Hi,

to inform you guys and ask your opinions.
Teldec is releasing a "BACH 2000" collection. These are 153 CD with
the, what they claim, complete work of JS Bach. With recordings from
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman, Andreas Staier
and others.

More info can be found at
http://www.warner-classics.com/teldec/bach2000/b2k_frame.htm

If you register before end of june you'll receive a 15% discount.

According to my reseller the price will be 775 Euro (658 Euro with
discount).

There will be a Light edition which doesn't contain the Cantates.
It will be 455 Euro or 388 Euro with discount.

I don't have much CD's from Bach until now, do you guys think this is
an interesting offer and the recordings are of a good quality ??

Thanks for your opinions,

Luc Mathys

Hi Luc,
First of all, there is probably no bad recording in it. Definitely though,
no new recordings have been made and almost all of them will come from the
back-catalogue, dating from the late 60s/early 70s (Matthew Passion,
1971)until quite recently (Brandenburg concertos, a recording of a few years
ago). It depends really on what you want. Brief comparison between
Harnoncourt/Leonhardt edition of the cantatas and the Koopman edition
Harnoncourt/Leonhardt:
Made with boys only
Mainly two microphone technique
Very few edits
Some instruments according to modern standards badly out of tune
Boy soloists how sometimes are really trying to get through.
Diverging standards, Harnoncourt using more and more soloist with big
vibrato (Ruud van der Meer and probably also Thomas Hampson) and Leonhardt
staying true to his original intentions.
Koopman
Mixed chorus
Recordings are heavily edited and don't result from a complete performance
of the work, as the former set does.
Everything brilliantly in tune.
Soloists are being replaced often.
All in all: Koopman more or less gives a spic and span Bach, the
Harnoncourt/Leonhardt recordings can sound amateurish, yet very much more
true to the character of the respective works.
Inevitably, the Teldec edition will be a somewhat mixed bag. If I would have
to choose a Brandenburg set from the back catalogue I would choose the
recording Leonhardt originally made for RCA/Seon. Yet, Teldec/Warner didn't
choose that recording.
I won't buy this edition, one of the reasons being my Bach collection is
already quite big.

Kind regards,
Sybrand Bakker

I have also heard that the Harnoncourt performances have some tuning
problems, and also that the instruments sound abrasive at times.

This is divided into 12 boxes, that may be purchased separately; the
only box that I find interesting there is that with Bach's complete
organ works performed by Ton Koopman: 15 CD's, some of which, if I
understand properly, not yet appeared.

And then mayb some of the two harpsichord boxes, but I don't know
exactly what is inside them.

That's good news, if true: I saw it advertised on jpc courier for 2000
DM (about 1000 Euro); but german prices tend to be quite high.
