He says he doesn't ever use his real name in the newsgroups, but in fact he
has done so quite often (I'll prove that in a moment), EVEN in this
newsgroup.
He says he has "35+ years in electronics and digital electronics (I was
working with TTL in the military as far back as 1969), and 30+ years in
music and audio." He said that "when a song of mine gets published, I don't
care who does it as long as I get my royalty checks" implying he's
established in the music business to the point that someone has actually
covered one of his songs. In discussing compressors he says he has "designed
and built several, from tube based, to FET based, to opamp based, both
optical and electrical."
In reference to the esteemed Harvey Gerst, he said he got "4940 hits on your
[Harvey's] name... I only get about ten percent of that on mine." That
implies one would expect about 500 hits for the real Porky. To me
personally, it also implies that somehow he's just a scaled down version of
Harvey. I get that based on all the name dropping he did in response to
Harvey's credentials.
So, what's his real name? Mike Rieves. Try a search for Mike Rieves
yourself. You get a whole lot fewer than 500 hits. In fact, you get 65.
Google, however, is smart enough to whittle those down to about 15. The
other 50 hits are just where his name is repeated on essentially the same
page (like on the quotes on a message board). His online credentials don't
begin to compare with Harvey's. Actually, his "credentials" are just things
he has said about himself. There are no articles or books he has written. No
credits for bands, albums, songs or designs. No sites where you can hire
him. Nada.
However, you can hear his music. Check out these two links:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/7/madmike.htm
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/4/eightinchpeanuts.htm
From his SoundClick bio, he explains that he did some work in the 70s with
some bands, then settled down into family life and day jobs which "went on
for twenty-odd years until the kids had grown up and left to raise families
of their own." He goes on to say that " in 1998 I put together a PC-based
home studio." To me that hardly sounds like 30+ years in music and audio. On
one site he lists his occupation as "Computer consultant and audio
engineer." On another he says he is "semi-retired." In terms of his military
career, he said he served a couple of years in Okinawa as a "Spec 4, MOS
23U20, Nike HIPAR Radar and T-1 Simulator Repair." Nowhere can I find any
independent information about what he has accomplished or what he does for a
living. He says he has installed studios for people and taught them mixing.
He's made references to "student" as if people pay him to teach them about
mixing.
Now, I *know* that Porky's gonna claim I twisted all this around somehow to
make him look bad. Make your judgments yourself. To me he sounds like an
ordinary guy who dabbles with this stuff for fun. There is absolutely
NOTHING wrong with that - I'm one of those guys. I just don't like hearing
all this crap about how he's some great expert. I don't call a guy who
played the club circuit, recorded some demos in the 70s, did nothing with
any bands for 20 years and now plays with an Audigy in his basement an
expert in home studios.
He told us here he opened for some big acts and played in front of 30,000
people. Funny, he doesn't mention that anywhere else where he describes what
his band has done. He mentions Muscle Shoals, but neglects to mention he
opened for a band big enough to draw 30,000 people? I mean, if you're going
to get into detail about how you "toured the Eastern seaboard, the South and
Midwest" wouldn't you mention that you once opened for <insert band here>?
Now, how do I know his real name is Mike Rieves? As has been pointed out
already, I'm a pit bull, thorough researcher and a good logician. :-) I also
spent a year as a bill collector while in college (without the use of the
Internet). I loved the skip-tracing part and was pretty good at it. I
figured I'd give it the old college try.
Here's how I figured it out. My proof is 100% reliable, so don't start
posting your denial, Porky. Just read on.
After Porky got Harvey to list his credentials, he listed his own. I asked
Porky to discuss his music playing, where he listed a bunch of other
information. I figured if he had something unique, he would mention it. And,
seeing how he likes to brag (how often has he mentioned Muscle Shoals?), I
figured he couldn't resist mentioning it in other places. So, I guess I kind
of baited him. Anyway, I was thinking that with all his boasting, I was
bound to cross-reference some hits and dig up something. Little did I know
how easy it would be!
He said he had a "GTX 33 guitar with Seymore Duncan pickups." I never heard
of such a guitar (turns out to be a Japanese knock-off of a Strat). And how
many people who did own such a guitar would swap out the pickups with
Seymour Duncans *and* choose to tell people about it? So, I decided that was
a good place to start. I did a search for GTX-33 and got only 100 hits. Good
start, but a lot of hits nonetheless. I learned that guitar is made by
Kaman, so I narrowed it down to just 9 hits. Lo and behold the third hit
points to Mad Mike's band page on SoundClick.
I surfed there and what did I find? A description of equipment virtually
identical to the one Porky listed: GTX-33 with Seymour Duncan pickups,
Fender P-Bass, Johnson J-Station, Mackie board, Roland V-Drums, Lawson,
Shure and Marshall Mics, Alesis effects and running Sonar!
What else did I learn? Well, his band's history matches with what he's told
us here. The age is perfect. Did time in the Army. Recorded in Muscle Shoals
studio.
But was it him? I figured I had better know for sure. We already knew he
used BellSouth. He had posted a link to a music store in Fort Oglethorpe,
GA. He talked about working on the Grand Ole Opry. At this point I figured I
had him narrowed down to the Georgia/Tennessee area. Turns out Mad Mike is
from Columbia, Tennessee. So far so good.
I looked at the lyrics on his SoundClick site. The author was listed as M
Rieves. Since the band page says his name is Mike, I started searching for
Mike Rieves. I then find hits for a Mike Rieves in Columbia, TN. The e-mail
address is listed as mr...@bellsouth.net. From there I started searching the
newsgroups and found lots of posts (most in a Mustang newsgroup). So much
for not using his real name in the newsgroups, huh? I did see several posts
discussing the virtues of the Audigy card, especially the reverb. Ring a
bell?
I also find that he's been using other e-mail addresses such as
mr...@hotmail.com and mr...@excite.com. So I searched for those specific
addresses. Lo and behold once again, I find a newsgroup post (different
newsgroup) on 12 March 2004, from mr...@hotmail.com where the name is listed
as Einstein. Bingo! I mean, what are the odds of two 55 year old men from
the south, who served at the same time in the Army, who recorded in Muscle
Shoals studio, and had the same dozen pieces of equipment (including a
GTX-33 with Seymour Duncan pickups run through a Johnson J-Station) *and*
choosing to write about all of that information on the Internet, who
suddenly start posting as "Einstein" in Feb/March of this year?
But what about the 100% reliable proof? Well, as I was looking around the
newsgroups for Mike Rieves, I found a hit here in alt.music.home-studio.
Yep, Einstein signed one of his first posts here as "Mike Rieves." See
http://tinyurl.com/3b4pm or use the advanced search in
http://groups.google.com and search for Mike Rieves and set the newsgroup
filter to *home-studio.
I have no qualms about posting his real name for all to see. After all, he
saw fit to do it himself. I just wished I had noticed that earlier and saved
some time. So, Porky, you have no reason now to avoid proving some of your
credentials. And if you do turn out to be some sort of expert, I will
apologize for doubting you.
BTW, last night I tried to give you an out. I offered to call you Mike
instead of Porky. You could have 'fessed up right there. C'mon, you *had* to
know I was up to something. After all, I'm the one who sniffed out the
Einstein-Hawkins-Porky connection.
I'm sure you will question my motivations for doing all this. Well, it's
rather simple. You really pissed me off. When you came in as Porky in a
misguided attempt to defend yourself, you were just trying to fool people.
That was sad and pathetic. But when I called you on it, you flat-out lied to
me. I'm sure you'll say that I am a liar based on one post. Well, in that
one post I wrote a bunch of bullshit credentials, then, in the SAME post, I
pointed out that none of it was true. I was simply establishing how easy it
is for anybody to post a bunch of alleged credentials. You've also insulted
me numerous times and irritated me quite a bit.. But most of all, I just
have no patience for liars. You seem to lie a lot.

Now I see, porky told enough of the truth about the gear he owns,
and he'd already listed it as Mike Rieves on his soundclick page.
Google (and maybe other search engines) is your cross-reference.
Don't worry, porky will put you down for taking so long to discover

Porky is an absolute amateur when it comes to hiding on the

Maybe you can do something with this. I've already googled a bunch
of ways on this a few times last year, and it's all water under the
bridge anyway by now, but can you tell anything about
bumper...@aol.com ? There were over 1500 posts, all to one group,
and a web reference or two that were just copies of Usenet posts. But
it was horrifying to see, I had been active in that group for less
than a year, then I saw this goon seriously damage the group. I'd
never seen a group being destroyed before. He was some sort of
"professional troll."
Hmm, I just checked, it looks like he has some activity on
a.m.van-halen, but it's nothing like before.

Great job indeed, Jim. And we don't just know his real name now, but also
why he couldn't give it, with all the professional Nashville experience
under his hat. Oh, and ofcourse, he knew some people that Harvey also
knows, or eh, maybe saw them once, or eh, saw their names? :-)

As a bit of a newbie with a project studio I applaud your tenacity in
dealing with Porky :)
I have recently started using this group and use it to get info before
I make a purchase or decide on a direction. Porky is definitely quite
articulate (or good with a google search) and along with several
personalities, can make quite a convincing case against the uninformed
(although, when he started getting into the adiabatic sound absorbtion
qualities of lead I became more skeptical ;) ).
Anyway, these groups are an important source of information for people
like myself and the less tainted with bullshit the better. Although I
must say, I do enjoy killing a slow afternoon at work reading his
technical explanations and defending his indefensible positions. I
appreciate that you and others make the effort to combat statements
which inaccurate.
Keep up the good work and I will wait with bated breath for the next
Porky installment :)
One thing for Jim, I know a lot more about it than you do by any standard of
measurement anyone choose to use.

I have had more than one song published, recorded and released for sale. I
wasn't implying anything.

I neither said nor implied that either, and it seemed that way to you, it's
because you're reading into my words something that simply isn't there.
>I get that based on all the name dropping he did in response to

I considered it quite possible that Harvey might know one or more of the
folks I mentioned. It was an honest inquiry, not name dropping. If I was
name dropping it wouldn't be names that are "obscure" (your word concerning
the neames I mentioned). So, how would that be name dropping?

As a matter of fact, there are a couple of references to articles I've
written under that name which have nothing to do with music. That is one of
several names I use on usenet, nothing more, nothing less. I have no need to
prove myself to Jim Carr, nor have I the need to prove anything to anyone
else. As I said, I haven't done a live gig in alomst twenty years, so why
would I have anything posted about a band or a place to hire me. Since you
still don't know my real name, you don't have a clue.

The GTX 33 was made by Kaman which was a respected name in good quality,
reasonably priced musical equipment. It is NOT a knock off of a Strat, it
looks nothing like a Strat, and it has a humbucker in the bridge position.
the Strat has three single coil pickups.
>And how
> many people who did own such a guitar would swap out the pickups with

I know of five or six around here, the GTX 33 has a great full 2 octave neck
and it plays really well, but the pickups are cheesy, so practically
everyone who owns one replaces the pickups, and since Seymour makes arguably
the best replacement pickups in the business, most folks replace them with
Seymour Duncans.

If that were my real name, if you go back far enough, you might find the
name M. Rieves or M. Reeves as writer or co-writer on some songs released
back in the '70's and '80's. Jim Reeves was one of my favorite artists when

Again, I freely admit to using the name "Mike Rieves" in usenet, but it

I figured you would catch the slip where I signed the post. Happens I had

I haven't posted any bullshit credentials, and the reason you've gone to all
this trouble is that I disagreed with you, which you apparently can't stand
(an inferiority complex maybe?). And you're such an asshole you chose to go
after me personally, which is the reason I chose to change my name, once
telling you which didn't make you ease off, and then trying to get a fresh
start without assholes like you and George constantly hounding me. I came
here for constructive purposes. I have no need to prove anything to anyone,
but you wouldn't let it go and you chose to blow everything I've said
totally out of proportion and apparently no one here is reading everything,
because if they were, they sure as hell weren't trying to understand what I
was saying. Everybody is wanting to argue units when I'm talking systems.

Oh, I'm sure that Mike Rieves is just an alias along with Einstein,
Hawkins-blah-blah-blah, and Porky. In fact, when using the alias Einstein,
you signed your name Mike Rieves. That's the old "double-alias" trick,
right? You're pretty damned clever!
BTW, you should not use that Mike Rieves alias anymore. Turns out there's a
real person using that name (and same e-mail address) who served in the Army
at the same time you did. See
http://www.zianet.com/dpiland/ordnance/UnitedStates.htm. My guess is he
would be pretty pissed if he knew you were tarnishing his good name.
Actually, I had just come from another group where I use the name Mike
Rieves, and I inadvertantly signed it here.

Actually it was his dying wish that I use his name as an alias to keep his
memory alive online. Actually, you should be pretty pissed at yourself for
tarnishing your own good name with your trivial bullshit.

Looking at Lyrics/Story some are written by MRiev, others by Ed Rieves.
Since we know your name is Michael E. Reeves, Ed comes as no surprise.
Interestingly, you even lie on SoundClick. Maybe lie is too harsh a word. I
guess you just pretend a lot. You've told us you haven't played live since
the 70s, but here you write, "Do you play live? Not often, but we love
performing for a crowd when we get the chance." You also wrote, "Our dads
were all in a heavy metal band back in the '70's, and we just kind of picked
up where they left off, Strats, Les Pauls, Marshall Stacks and all."
Maybe you're not Mike Rieves. Maybe you're an alien.
> If that were the real me.....
Are you really going to tell us you are not Michael E. Rieves of Columbia,
TN? Okay, I trust you. After all, you've given me no reason to doubt you.
You've been nothing but honest here.
> Again, I freely admit to using the name "Mike Rieves" in usenet,
You claim that you picked the name for music purposes, then you use it in
the Mustang newsgroup, then come to a *music* newsgroup and choose a
different alias. You are one wiley character! You've also used that name on
other websites that have nothing to do with music. Man, you are a tough one
to track!
> isn't my real name, nor my real personna except for some intentional

Oh, I'm sure of that. Just curious, though. Why would you sign your old Army
reunion site with an alias and use your full name of Michael E. Rieves?
Pathalogical - Of, relating to, or manifesting behavior that is habitual,
maladaptive, and compulsive as in pathological liar.
BTW, I *love* your comment on SoundClick: "Let me lay it on ya, I gotta spit
it out, I'm just a lame-ass white boy, but my music's 'bout it 'bout it!"
> ROTFLOL! Jim, you should hang out a shingle. BTW, I've got

When I was a bill collector, I once spent my downtime at work tracking down
a guy who got released from the Army two months early and still owed us
about $250. It took about two months. I was calling his ex-neighbors,
ex-girlfriends, you name it. I finally figured I had him, but he would deny
it was him when I called. So I waited a few days, then called again. When he
answered the phone, I said, "Bob! You asshole! What's up?" We went back and
forth for a minute as he tried to figure out who I was. Then I told him. He
laughed his ass off that I finally got him.
Never did get the money, though.
> Actually it was his dying wish that I use his name as an alias to keep his

LOL!. That one made me laugh out loud and you didn't even have to use a
smiley face. See, we can get along!

If you must know, I worked for a company that was basically usury made legal
(Landmark Financial Services). I collected on the loans. Though I didn't
like the idea of making the loans, if you took the loan, you had better pay
it back.
What I did not enjoy was dealing with people truly down on their luck. Most
of the time you couldn't get anything out of them anyway. You'd be amazed,
though, at just how many people supposedly "unable to avoid" those medical
bills actually could have avoided them. It's interesting the things people
choose to spend their money on in lieu of health insurance. Then you had the
folks who clearly had strings of bad luck. It's hard enough dealing with one
financial tragedy, but I saw folks get hit with several at once. Long and
short of it is that there's a lot of gray in the area of medical
collections. Most of it's written off anyway.
But if it means you'll never respond to me again, my *favorite* collection
was for widows who couldn't pay their funeral bills.
Who in hell is going to bother to listen to Heavy Metal from an
unestablished band in their fifties?
It could be my son's band. Have you ever met a famous musician in a
non-public place and noticed that they were totally different from their
public personna? It's all part of the act.
> Maybe you're not Mike Rieves. Maybe you're an alien.
Not the first time I've heard that. Or maybe I was abducted by aliens and
they performed weird experiments on me.

You can be sure that if you posted my real ID here, within in a few days
someone would pay you a personal visit and you would never, ever make a
similar mistake again. That is not a threat, it wouldn't be me paying the
visit, and those who did would not threaten violence, they would simply show
you ID, tell you that you made a serious mistake, grimly advise you not to
do it again, and you would be more than happy to comply. Or maybe I'm making
all this up. Remember, I did say something about being in the witless
protection program. Who knows, maybe the "l" is a typo. :-)

I use it everywhere that I'm not worried about being attacked by people like
you, which is just about everywhere else. I didn't claim that I used the

That is not a reunion site, the real Michael Rieves was there too, as I
said, I'm keeping his name alive on the Web.

Wait, use your sleuthing powers again and reread the part where I said if
you kept harassing me I would jerk you around until your brains rattled in
your skulls. Payback doesn't come under "pathological" "Psychological games"
might come a bit closer.

That was my other son, the illegitimate one. I hear he's famous now, even
has a movie out, something about "ate my" something. I haven't seen him
since I ran off and left his mom
Poor folks are often forced into making loans to pay medical bills because
their kids will suffer or die if the surgery isn't performed and the surgery
won't be performed if a down payment is not made. Yes, it happens right here
in America and it has been happening for years. If you had no insurance
because you blew your money on luxuries like food and rent, and a doctor
told you your son needed a 10,000 dollar operation, but they couldn't do it
unless you paid a thousand bucks down, wouldn't you do pretty much whatever
you had to to come up with the money. including taking out a loan you knew
you couldn't pay?

Some of it is written off at the expense of bad credit reports keeping
people from getting better jobs that would allow them to pay those
bills..... Checking credit is before hiring is routine these days in
virtually all but the dead end jobs.
> But if it means you'll never respond to me again, my *favorite* collection

If you don't want me to respond, simply quit posting to or about me, ignore
me!
(I doubt you'll do that, you're having too much fun with this. The group is
licking your butt with the compliments about your sleuthing ability and
you're eating it all up and trying to figure out how to get more of it!)

Go after everyone else.
We've been there before, it wasn't the whole story then and it still
isn't. Jim can be pretty vindictive when you piss him off, as I freely admit
to having done at that time. I'm sure he'd have even more fun with you, you
being a "famous inventer" and all.
The stuff on Soundclick is just hype and it depends on which of my bands
you look at as to what credentials and experience I "claim", it's all about
aiming at a particular market.
Why don't you tell everybody about the letter I received from Gary
Solokich? Could it be because you have no idea what was in it? How could
that be "Gary"?
Whether it is is/was the whole story is irrelevant to me. It gave me what
I need to take the next step.

You're the wise-ass. You tell me.
And what step would that be "Dr Sokolich"?

If I had to guess why you don't know what was in the letter, I'd guess
that you're an imposter pretending to be Dr Gary Sokolich. In fact, I've
never actually seen you admit that you were Dr Sokolich, even when asked
point blank, though you often intimate that you are. The real Dr Sokolich is
now aware that you are using his identity (at least by inference) on Usenet,
and if you are not him, you might want to make yourself aware of the
penalties for such behavior. Happy New year!
You might want to make yourself aware of the penalties for your behavior.
You both might want to take your bloody dispute elsewhere.

You made that same accusation in Ocober of 2004. Since you apparently

I started insulting you because you are one of the most
technically-inept jackasses posting in the audio newsgroups.
Initially, I judged you solely on the basis of the technical
accuracy/content your posts.
What is painfully obvious is your inability to comprehend the obvious,
recognize the absurd and engage in a sensible exchange. Whether your
future contributions to this group are useful in any sense remains to be
seen. Your contribution to the Doppler discussions of last year was most
certainly useless in every sense,
For heaven's sake guys give it a rest. Porky, like the rest of us is not
perfect. A bit loud mouthed and hot headed at times but hell that
describes the quieter ones in this group. He made mistakes and like a man
he admitted them and ate humble pie. For the most part he genuinely tries
to be helpful.
And Porky, you know by now its best to ignore threads like this. By all
means make one reply but then just let it go. It's not worth it.

It was easier to ignore Ghost. It was the same old crap with him. You know,

have) argue with you for hours on end! :-)
Ghost is truly mentally ill. And he's so vain he probably thinks this post
is about him.
If your assessment were correct, porky the swine would have ignored me
months ago. The reason he didn't is not because he is imperfect (like
everyone else on this planet) but because he is an ignorant, self-absorbed
jackass and an egotistical asshole. I recognized this immediately from his
mindless comments regarding the Doppler distortion issue and I decided
to take full advantage of his adolescent mentality. Because of the
uncontrolled hatred that the swine developed toward me, I was extremely
successful in prolonging most if not all of the threads associated with the
Doppler distortion issue. I am particularly greatful to the Beavis &
Buttead duo of the audio groups for their invaluable assistance in
prolonging the thread entitled "Bob Cain Goes Down and Out in Defeat" from

You are a bit late, but pigs are known for being slow. Nonetheless, I
thank you for demonstrating that Pavlov would have done just as well by
using a pig instead of a dog. I also thank you for assisting me in
increasing the longevity of the Doppler threads from a few days to several
months. I am particularly greatful to you for your assistance in grossly
prolonging the thread entitled "Bob Cain Goes Down and Out in Defeat."
Not surprisingly, and for good reason, it would appear that you and the
swine are the only two members of the Beavis & Butthead Mutual Admiration
Society of the Audio Groups. And, by the way, I thank both you and the
swine for your participation in increasing the longevity of the Doppler
distortion threads from days to months. I am particularly greatful for
your mindless contributions to the thread entitled "Bob Cain Goes Down and

So much for your purported objectivity. It's certainly clear whose side
you are on...as if I really care.
A true left-handed compliment (or is it a right-handed insult? :-)).
Thanks, (I think), Jim. I agree about the Ghost, and hopefully, now that
everyone is ignoring him, he'll get the hint and go back to haunting the
physics groups. If not, I know a good exorcist....

Ahh, the younger folks here may think that was original, but us antiques

I *think* she sold the truth to somebody in a charity auction. Also included
were a martini and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Nevertheless, nobody
else knows.
Who did Carly write it about? I always thought it was James Taylor. I'm

We've had pig Latin, now we have pig math. Next we will have Beavis &

Hardly, but laugh it up and roll around all you want, moron, because you
are only fooling yourself. According to Webster's Dictionary one
definition of life (near the top of the list) is "spiritual existence
transcending physical death." So, ghosts live on after physical death
whereas pigs rightfully go the sausage factory.
BTW, do we now have a trio? If so, the Beavis & Butthead duo will need a
new name. The Three Stooges seems to fit.
