In Aqualung, Ian sings...."don't start away uneasy you
poor old sot."
But, I have seen the lyrics written as "you poor old sod."
So, which is it? I distinctly hear "sot" in most of the
versions I've got (boots, etc), but have also heard "sod".
Okay...get out the dictionary to start....
sot (n.) - a habitual drunkard (This fits...one can
see Aqualung being a bum and a drunk.)
sod (n.) [short for sodomite] (1818) chiefly Brit : bugger
(Yikes!! - I never knew this before, however, this is also
a possibility...he's watching those frilly panties run, so
he's probably watching the little boys too.
Is there a definitive answer? Does Ian sing one or
the other at any given time, considering he may know
of both definitions? Sort of giving Aqualung multiple
personalities...hehehe.
Thanks for the help and comments.

Well, you seem to have a strange dictionary...
First, a sodomite is someone who is fond of animals rather than little
boys.
Second, my dictionary says that a sod is an idiot, a wretched person.

The dictionary I used is the Merriam Webster's Collegiate
Dictionary, Tenth Edition, published in 1993, and I quoted
verbatim. Your reply prompted me to haul out and dust off
my Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, Volume
II P-Z (Compact?? It weighs 25 pounds and comes with its
own magnifying glass because the entries are too small to be
read by the naked human eye!! Now THIS is a strange
dictionary... ;) ) I didn't find the exact definitions as you
found, and I certainly don't want to get into a discussion
of sodomy in this forum, however, while a sodomite could
be "fond" of animals, the primary definition provides for
same-sex sex.
It seems to me different reference sources will give a
slightly different definition, but I think we have found
enough to give a clear picture of the personality of the
"poor old sot". He may or may not also be a sod.
Thank you for your comments, Laurenz!

Actually "sodomy" is a very nebulous term, and can refer to sex with
animals, homosexual sex, oral sex or anal sex -- either heterosexual
or homosexual.

An (official) German songbook from 1992 claims that it's 'sod'.

I checked my original LP with the lyrics insert, and right there it is.
Sod.

Well, why didn't I just do this to start off with???? All these
years, I thought it was sot. I also have the original LP with
the lyrics insert and must have at least looked at it back
then. Still kept hearing/singing sot. Until I see this reply,
take two steps left, pick out LP, take out lyric insert, and
damn, there it is! Don't I feel dumb!
(But don't you hear "sot" sometimes? Lie to me, okay?)
