True, but I expected more from Jimi -- as indebted as he was to the
guitar stylings of the late Curtis Mayfield (think "Remember" and
especially "Have You Ever Been?...[To Electric Ladyland] in which he
even tries to *sing* like Mayfield), I wasn't moved by it at all.
"Gypsy Woman" was a great song, and in fact was a major hit record for
Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions with which I am quite familiar. As
for Larry Lee's "Mastermind", that's another story entirely. But
having said that, I have real problems with the multiple
administrations of Jimi's catalog behaving as though those performances
never existed while re-marketing Jimi's show at Woodstock over the
years as "complete" and "deluxe". Larry got screwed. I see that Jerry
Velez (Jimi's Woodstock conga player, now recording as 'Gerardo' Velez)
is getting quite a bit of session work. More power to my Bronx
homeboy.
