1970's solid-state replacement for the Porta-B. It and the Leslie
760 were designed to 'go together'.
>How does it sound...is it worth having?
I have this 'combo' and like it for certain small gigs .. it sounds
-not- like a B tho, if that's what you're asking. The Leslie 760
control is built-in to the X5, which is handy. Worth having?? hmmm..
depends on your needs and taste, I guess. Try it .. if you like it,
it's worth having for you. The 760 is a pretty powerful Leslie.
It's all solid-state of course. The combo would probably sound great
for euro-techno type music. The entire 760 service manual is available
for free on the web. I have most of the X5 manual.
The cheesy plastic-housing handles on the 760 will probably be broken.
Replace them with metal flite handles and yer set. The small casters
might need replacing as well.
>There is one in my neighbourhood....thought I might have a look
Have a listen .. don't pay too much tho. No idea what European
going-rate prices are for these. ???
Yer welcome. :-)

Hammond-Leslie FAQ: http://theatreorgans.com/hammond/faq/hammond-faq_toc.html
It's semi portable with a 2 four octave keyboard, the circuitry
in 70s analogue synth giving a warm weighty very convincing Hammond organ
sound. Although much more portable that b3/c3s it still needs two people to
carry it - it also has a separate pedal board / preamp and folding a metal
stand. I was going to swap it for a newer lighter XB2 that I borrowed for a
while, though I changed my mind because the XB2 sounded a bit weedy relative
to the X5.
If you want to hear an X5, I recently recorded with it in my band Space
Hopper. You can hear MP3s at

it would sound even better if I had a Leslie with horn.
In short, if you can get one cheap with a good Leslie and you have a car and
people who don't mind carrying it into gigs, than you've got a great
sounding Hammond without the fuss of tonewheels.

P.S. remember I'm using an Leslie 820 without a horn (ooo matron) so organ
doesn't sound as good as it could do.
Cheers Ian
Fuss of tonewheels?? Oh, that's right, they do have to be oiled ...
once a -year-. Bother! ;-) LOL

Great Band!!
They were signed to the same label "Imaginary" ....as one of the bands I
play with "The Beat Poets"
All the bands were dropped when the label was bought over and closed
down....
