Man accused of blackmailing pleads innocent
A Johnson City man accused of trying to blackmail a gospel singer by
threatening to reveal the singer is gay pleaded innocent Monday.
Walbert Keith Farmer, 39, appeared in U.S. District Court to be
formally arraigned on an extortion charge lodged against him by a
federal grand jury in December.
U.S. Magistrate Bruce Guyton set a March 4 trial date in the case.
Farmer is accused of threatening to reveal that Kirk Talley, a Dove
Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, is gay
unless Talley man paid him nearly $15,000.
FBI Agent Paul C. Hughes wrote in an affidavit that Talley said he was
gay and used the Internet to meet men. Talley told Hughes he had sent
nude photographs of himself to several men, the affidavit states.
Farmer initially contacted Talley, of Kodak, in late November, posing
as a private investigator and claiming he was investigating a case
involving one of those nude photographs, the affidavit states.
Farmer later told Talley he could "get this matter settled" by paying
him $14,800, the affidavit alleged. Talley reported the alleged
extortion attempt to the FBI. Farmer was arrested Dec. 9 after he met
Talley at a Knoxville restaurant to collect the requested bribe, the
affidavit alleges.
According to Talley's official Web site, the singer's concerts have
either been canceled or are "in the process of" being canceled. There
is no explanation on the site for the cancellations.
Does anyone know the office where Paul C. Hughes works? I wonder if the free
of information act could retrieve a copy of that affidavit?
The affidavit, was given to the FBI. In a conversation with the local office
in Memphis. I was told that until the case is closed, the record is not
available to the general public. Press yes, to read, not get a copy of. But
just to the general public
This may be true to some of us, but many have doubted that KT actually
said he was gay himself. This not only answers that question, but it
also names the FBI agent. Now if anyone wants to get a copy of his
affidavit, they know who signed it under oath.
Further, now that the FBI agent's name is public, those of us who
doubt the accuracy of the report will fully expect KT to file a
"defamation suit" against the FBI agent and the reporter for making
false claims that cost him a lot of money.
Do you have any media contacts that might qualify as "press" in Nashville?
