Jimi's drawings from grade school and high school are signed "James
Hendrix".
Of course, Jimi's birth name was Johnny Allen, which Al changed a few years
later to James Marshall.
Chas changed Jimmy to Jimi when they went to England.

If that's true, then his initials would have spelled JAH, the Rastafarian
name for God.

OK. A little more digging reveals it's unknown "exactly" when Hendricks
became Hendrix, but it happened somewhere between 1826 and 1866. The
history is a bit foggy here, but Fannie Hendricks was a mulatto woman who
had been a slave at one time. Her husband's name was Jefferson Hendricks.
Later, living alone, she had a baby by a white man who was possibly a slave
overseer, or maybe an employer, named Philander B. Ross. That baby was
named Bertram Philander Ross Hendrix, keeping the mother's surname by her
marriage to Jefferson. Bertram married Nora Rose Moore who was 1/4
Cherokee. These were the parents of Al Hendrix and grandparents of our man
Jimi, making him 1/16 Cherokee and possibly a little over 1/8 white.
Anyway, it looks like they spelled it Hendrix for 3 full generations.

Perhaps it is true.. and VERY interesting how much more 'weight' is
added to the *divinations* found on the Defi's Axis Easter Egg Webpgs.
Such "connections" will be found gathered on the Page explaining

One more thing: Jimi was called "Buster" as a nickname until he was about 5
or 6.
JT
Final Update: Tony Brown's book, "Visual Documentary", has the name as
"Hendrick", no "s" until about 1912, 7 years before Al was born.

[.. just an aside..but, you can really understand why Jimi viewed
race as inconsequential to just being a Human Entity ..]

That's so funny ; ) ..I'v had three or four reprints Shap & Gleeb's bible

yeahh.. mmmhm.?. .. you can probably understand why a body might
wonder as the info's from various sources start widening..until
they don't even coincide or agree on damn near anything.. HA!..
Nope.. and I also remember that Jimmy switching to Jim'I' was
a showbiz deal circa "66.. w/Chaz/EXP/upon GB.. but that would
irrevelavant to the LAST name verifucation.. {OOPS!..veri-FI-cation}
S`only reason i din't go there.. as i figured he had to have been
using JIMMY JAMES & The BLUE FLAMES in da Big Apple..yes?
HA!.. I even saw a photo from one of The Experiences BBC-TV
appearences.. or SOME TV show- maybe Sweden.?..
where the combo's name was on a H-U-G-E backdrop.!!!.. curtain..
and it was either "The Jimmy Hendrix Experience" ~or~
"The Jimi Hendricks Experience".. tho i don't recall it being
"The Jimmy Hendricks Experience". .foggy on that too..but too
burnt to run down to the vaults tonight.

According to Carol Shiroky, Jimi had changed the spelling of his
first name during the "Blue Flames" days at the Cafe Wha before meeting
with Chas.
On a related subject...Leon Hendrix has released an album titled
"Seattle Rain." He has a website that it can be ordered from as well as
a nice little photo section. After an initial listening, it was not
quite what I had expected.
Don't get me wrong, there was some real nice "Jimi" influences weaved
throughout, and some real strong guitar playing as well. I guess I was
looking for the "second coming" and didn't count on Leon being his own
man with his own set of influences. All in all, a very good first
release.
Another fact (?) that I was not fully aware of concerns a third
brother of Jimi's that had been put up for adoption. Anyone have the
inside scoop on this??

Yeah well the fact remains that 'intially & thruout' the
(shall we say?) short 'Blue Flames 'tenure.. it's JIMMY..
And the *noticeable switch.. it implemented and embedded from
the debut.. with the arrival of The JIMI Handrix experience.
.. And that makes that part of your post a bit more water than Petrol.

To quote from "Black Gold" by Steven Roby:
"Hendrix called his new band the Blue Flames for two reasons: it had
worked for blues singer
Junior Parker, and it conveniently rhymed with James. Every now and
then Hendrix changed the group's name to the Rain Flowers, probably just
for fun. This was also the period he changed the spelling of his first
name. Carol Shiroky, his girlfriend at the time, recalled that the Cafe
Wha? had a blackboard in front, where Hendrix insisted on spelling his
first name "Jimi," not "Jimmy." She further asserted that Chas
Chandler, Hendrix's soon-to-be manager, may have been responsible for
giving him his last name back, but "Jimi was the one responsible for
spelling his [first] name that way. That was something very personal
with him," she said, "for whatever reason, I don't know."
There's your ice cold glass of 94 octane.
Also from the same book:
"When he was discharged, Al went to retrieve his son, whose name was
changed to James Marshall in memory of his deceased brother.
The new name was registered on September 11, 1946. Although Al began
divorce proceedings while in the service, he reconciled with Lucille.
Nonetheless, he believed her next son, born in 1948, was fathered by a
Filipino man she was seeing at the time. Another son arrived the
following year, from yet another father, and he too was given the
Hendrix name.
Al and Lucille were finally divorced on December 17, 1951. Al was
awarded custody of the three boys, James Marshall (called Jimmy), Leon
Morris, and Joseph Allen, although the latter was given up for
adoption".
Now before anybody gets a fistfull of sand in their shorts, I only
wished to pass on this info to you all in the gesture of trying to add
something to this group. If you feel compelled to critique, go right

What exactly is the problem here? You wanted to know where this
info was gleaned, and I supplied the source. Even wrote the passage
from the book and suppled the authors name. Does this make me a
"quote-slashing snoot?" No huffs here, just doing what I was asked.
I would like to believe that Jimi's name was his own idea, and not
a marketing ploy developed by his management to make a pretty picture
for the record buying publc. Does this change anything? Yup, if true,
it cancels out that little story, that over time time became one of the
many myths that surrounds Jimi's legacy.
Just another piece of the puzzel that when added makes a more complete
picture of Jimi's life.
Bottom line, I have more important things to do that to argue with
a screen full of words from you. I offered this to the group, you
wanted specifics, I gave them to you, and you come down on me like a ton
of bricks. Lemonade sounds like a good idea, who pissed in yours?

I chear ya NNS.. ..but let's chance a thought that MAYBE???.. it was
kinda BOTH factors that led to the cemented change when The Experience
finally arrived.. OK?..
Anyone that has learned the best part of the person that Jimi history
teaches.. knows that Jimi wouldn't have ever changed his OWN NAME
for Gods sake.. without it being an original idea that came to him first.!!
or at the VERY least- he fondly approved of..anything else is unfathomable.
