Jim Hamill sang in the Songfellows in Memphis, Tn.(Cecil Blackwood`s
part-time quartet,I believe 1952), and in his first full-time
professional gospel quartet in 1953.

What was the name of Jim Hamill`s first full-time professional quartet?

Paul, I have Davids book also, yes it states Jim Hamill got his start
in gospel music with the Songfellows in 1952. I think the Songfellows
were a part-time group. Here`s a hint-Jim sang in this group after the
Songfellows and before the Weatherfords. From what I read the
Songfellows were a church quartet.

Was he with Blue Ridge before or after the Weatherfords?

Well...since he already mentioned the Songfellows in the question, I didn't
think that would be the answer. Didn't you read the question? HAHA

If it's not the Weatherfords, that would leave the Rebels and the Blue Ridge
Quartet.

He was also with the Oak Ridge Boys and the Senators, but those were later
than 1953.

It was between the Songfellows and the Weatherfords. He sang in the
Songfellows in1952 and I believe te Weatherfords late 1953 or early
1954 when the Weatherfords began to sng at The Cathedral of Tomorrow.

Yes I did. I thought it was a trick question.
When is a quartet not a quartet? When it is a part-time quartet?
confusing.

http://www.sgma.org/inductee_bios/jim_hamill.htm States that
Jim joined the Weatherfords in the early 1950s. And then came times
with the Blue Ridge Quartet, the Rebels, the Oak Ridge Quartet, the
Rebels again, and finally, for almost 28 years he sang the lead for the
Kingsmen.
I also found a reference to Jim Hamill recording an LP with the
Melodymen of CA. They are not mentioned in the above bios. Neither is
the Songfellows.

Shenandoah,Ia. in 1953 which paid him fifty dollars a week.

Speaking of Hamill, not a lot of people remember , he took a short
hiatus from the Kingsmen in 1976, and joined the Senators Qt. I have
the record album called "Stand by Me", i believe it was the only record
he made with them , then went back with the Kingsmen.

We have that album (you gather many albums in 50+ years), and I do
remember seeing "Big Jim" Hamill with the Senators Qt. at a Brumley
Sing in Springdale, Ark. about 1976. That album had (correct me if I`m
wrong)-Jim Hamill Lead/M.C., Tim Shelby Tenor, Ray Shelton baritone/
mgr., Mark Trammell Bass Guitar, and I don`t remember their Bass
singers name.
I`ve wondered did he only go with them, for only a few months, only to
help them gain popularity.
