A friend of mine was digging around through her vinyl collection, and we
found a Jimi Hendrix album that I have never seen nor heard of...

The title is simply "Jimi"... no copywrite date that I could find,
released by Pickwick International, Inc (SPC-3528)... from what I can
figure, this is one of the releases that came after his death... I
listened to the first couple songs, it sounded like some loose studio
jams similar to those on "Crash Landing"... which Jimi probably never
intended to release. Very cool album art, however.

Set list:

Feel That Soul
So Called Friend
Go Go Shoes
All Alone
Voice In the Wind

From This Day On
Good Times
Good Feeling
Suspicious

My friend is interested in selling, but would first like some idea what
this album might be worth... any value to collectors? If anyone has any
info or offers, email them to me and I'll be happy to pass them on...

Thanks!

Probably not much interest to collectors -- by the track listing, it looks
like it's more of the Curtis Knight or Lonnie Youngblood stuff, which
contains very little in the way of the Hendrix you're familiar with. The
Youngblood material is, in fact, a blatant ripoff in that most of it was
found to contain absolutely NO Hendrix contributions or involvement!

The first problem with this album (from a collectors stand point)
is that it's on PickWick (the cheapest reissue label ever),
Either than the cheap quality of Pickwick, it was originally released on Trip
Records (somewhat better).
I've listened to the album a few times, mainly blues and soul related stuff.
It's not terribly exciting, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't another studio
guitarist in there. I believe in a few of the tracks you can her slight audio
blurbs from Jimi, but they aren't easy to hear.

The coolest thing about the album is the jacket. It has a picture of jimi
in a real cool get up, obviously at a live concert (something the album is not)
I have two other albums though with the exact same pictures.

The first is called Woke Up this Morning and found myself (which I've seen
with four different covers). I think this has been talked about before thoug
right handed (reversed photo or something).

The other album I have that has that picture is called Second TIme Around.
Released on Astan, a popular German releaser of pretty obscure stuff. It is
his playing though. Real apparent.

There are five songs on it...

1.) Torture me Honey (original by Jimi)
2.) Mercy Lady Day (by C. Knight)
3.) Hard Night (Ed Dantes) ?
4.) Second Time Around (Ed Dantes) ?
5.) Got To Have It (Ed Dantes) ?

Here's my review...Torture me Honey is pretty cool, got a real fine groove,
the bassist and drummer. I dig it, there's a lot of Wah in it, actually most of it is. Not quite Bluesy, Not quite way out there... plays on a cool vamp.

Mercy Lady Day- More heavy Wah (wonder if its from a concert) No vocals (from
what I can recall). It gets real far out towards the end, some real ether
over a far out groove (haven't hear Knight's version of it, so I can't tell if
it's actually the song.).
Hard Night - obviously from a little club gig. Sounds like it may have
been like an after hours jam with the records plugged through t
the sound of Jimi singing real faint (maybe it's someone recordsing from the
audience. Either pretty good guitar sound. Real hard to hear the vocals.
I'm pretty sure it's the Experience.

Second Time Around - two guitarists, sounds real odd. I couldn't even guess
who the second is. It's not overdubbed, because it sounds to live.
It's just one huge jam with whoever the second guitarist was.

Got to have it - more good wah work, real quick tune. very faint vocals
(probably him just talking). The rest of the instruments are real clear.
Done before it starts.

I guess i do see a slight differenc in the photos... the one for Second
Time Around has Jimi playing a white strat, the others have black.

Oh, well. That's enough rambling for this letter.

Peace

Play on Jimi...

Yeah, I listened to the first 3 tracks. It does not even come close to
resembling Hendrix's style in any way, shape, or form... which is the
only reason I didn't grab it myself... just thought there might be some
collector out there who absolutely has to have "everything" released
under Jimi's name... I wouldn't recommend this one for the music, to be
certain...

BTW: no offers to date.

New subject: I'd like to get some more live Hendrix. I have "Hendrix in
the West", "Rainbow Bridge", & "Jimi Plays Monterey"... used to have "The
Hendrix Concerts" too, but that was stolen :-(

Anyone want to trade tapes?

I think I still have a copy of "War Heroes" floating around somewhere.
Do you have that one? It has some good stuff on it.

Does anyone which Lonnie Youngblood stuff, if any, actually has
Hendrix playing on it? I've got a CD called 'Jimi Hendrix -- Free
Spirit' which is one of the Youngblood discs, and I was naturally
peeved when I read--years after I had bought the disc--in the Hendrix
issue of Guitar Legends the Lonnie Youngblood had testified in court
that Hendrix didn't even play in at least some of the sessions he was
credited on. So what I want to know, is, is the disc I have fit for
anything other than sitting cold drinks on?
