1986:
I'm always checking out new bands, especially "all things Scottish".
I'd read the article on them in Rolling Stone and thought they seemed
really arrogant. William was in a bad mood during the interview.
Well, I didn't have much money to buy records back then, so, since I'd
never heard a Mary Chain song before, I decided *not* to spend my
limited cash buying "Psychocandy" - because of that article I read.
Fast forward to Fall 1987...
I was lying in bed late one night recovering from a serious bout with
illness/lameness/general malaise... I was channel surfing. It's all I
could do. I came across that dingy, short-lived late night TV show
"The Wilton North Report" when I heard the announcement "... next up
The Jesus & Mary Chain!"
Ok, I thought... isn't that that arrogant Scottish rock group I read
about a year ago? I was surprised because I thought they'd be, well,
too arrogant to be invited on an American TV show.
I decided to pop a tape in the VCR just in case something crazy
happened that I just... had to have on tape.
They sang "April Skies" live and I was immediately transfixed on
them. I'm glad now that I taped that show because I've played the
video over and over a million times and I'm still hooked on it.
There was an interview with them on MTV that same weekend and
I remember being surprised at how polite, softspoken and articulate
they seemed to be. These people wrote "Suck" and "Boyfriends
Dead"??? Naahh! I couldn't believe it.
To this day it's those contradictions about them that continue to
fascinate me.
"Darklands" was the first album I bought, although I went on a buying
frenzy that first week after I saw them on TV... trying to get my
hands on anything I could find. "Darklands" was too hard for me to
listen to at first because I was going through some bad times back
then, but I thought Psychocandy was the most *fun*, humorous (yes!),
exciting thing I'd heard in eons. It gave me the energy and the
agression I needed to pull my butt out of bed on some days...

wondering how you were introduced to the JaMC.
What was the first record you heard? Or how did
you get into them?
Personally I'd never heard of them and had a complete
loathing of music at that time because the British charts
were dominated by acts like Kylie Minogue.
A friend said he was going to see Dinosaur Jr in the
Rollercoaster tour and did I want to go with him, not
knowing what he was on about I said yes and gave
him my money.
Couple of weeks later we turn up at the Birmingham
NEC. First on is My Bloody Valentine who play so loud
there are people leaving the building in pain because they
can't hear anymore (I was already impressed : ) ), next
Blur who although a bit sad were very danceable, then
Dinosaur Jr with J running round like a loony singing
Freak Scene (now one of my favourite songs).
Finally the stage goes dark then there's strobes and
subliminal messages projected onto screens and loads
of noise the Jesus and Mary Chain running through Reverence.
WOW talk about a life changing event this was the kind of
music I'd been looking for it was just well hidden from the charts.
Next day I brought Honeys Dead (first record I'd ever brought)
and since then everything I can get my hands on.
