager of several British pop acts, gets wind of Liza's signing, and offers the services of one of his acts - none other than Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, best known as the Pet Shop Boys."

SINEAD O'CONNOR
RIP An Irish Sacrificial Lamb, by Brian Cousins
"Sinead O’Connor's death earlier this summer at the age of 56 was equally shocking and sad. Undoubtedly a huge talent and a musical and cultural icon to so many, her passing seems to symbolize the revenge of the values of an 'Old Ireland' against those of the forward-looking 'New Ireland,' which has embraced secularism, plurality and tolerance."

READING (ABOUT) MUSIC
What Books/Articles/Content Do Musicians Find Crucial? by J. Vognsen
"What role is there for writing about music? To approach it, I reached out to musicians and composers, asking them the following: 'What are one or more examples of a text about music that was important to you? It could be a book, an article, a review, some liner notes, a private email, a piece of promotion, a comment somewhere online or any other format. What did you get from reading this particular text? What made it work? What did it facilitate or illuminate for you?"

DANE RUDHYAR
Composer's Dissonant Harmony in Practice, by Daniel Barbiero
"Once his mature style had been formed, it stayed fairly consistent. In the post-tonal, unsettled sounds of its harmonies, the late work Transmutation, a seven movement suite for piano composed in 1976, shows some similarities to the earlier work."

VINYL ANACHRONIST
A Tale of Three Record Brushes, by Marc Phillips
"I have made changes to my collection of record brushes. I have three of them now, all slightly different in purpose, all used on a regular basis. To be honest, there have been plenty of innovations in record brushes recently. If you're using the same Discwasher D3 you used in the '70's, you probably aren’t cleaning your LP's very well. In addition, you'll need different brushes for wet and dry cleaning, something you may not have considered yet."

We also have a Spotify playlist with most of the artists above here:

We're always looking for good writers and/or ideas so let us know if you have anything to share.

See you online,
Jason
