Thanks to CJB (much thanks!), I recently received a cassette tape of some
old Happy Goodmans albums. I have watched the Happy Goodmans on the old
Gospel Singing Jubilee and have seen them in person. I have also seen the
compilation tapes of their appearances on the Gospel Singing Jubilee. One
of the songs that I wanted to hear again is called "The Point Of No Return."
Now I am pretty familiar with the individual voices of the Goodmans. When
they sang quartet style, Rusty usually took the Bass, Sam sang a second
tenor under Vestal's part and Howard took the lead. I know, too, that each
of the men sang solos and I could give examples, but I won't. My question
is this - on Point of No Return and on another song, a version of Peace in
the Valley, it is clearly not one of those men singing - it's not Sam, Rusty
or Howard. I can compare them on the tapes to other songs I know they sang
lead on. I know there was another brother that sang with them, and they
also had talented pianists and guitarists. Was it one of them? Can someone
identify who sang lead on these two songs? I am pretty sure it is the same
person on both. I just wondered who it is and why they would be singing
when they had such a good quartet anyway. But if it is another family
member or one of their regular musicians, then it makes a little sense.
BTW, these recordings are long before Johnny Cook sang with them. I know
it's not him because his voice is a high tenor comparable to Vestal's!

Thanks again to CJB for these outstanding recordings!

There was a Goodman brother who died a few years back, can't remember
his name. Anyway, the picture of him that was used in the Singing News
article showed him behind a mic. Maybe, he did the singing.

The Goodmans weren't always just family. You already mentioned Johnny Cook
singing tenor with them at one time, but Michael English sang lead with them
when he was very young. Perhaps it's him on lead for those songs. I don't
know. I'm just guessing.

I'm not terribly "up" on my vintage Goodmans, but I do have the album
jackets from those albums. The only person named other than those you've
mentioned is Ricky, so, could it have been him?

Their younger brother to Howard, Sam, and Rusty was Bobby Goodman who
played bass with the group and sang occasionally. I know he sang a song
called "I Want to Stroll over Heaven With You", and a couple other s
also!

Bobby Goodman did sing occasionally and played guitar. I believe he was also
a songwriter for the Goodmans, also.
Ricky Goodman is the son of Howard and Vestal. He played the drums for
the Goodmans and now he is the man who keeps their show running. His son
Travis Goodman married Tara Dodge--daughter of Amos and Sue Dodges and they
are expecting their first child next month. This will be the first
grandchild for Rick and Diane Goodman. I am not sure if Howard and vestal
have other great-grandchildren. They do have a daughter named Vicki who is
not involved in the music business with them.

Although Vicki DID sing with the Goodmans during the early 70s when
Vestal was suffering with an illness. Vicki sounded much like Vestal,
and wore chiffon dresses.

I would say then, that this is the same person singing on these recordings.
These are early recordings of the Goodmans. (1960's/1970's) I am 100%
certain it is not Mike English. I knew from their Gospel Singing Jubilee
appearances that they had other musicians. It makes sense to give another
family member a solo on their lps.

By the way, has anyone actually heard "The Point of No Return?" The song
only has one verse and a chorus as presented by the group. I was always
struck by the gist of the song that lost sinners travel too far on the road
of sin and pass the point of no return to God. While I believe that God's
love and invitation is there for all while they are alive, lost souls who
die in their sin without ever confessing Christ as their Saviour do,
technically, pass a point of no return. I am wondering if there may be a
second verse to the song that may include an invitation. If not, I am
working on one! :-)

Also, I could include this recording "Bigger & Better" as one of the first
SG lps that I ever purchased. It was an 8 track tape and my mom and I wore
it out playing it almost every time we got in the car - an Oldsmobile Delta
88! Among the songs were "Not in a Million Years," "I'm Building A Bridge,"
Oh, How Precious Is The Promise," "When It All Starts Happening," "While
Eternal Ages Roll," and Rusty singing "Poor Rich Man!" It was and still is
an awesome recording.

Bobby Goodman sang that song "Point of No Return." He was one of the
brothers. He played bass guitar and sang occasionally until 1972,
when he left.
He also was the singer on "I Want to Stroll Over Heaven." After the
Goodmans, he went with the Hemphills (LaBreeska was the daughter of
one of the Goodman sisters...the name always escapes me...Gussie I
think was her name). Bobby also did a couple of solo albums as well.

"Point of No Return" is from the mid-60s album "Bigger n Better."

You're right. It wasn't Ricky, it was Bobby. Memory is failing
