I'm doing a paper on flutes in rock and roll and I was wondering if anyone
knew any other flute players besides Ian Anderson.

Peter Gabriel played the flute (as well as other woodwinds) for Genesis
on their early '70s albums/tours.

There was a time when Ian played flute on an album by Men Without Hats,
it was on one track called "On Tuesday", and then there was another
group, ( now if I can think of the name of it) that used flute in one
of their bigger hits...it sounded a lot like Ian's playing but wasn't.
I'll get the name and let you know in my next post.

Traffic's flute player was the late Chris Wood, and Focus' was Thijs Van
Leer.

A few other notable examples:

The Moody Blues' Ray Thomas
The Mothers Of Invention's Ian Underwood and Bunk Gardner
Horslips' Jim Lockhart
Gong's Didier Malherbe (alias Bloomdido Bad De Grass!)
Chicago's Walter Parazaider
Session man Harold McNair (played a lot with Donovan)

Even Peter Gabriel used to play flute when he was with Genesis--he also
plays on Cat Stevens' Mona Bone Jakon album. Note that most of the
players listed above don't play flute only; instead they switch between
flute and sax or other instruments. But then, Ian doesn't play flute
only, either!

Ann Wilson of Heart plays the flute, Thijs van Leer of Focus,
Barry Hay of Golden Earring, Burton Cummings of the Guess Who.
At the moment I am blanking out so if I remember more I will post.

One of the guys in Joe Walsh's band played a lot of flute on The Smoker
You Drink, The Player You Get, and You Can't Argue with a Sick Mind.
These albums and the Moody Blues prepared me to be blown away by Tull.

Greg Ham of Men At Work. "Down Under" was probably the most famous
song of the 80's to include the flute.
Also, there was a popular song called "One Night In Bangkok" that had
some flute parts, but I don't remember the band.

That was from a Broadway show? Cool! It was released as a single and
video, and became quite popular, in either late '84 or early '85. I
just can't recall the name of the group or performer that took credit,
however.

Ah, that one must be from the Ulvaeus/Lloyd-Weber/Rice rock opera
"Chess" from 1984.

I must be the only southern rock fan on this newsgroup. No one mentioned
Jerry Eubanks of the Marshall Tucker Band!

And Coven had a flautist on the intro to One Tin Soldier. That is the
only song of theirs I know, so I don't know if that was a full time
thing or not.

Here's some more GREAT use of flute in rock:

The late 60's group LOVE used flute in such songs as Que Vida and Orange
Skies on the album Da Capo (this has been re-released on CD).

Tim Weisberg is an excellent flute player. Check out the largely
instrumental Dan Fogelberg/Tim Weisberg collaboration, "Twin Sons of
Different Mothers" (Columbia 35339). If you enjoy IA's "Divinities," you
should enjoy this album. Weisberg also has some excellent solo albums.

Joe Walsh's drummer Joe Vitale also played flute. Check out Joe Walsh's
live album. (Forget the name)

Ray Thomas with the Moody Blues played flute.

Although more jazz than rock, Herbie Mann should also be mentioned here.

Great band "The Guess Who"

Whatever happened to them, they were really cool.
I love to listen to the "Share the Land" album.
I had forgotten the flute, but you are right!

The French jazz rock group Gong had a flute player (Dieder Malurbe?)

Is this the same Murray Head that sang the part of Judas on the original
_Jesus Christ Suprstar_? I thought that dude had an ecellent voice but
never heard of him again. The part of Jesus, as most know, was played by
Ian Gillan of Deep Purple (the "Smoke on the Water" era of Deep Purple,
that is.)

By the way, the flutes on that album were played by Brian Warren and Chris
Taylor. Chris Spedding was one of the guitarists.

Although his usual instrument is a double-necked electric mandolin,
Lief Sorbye of Tempest plays a flute sometimes (and not only when
doing a Tull cover).

The instrumental band Ozric Tentacles also has a flute player, but
he doesn't seem to be prominent on the two albums of theirs I've heard.

Hi,
If you like 80's rock, check out "Men Without Hats" and "The The."
I don't recall the name of the "the the" song but there was one in the
early 80's that I thought was Tull at first. The MWH song to try is "On
Tuesday" which is off the "Pop Goes the World" album. Also, wasn't
there some flute in a few ELP songs?

Ann Wilson, of Heart, played the flute in several tracks on "Dreamboat
Annie" and in "Love Alive" on "Little Queen". She may have played it on
other albums, too, but I can't think of examples off the top of my head.

The skinny guy in the Moody Blues (Ray Thomas?) played the flute and it featured prominently in Legend of a Mind
("Timothy Leary's Dead"), and it comes up again in Veteran Cosmic Rocker from Long Distance Voyager.
