HE'S A MACHO MACHO MAN...
Fred Durst do your worst
FRED DURST of Limp Bizkit has hit back at Marilyn Manson's internet attack
on his band and fans as "illiterate apes that beat your ass in high school
for being a 'fag' now sell you tuneless testosterone anthems of misogyny
and pretend to be outsiders..."
Manson posted the rant on his site earlier this year.
"I understand that Marilyn Manson is very unhappy that his career has gone
in a shambles and he's alienated his fans," Fred told NME, "so if he has
to say things like that because he's very mad at himself, I would forgive
him. And Trent Reznor's in the fucking same boat. Trent Reznor is
obviously unhappy with how he's alienated the world, how long he took to
make a record, and how he thought he was immortal. We're just here doing
what we do and we have nothing to say about anybody. I wish them both luck
and I feel sorry that they're so jealous and mad at themselves that they
have to talk shit."
What about Manson's suggestion that you are a bully posing as a victim?
"That's how stupid he must be if he thinks that. But hey, I definitely
wasn't one of the bullies at school. I was a victim. And I'm not a bully
at all right now, what can I say? I'm friends with the people in his band
so I don't know why he's talking shit."
An e mail purporting to come from Courtney Love has also been circulating
on news groups and fan sites attacking the new sexist attitude in rock
that Limp Bizkit seem to represent. Many of Fred's lyrics express
extremely negative attitudes towards women, especially an unfaithful
ex-girlfriend who he describes as "this sweet, innocent girl I was in love
with who turned out to be this swinging-ass bisexual, fucking my dirtiest
friends."
The most notorious of these is the vitriolic 'Stuck' from Bizkit's first
album. Does Fred now think he went too far?
"Well I use the words 'bitch' and 'whore' in the song, directed towards
one person who was both of those things, if you ask me. To the naked eye,
people that didn't want to take the time and listen to the words, might
think otherwise. But I definitely respect women. I have a better attitude
than almost anyone I know towards women."
Fred's mother, a Lutheran church administrator, would agree.
"Well I'm a mother so I don't care for the cursing, but Fred expresses
himself. He's 29 years old, you know? Fred does what he does creatively
and I approve of everything Fred does. You know what it is? Fred loves
being him and I love being Fred's Mom!" she said when we caught up with
her backstage at a Limp Bizkit gig in Orlando, Florida recently.
Has Fred's religious faith been important to his success?
"I've raised Fred with very strong faith in our family, and Fred is very
very serious about his faith. He prays every day and he thanks God for
what He's given him. That's the way I raised him and that's what makes me
the most proud. I don't think God gives you things because you pray, I
think God takes care of you because you pray..." You can read the full
interview with Fred Durst in NME, out across the UK from tomorrow.

LOL. I don't care much for his music, but MM cracks me up with some of the
things he says :)

Manson may be a total asswipe, but he's not stupid, and every now and
then I have to agree with him...and this is one of those times. Music
for frat-boy date rapists, anyone?

Because Limp Bizket is yet another of those bands that Trent doesn't
like (although MHO is that LB deserves the Wrath of Reznor a lot more
than, say, Bush--I can stand to listen to Bush, and Gavin's not a total
dickhead), and he went on the record with his NSHO in Rolling
Stone--IIRC, the quote was "Fred Durst can surf a piece of plywood up my
ass." (There are a lot of people who'd pay good money to see that one,
methinks... ;-) I've wondered if he felt compelled to take a shot at
Fred because he got sick of seeing the latter's grinning mug on MTV
during Woodstock '99 going on about how he wanted to be to this
Woodstock what Trent was to '94...I could make a lot of *really* snarky
comments about that one, but I'll spare you. Suffice to say that Monica
Lewinsky is a household name, too, but being infamous isn't enough...

Can you say "madonna/whore complex"? Thought you could...(I suppose it
would have been OK if she'd been screwing other women & inviting him in
on the action, eh?)

BTW, wasn't it mainly Korn--or, to be more specific, their
"handlers"--who bore the brunt of Courtney's wrath? There was a
discussion some time ago on the Metal Sludge boards about this, and
apparently at least one of Korn's managers has a nasty reputation for
being a sexually coercive cokehead asshole, and the other one isn't much
better.

Delusional is more like it. Hell, Kid Rock may talk trash, but I get
the gut feeling that he actually *likes* women, in spite of all his
bravado and hanging out w/porn stars. (He also seems somewhat wittier
and more self-aware, and my feeling is that being a custodial parent has
a lot to do with that--few things wise your ass up faster than raising a
kid, and I laughed myself sick reading the article where he talked about
being a neatnik at home and how he'd just finished cleaning the whole
house top to bottom...) Anyway, you have to like a guy who has
standards for groupies (no married women and no underage girls, and he
and his bodyguard both *WILL* card you)... :-) He may be a horndog, but
he's not stupid! (This doesn't mean I'm going to buy his album, but I do
listen when he comes on the radio, as opposed to lunging for the dial
when Korn Bizket comes on.)

Plus she's his mom, and he's probably setting her up in style, so she'll
forgive damn near anything he does.

Kid Rock's been on Politically Incorrect, and while not the brightest
bulb in the box, he's definitely a witty, self-aware guy and he does
*like* women and seems to respect them as well. he spoke very highly
of his kid's mom when he was on PI. i think he's basically a nice guy
under all that Bawitaba (heh heh).

Well...remember how, after Woodstock '94, NIN was one of the bands
*everyone* (including Letterman, who seemed to be slightly obsessed for
a while) remembered as putting on a really kickass show--it wouldn't be
all that wrong to say that was what really helped break them to a mass
audience. I think Fred had notions of making that kind of splash and
getting that kind of artistic recognition at Woodstock '99, but what did
he produce for his trouble? Riots, burnings, and rapes. Way to go,
dude...

The big difference, of course, is that--like him or not--Trent has the
respect and admiration of his musical peers and forebears (Bowie chief
among them, but also Todd Rundgren, Lou Reed, and God only knows who
else). Even if NIN hangs it up after the next album, he'll still keep
on making music, and I can easily see him having a very creative
Enoesque career scoring films, producing other acts, and generally
settling in to becoming an artist for the long haul. Fred, on the other
hand, isn't that bright, isn't especially talented, only gets respect
from those lower on the food chain than he is, and is a misogynistic
jackass to boot. He may be an Interscope VP (and what do you bet they
only threw him that to shut him up and/or give him enough rope to hang
himself?), but that doesn't guarantee either financial or artistic
success over the long haul, and I daresay we'll be seeing him on "Where
Are They Now?" within 5-10 years. (Besides, you have to give Trent
credit--at least he's never sunk so low as to screw Carmen Electra...)

If either of those guys has a real reason to be pissed at women, it
would be Kid--his son's mother had another child while she was with him,
and said it was his, but that turned out not to be the case...I don't
think that was the entire reason they split up, but it probably didn't
help much. That sure as hell beats out screwing around
non-reproductively in my book; but Kid still has a much better attitude
towards women, and seems to be willing to admit his own failings. (He
also seems to have a policy about not talking trash about his ex,
pointing out that while they don't necessarily get along, she's still
his son's mother and Junior still loves her, which he should; which
suggests a certain amount of decency, perspective and good old common
sense to me. But, that's MHO...)

i don't think it's jealousy or that particular type of anger. if they're
pissed it's because of the garbage LB's putting out that's flooding the
music scene at this particular time. of course, the music industry shits
on it's newborns shortly after giving birth. if they can survive that
they might have a chance. but not likely. if anything, durst may
survive, as a solo. but only by copying and exploiting whatever sound is
popular. you need talent to last, and that's something durst
lacks. nookie? i don't think so.
