LMAO! Very funny and poignant too. With a lot of subliminal truth in between the lines of that remark. . I am intrigued by that answer. A funny but perhaps deep answer. A comment I have said before in this forum,  it reminds me of watching comedian Pete Barbutti years ago in a skit where he hits an F# only over and over  and saying looking at the camera, "it's Jazz!"
How many people  think they can play a Hammond just by playing F blues? Or only blues in F or C or G.

Though there is some undeniable great playing by Smith, there are some Smith recordings I absolutely don't like. I remember Lord Valve posting here about one that I laughed because I threw it out minutes after hearing some time ago probably the only Hammond recording I tossed. The only time I thought about it again was during this thread.

One other thing that gets me a bit disappointed with Jimmy Smith as opposed to players like Don Patterson and Richard Groove Holmes is that it seems more frequently that you have to listen to other instruments most of the time, taking the lead melody, or the main solo, with Jimmy coming in when he wants otherwise comping for many minutes at a time. I wanted to hear more of Jimmy in 'The Serman", though the other instruments solos are excellant.  Most of the recordings I have of Patterson and Holmes seems to be more frequently THEY take the lead melody, the main solo. I personally like to hear jazz-guitar, though naturally I enjoy the horns. This recording style (laying back and letting other instruments dominate the tune mostly)  is OK for general jazz listeners but for Hammond fans/fanatics, one wants to hear more/mostly Hammond like a lot of the Patterson/Groove recordings. (who do this also but not as much)

The only organ recordings of any instrument that I threw out in my life were
Jimmy Smith LP's. Sorry folks---just find no substance in them.

I dont find Mr Smiths recordings that objectionabale!! In fact he and
Mr McGriff are the reason I too up the Hammond in the first place.
There are some points in Jimmys current live playing where its just
become cliche after cliche but he started the whole modern organ style
so I tend to cut him alot of slack co he is the daddy of us all
really.

My fave story is have I hired Jimmy my C3 in 1994 - he has sounchecked
and I presumed that he had left the buliding. as no one was around but
bar staff opening up - I decided to jump on the bench and kick out
some riffs etc etc.

I had been playing for about 4 minutes when from behind the stage I
heard:

"Greg - You lick-nicking mutha f*cka!"

Jimmy was still in the dressing room and came out giving me one of
those mock stares that soundmen a round the world have suffered, Jimmy
Smith is without doubt the grumpiest organist Ive ever met...but at
these gigs in 1994 he was free of any serious sunstance situations and
played better than Ive ever seen him - it was fantastic...have not
seen him play like it since..which is a big shame.

My current fave player who loves the organ tradition but always
surprises is Dr Lonnie Smith - a brilliant player and very very sweet
man too - yup he has played my C3 also

Im a lucky man...thats for sure
