During the Divinities tour, Ian had Chris Leslie along for violin...Any info
that can be had as to the tunes "Dust Devils/She Walks Through The Fair" (Title
pulled from memory, may be inaccurate) or ANY of his music would be greatly
appreciated. I know he's played for Fairport Convention, but am not sure on
which albums.
Thanks!
Andy
She Moves Through the Fair is, I believe, a traditional tune. There is a
version of it on the Cheiftains "Long Black Veil" sung by Sinead O'connor
(This version is entitled "HE moved through...)
If I remember Ian's commentary correctly, Dust Devils is also some sort of
traditional tune.

There is a 2 CD set of Fairport's 25th Aniversary Concert on which Chris
Leslie subs for Ric Sanders at the '92 Cropredy Festival. The CD is
"dedicated to Chris Leslie with much thanks from Fairport for saving our
festival, following Ric's unfortunate fiddle player/plate glass window
interface..." If you like Fairport this is definately worth getting. BTW
in the early days of Fairport Convention the band recorded a very
nice version of She Moves Through the Fair. It's on What WE Did On Our
Holidays and it's one of my favorite Sandy Denny performances.

IIRC, when he's not helping out Fairport or Anderson, Chris Leslie
plays in Whippersnapper. (And if I'm wrong, well, they're good
anyway!)

"She Walks Through The Fair" is an old Irish vocal folk song, I've
heard it sung in recordings from the early twentieth century,
actually, but I don't have access to this recording at the moment. It
was also the basis for the guitar piece "White Summer" recorded by
many people in the sixties, including Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, and
Jimmy Page. I've heard recordings of Davey Graham's, I believe, and
many many recordings of Jimmy Page doing it, it was a popular
Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin live piece, and due to the modal tuning he
used to play the song with, it was mixed with a similiar piece, "Black
Mountainside" (a variation of Bert Jansch's (?) "Black Waterside") and
used as an intro to "Kashmir".
When I heard the vocal version I was surprised that an a capella piece
was the basis for a guitar instrumental, but I'm sure there's alwyas
been something more to it than a vocal melody.

I was at the Cropredy festival at which the Fairport 25th Anniversary CD
that W.S. Gumby wrote about was recorded. Chris Leslie sang a magnificent
version of a traditional song called "I Wandered By A Brookside" that
sounded so much like vintage Procol Harum that I got chills that were
nothing to do with the Oxfordshire night air. Fortunately, this
performance is on the CD!

Very good indeed. I only acquired the CD recently, but I prefer playing
along in the key that AAE used than the original Tull key :) (It's
easier, anyway :)
Cheers,

It wasn't on any album, just a 3-track CD single which I can't remember
the title of ... "Road to Your Soul"? Probably something else ...
I never saw it in the US, and it took me some searching to find in the
UK--even then I found it without the insert, just a CD and thin jewelbox!
Cheers,
Carl

Something else. It was "December."

That's the one! Apparently it was meant to go in a special CD wallet that
you had to buy separately...or maybe it was one of those "disc two of a
two disc set" deals...
