Restaurants heading - by Doral Chenoweth
When Chapin's, the Crosswoods restaurant, opened almost two years
ago, the intent was to honor the memory of folk singer Harry Chapin,
who died in 1980, and his causes to eliminate world hunger.
Apparently, something was lacking on the follow-through, because
as of April 5 the restaurant will have a new name, Troubadours.
Differences with the nameholders involved unanticipated financial
and operational limitations, according to Ralph Denisco, restaurant
president and chief operations officer. He said those differences
will be made up under the new name.
The original deal between the restaurant and the Chapin family
called for 10 percent of profits to go to the Chapin Foundation.
In the first year of the restaurant's operation, it grossed $2.8
million. The new release announcing the name change also said the
restaurant paid $25,000 to the Chapin familiy during the first year
of business. How that relates to the profit aspect is not known.
Denisco said the agreement with the Chapin family required that
93 percent of contributions go "to causes outside of the Ohio area".
The Chapin's family foundations supports causes fighting world
hunger. Harry Chapin doled out more than 50 percent of his
reyalties and concert revenue to combat world hunger.
Denisco said the restaurant decided to change its name after
discussions with the Chapin family. He added that the restaurant
will continue to donate a percentage of profits to local charitable
causes but with a wider target than previously under the single name
of Harry Chapin. "Harry Chapin will endure as our inspiration for
true citizenship," he said.
As Chapin's, the entire decor centers on extensive graphic
memorials to the singer, even in the restrooms. Whether that will
be removed has yet to be decided.
As far as food operation is concerned, there will be no changes.
One of the city's leading chefs, Roland Fellows, opened the
restaurant and will continue. Chapin's appears on The Dispatch's
list of Top 10 casual establishments.
