Tonight, each contestant performed a cover song and an original song.

1. Dilana - "Behind Blue Eyes" by the Who
"Supersoul" (original song)

I like the way she sang the Who song. Her original wasn't bad, but it
wasn't quite "bangin'", as Tommy put it. As we all know, lyrics are not
her strong suit.

2. Magni - "Back In The U.S.S.R." by the Beatles
"When The Time Comes" (original song)

Very good on both counts. Phrasing was flawless. Tommy Lee couldn't
tell the difference between the songs? Give me a break!

3. Storm Large - "Suffragette City" by David Bowie
"What the What is Ladylike" (original
song)

Entertaining. She's got attitude to spare. Her and Navarro interacted
well for the Bowie song. I don't quite agree with Dave that her
original was the best in the show's history.

4. Lukas Rossi - "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi
"Headspin" (original song)

His best week ever. I liked his arrangement of the Bon Jovi song. The
verses sounded better than the choruses, which were anticlimactic. His
original had real power. I'm still not into his voice.

5. Toby Rand - "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers
"Throw It Away" (original song)

He does well doing Killers songs. His original rocked! I couldn't sit
still. He also kept his cool very well when Tommy grabbed his ass.
Ewwww!

After all the talk about changing up The Who song she didn't. She was sharp
on a few low notes, but did a decent job. I was totally underwhelmed by the
original. I forgot it the moment it was over and didn't think much of the
lyrics that I did make out.

>2. Magni - "Back In The U.S.S.R." by the Beatles
> "When The Time Comes" (original song)

First time I've heard Magni mess up -- he pooched the intro to USSR. Decent
cover overwise. The original was very heavy-metal-ish, I thought a good choice
to show off Supernova-chops. The strange negative comment makes me wonder if
they are setting him up to go home.

>3. Storm Large - "Suffragette City" by David Bowie
> "What the What is Ladylike" (original song)

I love SC, and I _hated_ the strange one-note arrangement she did. Why didn't
she just move it into a key she could sing it in??? Dave rocked out. Did they
really not rehearse that, or was this pre-staged I wonder. Her original was
excellent and she really showed a side of her I hadn't seen before -- a solid
engaging performer (as opposed to someone pretending to perform). Nice job.

>4. Lukas Rossi - "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi
> "Headspin" (original song)

Well, it was an interesting choice to change up the Bon Jovi tune. Good choice
I think, I don't think it'd have worked for him to try to do it same as original.
His own original was good, though I found it slightly forgettable, but I think
that wasn't Lukas' fault, it was Toby's!

>5. Toby Rand - "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers
> "Throw It Away" (original song)

Toby killed it, pardon the pun. The Killers' tune was smack in the sweet spot of
his range (Jason had told him before that his mid-range was fantastic) and his
original song was very catchy and got the whole audience jumping. I think Toby
just moved himself up to the top of the front-runners list.

Overall, an enjoyable show. I really agree that it might be anything-goes here.
I can see Supernova guys being torn. I think Tommy wants Lukas, Jason wants Toby
and Gilby ... maybe till this week I'd have said Magni but now I don't know... Storm?

I really don't think Dilana has been keeping up, and tearing whatever muscle she
tore couldn't have helped at this point in the game.

It's time for the rockers to give us a little original treatment. Each
gets to cover a song and sing an original in a mini-set. Can they
entertain the crowd, or more importantly _me_ for two songs? Let's
see.

There's a bit from the webisode showing the troubles Lukas and Dilana
had in the song writing clinic. They also show Dilana's 'screw you'
comment to the Internet Fans, and finish with her toubles with 'Behind
Blue Eyes'. They're piling on the Anti-Dilana sentiment pretty thick.

Dilana Robichauld
Song 1: Behind Blue Eyes (The Who)

Better than I thought it would be, given what was done on the webisode.
She's confined to a chair with a pulled calf muscle. How do you pull
your calf muscle in rehersal? She plays it safe and sticks to the
original arrangement. Thank God for small favours. It was good, but
not great. She almost had me until she until she changed the last
verse from 'man' to 'girl'. Another thing that drives me crazy is how
literal she is with her gestures. Why did she have to mime a smile
when that lyric came up? She did the same with "I'll be Watching You".
Drives me NUTS.

Dilana Robichauld
Song 2: Super Soul (Original)

Meh. Fairly generic. It seemed that she was drowned out by the house
band many times. I give her props for hopping around on one foot, but
at the end of the day, even with two legs, she probably couldn't sell
this song to me.

Dave and Supernova's praise was decidedly muted tonight.

Magni Ásgeirsson
Song 1: Back in the USSR (The Beatles)

Awesome again. He nailed it.

Magni Ásgeirsson
Song 2: When The Time Comes (Original)

Quite good. I'd listen to it again, easily.

Supernova stretches hard again to criticize this guy. Magni gets the
line of the night, though. "They sound the same because I sang both
of them." Awesome!

Susan Storm Large
Song 1: Suffragette City (David Bowie) w/ Dave Navaro on guitar

Very good, but not killer. She still has all the tools, and I don't
doubt she can be a success.

Susan Storm Large
Song 2: (What the What is) Ladylike (Original)

I was wondering how she was going to clean up the lyric. I don't know
-- I expected more from her for the original. She could easily invest
in two or three more lyrics. The whole repetitive "what the what the
what the what" was beyond annoying. Given that I know what the 'what'
is supposed to be, I found the song to be extremely juvenile. Dave
calls this the best original he heard. I call him a lousy judge,
really. Trees and Pretty Vegas still eclipse any original seen so far
this year. Dave sure loves the hyperbole, though, doesn't he?

Lukas Rossi
Song 1: Living on a Prayer (Bon Jovi)

Him and a guitar singing a stripped down version of a pop rock song.
Didn't pull it off, in my opinion. He could have done so much better.
Not quite different enough the original.

Lukas Rossi
Song 2: Headspin (Original)

About his mother. "Nobody's perfect". Has he turned into Dilana?
Pretty good. He still has the best stage presence of the bunch, when
he's not tied down to his guitar. Did he need to do the spin though?
Did I mention I hate literal gestures during a song?

Supernova loved it, of course. Gilby is 'inspired' by Lukas. OK.
They're pushing him as hard now as they did Dilana in the past.

Toby Rand
Song 1: Mr Brightside (The Killers)

I don't think this song really suited his voice at all. He seemed to
be singing a bit too high, but I'm not terribly familar with the
original version.

Toby Rand
Song 2: Throw it Away (Original)

Great energy, great audience interaction. Song has a great hook with
the "oh oh oh ohoh" bit. Did he need to run into the crowd again?
What's wrong with staying on the stage? I like that his song had a
small guitar solo and some instrumental bits. Shows that it's not all
about him. And if there's any doubt that Tommy Lee has some sort of
mad man love going for Toby, it's been erased. Best original of the
night. Evs.

Band loves him. What's not to like, though. Probably the best set of
the night. Of all the contestants, he's the only one who didn't say
"here's my original". I mean, we KNOW it's your original coming up --
we watch the show and know what's up!

At the end of the show, they showed the five rockers in order of votes
received so far, and they are: I have no idea. They didn't actually
show them on my broadcast. My ordering is:

Toby
Magni
Storm
Lukas
Dilana

Toby gets the nod because his set was more entertaining, even thought
Magni did a better job on each of his songs thant Toby did. Likewise,
Storm and Lukas are extremely close for me, but the difference between
Suffragette City and Living on a Prayer was greater than the difference
between Headspin and What the What is Ladylike.

Ranking the originals, I'd go with:

Toby (Throw it Away)
Magni (When the Time Comes)
Lukas (Headspin)
Storm (What the What is Ladylike)
Dilana (Super Soul)

Going on my iPod tonight is 'Throw it Away', 'When the Time Comes',
'Back in the USSR' and possibly 'Headspin'.

Agree on both counts. I was surprised to hear her "pretty voice" on
BBE. The original was, as you say, completely forgettable.

I am somewhat bothered by the fact that they are so blatantly
manipulating us in their desire to have her in the bottom three. That
said, she didn't do anything to keep herself out.

Misstep aside, I was mesmerised by him on Back in the USSR. He has got
this beautiful rich voice in his low range, and pure clear voice in his
high range. Magic. I have said it before, he's too good for this
band.

His original was quite good, and wtf was the criticism about? He
totally rocked both songs and he's getting my vote. Loved the way he
shot TL's remarks right back at him.

Suffragette City - I thought this would be a good fit but it was too
low for her. What on earth is her range. Not good.

I don't know; I heard a lot of praise about her original song but it
just didn't do it for me. Sorry, I felt like I was in a lesbian bar or
something.

There were moments in LOAP when I thought he was great. His original
was really good, too, though not up to my expectations after hearing
all the praise heaped on him in the spoilers.

I realize that I totally hate his teeth and I handle him better when I
don't have to see them.

I picked Toby from day one, and then lost interest. In the last couple
weeks he's been coming back. Aside from the fact that he is totally
hot, he puts on a good show and he is the epitome of Aussie good humor.
I don't know the Killers song and I wasn't crazy about it, but the
original song was, pardon me, killer.

Agreed. I think she's going home tomorrow.

Order at the end of the show:

1. Toby
2. Lukas
3. Magni
4. Storm
5. Dilana

Should go home: overall - Storm based on tonight - Dilana
Will go home: Dilana. SN has laid the groundwork very well.

>Freaky D
Her voice was probably the best sound-wise on the beginning of BBE. Her
original song was lousy. How pathetic when you have to rely on pity
votes. I guess the song had a good message, but I don't see her pulling
out of last place this week.

>Magni
His performances were so boring this week. Again he messed up the words.
Can't be too harsh on him since he's my number 2 pick. I like when he
kicks in with the spontaneous screaming at parts. Dilana should learn
how to use her scary voice in that fashion. I can see him in the bottom
3 this week. Everything was lacking.

>Storm
This had to be her best night! Her voice was a nce pairing with the
Bowie tune. Don't think anyone else could have pulled that song off. Her
original tune was catchy, but the 'what the what' got annoying. They
should have used 'what the hell' instead of fuck as in her original. Her
and Dave really played off each other and they got a good response.

>Lukas
For the first time I really liked him. His arrangement worked well. He
still has to enunciate his words better. I would have preferred him to
kick it in at the 'whoa we're half way there' chorus parts though & then
went back to the softer arrangement at the verses. He has a good
attitude and seems the most 'real'.

>Toby
Rocked it! His version of Mr. Brightside wasn't as good as Marty's, but
it was a good cover. There's not much you can do with that song. It was
definitely in his range. His original was the highlight of the night for
me. He embodied the word 'rockstar' on every level with his performance.
The boys looked like they were really into it. GO TOBY!

I'm really feeling the castoff will be down to Magni & Dilana. Dilana
has got to go! Ratings will be up after the Storm & Brooke kiss.

She *does* still have that sweet, little-girl voice, when she cares to
use it! I wish she'd done the whole Blue Eyes like that, that is a
marketable track, sez I. Her own song was - passable. With work, I
think it could pass on an album, mebbe even a SN album. The words?
Who's kidding who, this is rock music, not one song in fifty has
memorable words! OK, Dilana lives for the stage, and for me, I love
her on it.

What's a USSR? What's a BOAC? What's a Beatle? Disconnect the
phone, wot's that?

Yeah OK, Magni is a machine, but this wasn't his best night. Both
songs were in the same key, both were sung straight up. The original
had some nice runs and great energy, but I'm not sure it quite hung
together. Was it a power ballad, or wot?

Oh so they ARE going to take some of the finalists along to open for
SN? Good on them, probably entirely on my advice last week, and
you're welcome!

I love Storm. I've said she ought to be the winner, based in large
part on her fantastic interpretations a few weeks ago, that Tommy said
were in "wrong sauce". They were far better than her interp tonight
of Bowie, and that original heads in a good direction, but needs a lot
of work. Dave and Tommy, wot are ya talking about???? The random
noise that passes for judgement from these guys just slays me.

BTW, is there something wrong with my set, or is everyone dressed in
monochrome tonight?

Me no grok no Lukas.

If I wandered into a student bar/club near a state university in some
midwest state and saw this act, I'd say yeah. For that matter, this
is maybe the first cover this year, where I really don't know the
original.

But people like him, even when he makes like a sheepdog, I guess.

Was Tommy trying to fix some wiring, or wot?

Brightside has two notes. His original had three. Good choice, as
Toby is a good performer, but he's no singer.

I had a thought while watching this, that it's a good thing Frank
Zappa didn't live to see this, cuz I think something about Toby Rand's
act would have killed him. I'm not even sure what I mean by that.

--

So, are these really original songs, or are they songs the contestants
have been singing offline with their bands for the last three years?
Just curious.

I suspect the votes this week are going to be absolutely even between
all five. Someone call the Supreme Court, and recount those votes for
Pat Buchanan.

I very much fear Storm will go, and if not Storm, Dilana. If it were
up to me, it'd be one of the guys, heck, any of the guys.

Well, let's just see if, when it's all over, SN, doesn't take the rest
of my advice and record with the top five or six or ten contestants
after all, and why not, give the House Band a little bandwidth on the
album, too.

I don't know exactly what you mean by that either, but maybe it has to
do with the expressionless, prepackaged vibe he gives off whenever he
performs. He managed to make a very passionate song like Brightside
rather boring IMO. And when he's talking, he seems to have the
personality of a block of wood. Still don't get the whole Toby thing.

I've grown to like Lukas the best, which surprises me greatly because
he was my least favorite when this thing started. He may not be the
world's greatest talent, but there's just something interesting and
watchable about him.

Did not like the first at all, it was boring. I did like the original

him credit for a decent translation. I loved his comeback.

Not bad on the first, but not for her again. The original was alright
(seems to be a pattern) but wasn't "Pretty Vegas" which was the best
original from this show ever.

I hated the way he did the first. H A T E D. It's one of my favorite songs
and brings back a lot of memories of time and place and Lukas ruined it.
Boo.

As for the original, before he sang my son said he was an emo singer and is
going to sing an emo song. As my son told my mom, emo singers are full of
angst and depression and whine whine whine through songs that are slow and
"feel sorry for me". Sure enough, the song fit the bill perfectly.

And no, Dilana is not an emo singer, so don't even go there.

Speaking of an emo song, the first is one of the top ones. But Toby did
alright on a song I'm sick to death of hearing.

As for his original, it was kicking. The best of the night by far. I think
this may be his "Trees" moment.

In all, not a bad show. But I think they are showing bias really badly. Is
Dilana all that bad that Burnett and Co have to trash her on every
occasssion? And for all they say that Lukas isn't a lock, it's starting to
look more and more that that's who they want.

Best in show tonight was Toby with Magni in second place.

They made us think "Behind Blue Eyes" was going to be a disaster, but I
liked it. Her original, not so much. It was just another "I'm
empowered" song. She was already breaking down emotionally, now it
looks like she's breaking down physically. She may have reached the
end of the line.

> 2. Magni - "Back In The U.S.S.R." by the Beatles

The Beatles song was good, but I've come to expect more than just good
from him. I really liked his original - it rocked, and let him show
off the versatility of his voice.

Good energy on the Bowie song, but her voice seemed flat. The original
seemed like something from a Broadway show, and I don't like Broadway
shows.

I didn't care for what he did with the Bon Jovi song, but, as I think
somebody else pointed out, it would have been awful if he'd done it
straight. Real good original - I could imagine hearing that on the
radio, even with his vocals.

> 5. Toby Rand - "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers

Best overall performance of the night, taking both songs into account.
After a slump, he's back near the top of the list of contenders.

For the most part, I was very impressed with the originals tonight - I
think they put the Supernova songs we've heard so far to shame.

Take your bows! Seriously, I think they got the idea from some of last
season's contestants. In Canada, there was a recent tour called the
Rock Star Roadshow, which featured Suzie, MiG, Ty, Deanna, and Tara. It
reportedly was considered a success. I think Supernova (and possibly
Mark Burnett) want to be in on the profits for it this time, so they're
having it done officially with the House Band.

> So, are these really original songs, or are they songs the contestants

Well, probably both. If they wrote the songs three years ago, they are
still their original songs. I know that Lukas has performed "Headspin"
with his band Rise Electric (I saw them do it on YouTube), and Magni
said something about his song being translated, so his Icelandic band
has probably done it. The other three have probably done their songs
before, too. I would do the same thing. Why struggle to write a new
song from scratch when you've already got one that worked for you
somewhere else?

Storm's ladylike lost a lot since she couldn't sing "What the fuck is
ladylike if ladies like to do what the fuck they like?" Instead the
TV-friendly "What the what" which just sounds wierd. It's still an
awesome song but...

A lot of the power comes from the "What the FUCK..." and that is lost
in the PG version

a month ago she had the audience in the palm of her hand and she keeps
compounding her problems.
nobody cares anymore. she's done.

i thought he was good. also thought his original was in line with the kind
of song Supernova might release. didn't understand the lack of love from T
Lee.

didn't care for Suffragette City. thought she sang the chorus kinda
upside-down and it just wasn't for me. i liked the original and thought it
was her best performance (and one of the top two tonight). i'm a fan and
expect to see more of her in the show business - but i don't think she will
become the singer for Supernova.

props for doing LOAP as a waltz - but i wouldn't want to listen to it again.
kind of thing you'd do in a concert to give the others a break. the
original was not my cup of tea, but he is good at what he does.

>
> 5. Toby Rand - "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers

the cover was a cover. i don't think he added any value. the original was
one of the top two performances of the night. it doesn't hurt that the
ladies seem to like him.

Overall:
the original songs were better than the covers, save for Dilana. i thought
Toby slightly outshined Storm, but it might have been because he went last.

Download Power Rankings:
i had mp3s ripped and in fileshare by 11pm eastern and logged all activity.
from the start it was clear that almost everyone needed one song. it was
uploaded more than all other songs combined.

Storm Large - (WTFi) LadyLike [58%]

Toby Rand - Throw It Away [12%]
Lukas Rossi - LOAP [10%]
Lukas Rossi - HeadSpin [ 6%]
Dilana - (combined) [5%]
Magni - (combined) [5%]
Toby Rand - Mr.B [3%]
the rest [<1%]

Encore:
since Toby had it last week, i would give it to Storm.
if she sings with Supernova, then maybe they give it to Toby.

Safe:
Toby and (Lukas or Storm)
i think Lukas has a loyal fan base.

Who Should Go:
Dilana. they can still milk her fans with the concert tour. i don't think
they want her for Supernova anymore.

I agree--nothing like making it obvious what they want the voters to
do....*not* vote for her. My poor daughter isn't understanding the "turn
against her" vibe.

He looked positively *beautiful* last night....sigh. And sounded the same.
Voted a lot for him........hope it worked.

I agree...it was catchy, but in a porno kind of way. ;-)

Have I mentioned how much I hate when someone sings like they have sh** in
their mouth?

I didn't buy the whole song....and Supernova fellated him like it was the
best thing they'd ever heard. The lyrics were trite...and probably took 10
minutes to write. Angst for angst's sake.

I've always understood the likability factor of Toby, but have never voted
for him....never been overly impressed. Last night he was a *Rock Star.*
The original made me a believer.

Who's going tonight? I should prepare my daughter... it's Dilana.

Sorry, but dropping the F-Bomb is a cheap way to elicit power from a
song. Don't get me wrong, I'm not particularly prudish about such
things, and many songs / movies / books / other entertainment I enjoy
makes liberal use of that particular word (a favourite of mine being a
comedy routine by Bowser and Blue called "The Use of the F Word in
Canada"). It has its place in entertainment, and I understand its use
in Storm's song -- vulgarity is not particularly ladylike at all. It
fits.

What detracts from the song, though, is the last, oh, 1/3 where she
just repeats "What the what" over and over again. I'm assuming her
original lyrics had 50% less 'whats' in that part. At that point, the
non-TV friendly version seems like an excuse to repeatedly scream
'fuck' into a microphone. At that point, the word loses all power.

A quick google tells me:

Throw it Away performed by Juke Kartel (Toby Rand on vocals)
Ladylike performed by Storm Large and the Balls (love that band name)
Headspin perfomed by Rise Electric (Lukas Rossi on vocals)
When the Time Comes -- coming up blank (not surprising if it has
translated lyrics)
Super Soul - coming up blank again.

Maybe the word 'super' in 'Super Soul' was added for the band 'super'nova?

Storm's "LadyLike" was the clear winner of the night.
with time, Toby's "Throw It Away" gained momentum and separated itself from
the also-rans.

after 16 hours of upload:
------------------------
Storm - LadyLike [52%]*
Toby - Throw It Away [36%]
Dilana - SuperSoul [4%]
Magni - When The Time Comes [3%]
Lukas - LoaP [2%]
Lukas - HeadSpin [1%]
Storm - Suffragette City [1%]
Toby - Mr. B [1%]
the rest combined [<1%]

* "LadyLike" skews a little low here because it spread quickly and was later
downloaded from multiple hosts.

Blue Eyes was adequate.
Her original blew.
Super Soul? Give me a break. She's a psychic vampire.

He was really bad on USSR
I slept through the original

The Bowie was not good.
The original was some kind of Eminem ripoff. Interesting but not to my taste.

He sucks and he always has.
Watching him is like seeing some kind of SNL parody.

Not bad.

Shitty week, overall.

I'm happy for Storm, but I have to say, on the quality of the music I
can't understand it. OTOH, looking at the competition, maybe I can.
Might have expected Toby's Mr. B to do better. Hmph.

Implication is this reflects the voting, I presume.
