Mark Knopfler sometimes plugs the higher strings with the thumb, and the
bass strings with the fingers.

The angle of attack from the different fingering positions can give you
a variety of useful tones. You can snap the string against the frets,
do pinch harmonics, free strokes, rest strokes, etc. Experiment with
it and you'll find a lot of options.

I don't know about Mark Knopfler, but for me it was just the most natural
way of playing. I used a pick for a long time, then gave it up as I could
do more just using fingerpicking.
